QUOTE(JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 12:26 PM) that is probably one of the most overrated theories in the game of baseball. just for kicks i went back and compared the twins "slap happy" offense of 2006 and the "long ball" offense of the chicago white sox in 2006. For a quick and dirty evaluation of consistency with a given offense i chose 5 runs as a benchmark. every game that the white sox and twins scored 5 runs or more last year i kept a tally. white sox-85 twins-77 so...the white sox scored 5 or more runs in 52.5% of their games while the twins scored 5 or more runs in 47.5% of their games and AGAIN why did the twins win the division and the white sox finish third? PITCHING and DEFENSE, the two most important aspects of the game of baseball i bet the percentage of runs scored off homers last year was very comparable to the percentage of runs scored off homers in 2005. on top of that we scored alot MORE runs last year compared to 2005. and once again, what was the difference between those two teams? To prove anything, you'd have to do a more complex statistical analysis than that. Standard deviation would be pretty interesting. Yeah, the Sox pitching sucked and that's a big reason. They also didn't have timely hitting and their runs weren't spread out very well.
-
I see no reason Pods should ever see an AB from a lefty starter this year.
-
There's a big difference between the consistency of a long-ball or slap-happy offense. A long-ball offense might put up 12 runs one day and spread out 4 hits over the next 2 games. A slap-happy offense is less likely to do that. They will also be better at driving in crucial runs one or two at a time and taking advantage of opportunities. A long-ball club is just going to try and pull everything into the stands and hope that someone managed to get on base ahead of them. The slap-happy offense also won't get mowed down by bad pitchers who just go low-and-away the entire game.

QUOTE(juddling @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 10:50 AM) I don't think Juliet is a plant for the 'Others'. At this point do the others really even NEED a plant???? They can walk into the Losties camp and take who or what they want. They seem to know all about them anyways. I thik Juliet has been left behind since she wasn't really one of them (whole-heartedly at least) and already shown some sort of mercy or sympathy towards the Losties. That is a no-no in Ben's little society. Besides...she gives another wrench to throw into the love triangle of Jack/Kate/Sawyer. She explained why she didn't unlock herself from Kate earlier last night. She didn't want to be left behind by Kate so so didn't unlock the cuffs until it was a life/death moment. I did like Juliet's line about the monster "We don't know what it is, but we know it doesn't like out fence much" i guess that explains why that kind of fence is out there. I'm not sure why the Lost crew would want to move into the abandon village...give up that beachfront property for the suburbs???? I wouldn't. Juliet has been with the 'others' for 2 or 3 years only so i guess it's possible to have another hiding place that she wouldn't know about. Oh great. The part of the show I absolutely despise. I really don't care who Kate f***s or wants to f*** or who does or doesn't want to f*** her.

You knew Mariotti was waiting to write this one...
StrangeSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Speaking of bias, did anyone get the fold-out season calender from the Trib last Sunday? On one side, they have the Cubs with a nice shot of Wrigley. It's packed and looks good. On the reverse is a shot of the Cell. Its maybe half full and the color on the picture is crap. I don't know what this has to do with Mariotti, but I just felt like pointing it out. -
Guys, he's just a troll. Don't take it seriously.
-
This jag off posted similar crap on ESPN message boards (the gathering place for intelligent debate!) all last summer. Just a troll, ignore him.

QUOTE(southsida86 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 11:03 PM) I don't think he means garbage pitchers as in junkballers, I think he means garbage pitchers as in pitchers who go in to a game in July with an ERA north of 7 and hold the Sox to 0 runs and 3-5 hits over 8 innings. The Sox have a reputation of making pitchers like Jose Lima(sans 20 win season) and Runelvys Hernandez look like the second coming of Cy Young. That's who specifically came to mind.

I just don't see it. They are trying to pull and park everything. They suck at situational hitting. That's not representative of a good approach.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 10:27 PM) Or It could just be the fact that we have some really good lefties in our division. That would negatively effect our guys stats. It could also be the fact that we have a few lefties in key positions in our lineup that are going to naturally struggle against left handed pitching. It should also be noted that we have a righty in Iguchi that is just a terrible hitter against lefties (and he wasn't any better in Japan). That means we have Pods, Erstad, Anderson (whose just a terrible hitter at this stage regardless), Thome, AJP, & Iguchi (with all of those but one in the starting lineup often against lefties) meaning that over half of our lineup can't hit left handed pitching. Luckily Pablo will step in from time to time and he mashes lefties but we clearly are not a team built to destroy left handed pitching (albeit the offense is still capable of getting enough runs against lefties, but the pitching will also have to show up). Bottom line is that the players are to blame for the squad not being able to hit lefties and more specifically I think the strong left handed pitchers in our division are to blame. Lets remember we had teams that hammered left handed pitching when Magglio and Caballo were here. By the way, I'll take the Sox offense over the Twins any day. And should we blame the Twins hitting coach for Ortiz leaving Minny and becoming Big Papi? (No we shouldn't, since Papi was hurt in Minnesota, but he also said he wasn't able to drive the ball in Minnesota because there hitting coach wasn't a fan of that). And let me tell you a little secret, the reason the Sox hit so many homers is because we have a lot of power hitters on this squad (more so than any team not named the Yankees). What about all the garbage pitchers that mowed the Sox down last year by just going low and away all game?

QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 10:14 PM) Oh, I know. It seemed like I was the only one who realized that all Borowski every crap pitcher the Sox faced in the second half of the year and so far this year was doing was throwing junk breaking stuff on the other part of the plate. If they would have went with the pitch, they would have drove a ball right into the gap for likely the game winner. The whole offense looked pretty bad today, even though they did score 7. Fixed it for ya.

QUOTE(SnB @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 06:35 PM) steve and barry's is terrible. The stuff is cheap, but all the uni stuff looks terrible, the colors are always off. Well, it depends what you're going there for. I picked up 5 blank T's for $20 and two hoodies (a plain blue one and an Illinois one) for $7 each. I've also got a few other Illinois shirts from there. I don't really buy any jerseys or anything like that, though.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 06:28 PM) Why does it always have to be about Podsednik? Personally, I don't care if he is out there or not, but I am tired of him being the whipping boy by this board for every weakness in this team's armour. There is PLENTY of blame to go around, namely 1) Dye getting noticeably older and more awkward in the field (and for all the people claiming "Thome is just not clutch," why do you suppose Dye had such incredible offensive numbers last season? ahem, Thome; 2) Iguchi, among a few others, repeatedly failing to execute in the late innings; 3) Repeated failure to hold leads, by both the starters and the bullpen; 4) Poor defense; And on and on and on. But yes, it is much easier to claim Podsednik he should be in AAA and then the White Sox would go 162-0. This board sure loves hyperbole and strawmen. No one is claiming that. We're just pointing out how much Pods sucks in every aspect of baseball.

Steve & Barry's kicks ass. "Available exclusively at Steve and Barry's University Sportswear, the premier item in the Starbury line of shoes and apparel is the Starbury One basketball shoe. The shoes retail for only $14.98, but Marbury claims that the Starbury One basketball shoes are the same as the most expensive shoes on the market. " I wouldn't doubt it. Those high-end basketball shoes are usually made pretty poorly for the price.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 05:29 PM) Erstad and Aardmsa... MacDougal looked pretty sharp as well. Thanks. I was "watching" the game via ESPN on my cellphone after the second innning so just glancing at the box score, nothing looked all that great.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 05:25 PM) That's because it's not right. The team left 8 runners on base, the players individual left 19 on base. I'm confused as to what that means? Say Player A is on base, and Player B and C both fail drive him in. That counts as players individually leaving 2 on base? Can we pull any positives out of the first two games?

Abolish bilingual education, Gingrich urges

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 08:33 PM) this is where we (USA) are just a bunch idiots. went to italy 2 years ago. most restaurants had the menu written in at least 6 different languages. (spanish, italian, german, english, french and japanese) and we like to b**** about 1. what a joke. But the Chinese Italians Irish Germans Mexicans are invading and are going to ruin this country! Just like all of those large influxes in the past! In all fairness, its very easy for people from different countries to visit Italy due to their proximities. America is much larger and separated from every other language but Spanish and a little French by some big oceans. Also, in Hawaii, an awful lot of stuff is in Japanese. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I've got some reservations about bilingual education. Every effort should be made to teach the kids English, but we can't have them falling drastically behind in every other subject. -
