  2. West Virginia is currently outpacing the rest of the country in vaccine distribution. NPR dug into why: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/07/954409347/why-west-virginias-winning-the-race-to-get-covid-19-vaccine-into-arms And another article examining why: https://theconversation.com/the-simple-reason-west-virginia-leads-the-nation-in-vaccinating-nursing-home-residents-153274 Tear up the CVS/Walgreens contracts and start giving it to every qualified pharmacy and doctor's office in the state. Everything about this rollout has been a complete disaster.
  3. Any reason not to assume that, just like with tons of PPE shipments last Spring, this wasn't stolen by the Feds and have now simply disappeared? And don't forget, these malicious assholes have decided not to invoke the DPA to ramp up production, something that could have been started months ago.
  4. Biden's child care plan that was just announced is actually pretty strong on this stuff. Tax credits or direct subsidies for pre-K school, and expanded child tax credit too. We're paying $2500/mo right now for child care for two kids. $30k/year! We're lucky in that we can shoulder that burden, but raising children in this country is incredibly, unnecessarily expensive.
  5. https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/14/health/covid-immunity-antibodies-intl/index.html People who were infected in the first wave, nearly a year ago now, probably have pretty substantially reduced immunity and can almost certainly reinfect other people. Even people who caught it in last summer's wave are going to have pretty reduced immunity on average. It turns out that the whole "natural herd immunity" strategy that almost the entire medical and public health communities called absolutely insane and unworkable is absolutely insane and unworkable. Shots need to get into arms immediately. I sort of suspected it was the case, but it's disappointing to hear that the goal is now "100M shots by the end of 100 days," so only maybe 60-70M people with at least a single shot by May as the pandemic rages and the more contagious variants take hold.
  6. Seems to be a fair description of Pace and the Bears as well if you recognize the 7-spot 8-8 expanded playoff appearance for what it is. They're where they're at due to years of bad mistakes.
  7. The local government building my FIL runs is going to be a county vaccine clinic as soon as next Friday. Really hope they start ramping the pace of everything up. We're at 5-10% of the daily vaccinations we need to be at.
  8. The picture is from 2019 but other members of Congress say she was giving tours on 1/5/21.
  9. It was a very difficult decision do we extend everyone for 2 years, or 3???
  10. Hell of a fascist terror movement Trump built
  11. Two full divisions of NG in DC
  12. The circled people are also making the white nationalist/proud boys "OK" sign edit: fake news! still, she's proudly posing with white supremacists. glad we've got a fully Qanon'd loon in the House now
  13. Sleeping on marble floors, ouch
  14. Yes? Even if it was only 50% efficacy, that's still much better than 0% efficacy you have right now. People with underlying medical conditions are in the first tier because of their heightened risk of severe illness or death if they develop COVID. I'm not aware of any data to date that linked reduced vaccine efficacy to specific underlying medical conditions. There wouldn't have been enough people with enough of the same underlying conditions in the trials to date to really know that.
  15. Just want to go back to this. There may be a difference between Trump and Cruz--true believer vs. cynical asshole. But that's where the differences end. At best, Cruz fully knows he's been helping spread the Big Lie about the election being illegitimate and stolen for months, and that his votes last week were the culmination of that. There was no legitimacy to any of his claims, and his concerns were all bad-faith bullshit. It was mountains of red meat for the conservative base and helped further the lie that Trump didn't actually lose and that Biden/Harris are illegitimate. There's no way to differentiate the effect their actions have just because their motivations may be different. Nobody should humor any of his bullshit, his fake calls for "election integrity." He doesn't care. This was entirely about attacking Biden's legitimacy and endearing himself to the Trumpist base.
  16. Capitol Police, the FBI and the National Guard are briefing Democrats in Congress on upcoming security threats and measures for Biden's inauguration. This includes metal detectors for members of Congress. Because they're worried one of the lunatics in the House may try to assassinate Biden or Harris.
  17. There's no contrition or admission of wrong-doing by any of the people responsible. They're just on to trying to change the topic to whining about Twitter followers and how we all need to come together and unite (but if you try to hold anyone accountable there will be more violence).
  18. Exactly. You want to talk about a rigged system, there you go. Strongly outvoted for the Senate, yet still almost kept control. Outvoted in the House by five million, yet still gained seats. Lost the Presidency by 8 million votes nationally, yet came within 40k across three states of winning it again. Taking measures to make a more representative and equitable system is the opposite of rigging.
  19. While their supporters and allies were violently storming the Capitol, members of the GOP inside were refusing basic measures like wearing masks. Three Democrats who were forced to shelter in place with them have now tested positive.
  20. Sanders. Congress is full of crazy parliamentary nonsense but so is every legislative body. Check out the history of the filibuster and how it was created completely on accident and wasn't really 'discovered' for years. https://www.brookings.edu/testimonies/the-history-of-the-filibuster/ Clyborn's suggestion is terrible and was already shot down by other Dem leadership. You don't let all momentum from a serious issue dissipate before doing anything about it. Biden's team is looking into the feasibility of splitting the Senate's time 50/50 on an impeachment trial (which won't be that long anyway) and regular legislative and cabinet confirmation business. I'm pretty sure that the vote via the impeachment powers to prevent Trump from ever holding federal office again is simple majority but he'd first have to be convicted in the Senate with 67 votes.
  21. The "hypocrisy" in question here is giving every American citizen a voice in the federal government vs. violent insurrection to overturn the results of an election, don't forget.
