  1. Privatizing education is not good, actually
  2. Hope this is another one of your tongue in cheek posts and not one of the insanely credulous ones
  3. Impeachment it is, then. Call the House into session tonight and get this done.
  4. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/01/07/capitol-protests-dc-live-updates/#link-EF65NBEEYNEDZHPSTUC5H7VD34 Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) offered new details Thursday about the delayed response to assist law enforcement at the Capitol, saying the Maryland National Guard was ready to help but was “repeatedly” told they did not have the authorization needed to join the effort. Hogan received a panicked call from House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md)., who pleaded with him to send in troops from Maryland, the governor said. [...] Hogan said Maj. Gen. Timothy Gowen, the adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard, was repeatedly rebuffed by the head of the National Guard at the federal level. Gowen “kept running it up the flagpole, and we don’t have authorization,” Hogan said. “We don’t have authorization.” Ninety minutes later, Hogan said, he received a call “out of the blue, not from the secretary of defense, not through what would be normal channels,” but from Ryan McCarthy, the secretary of the Army. McCarthy asked if the Maryland guardsmen could “come as soon as possible,” Hogan recounted. “It was like, yeah, we’re waiting, we’re ready,” Hogan said.
  5. Dem leadership moved fast this morning, good. House and Senate leadership calling for immediate invocation of the 25th or they'll move to impeachment quickly. Need to impeach anyway to bar from future federal office, but that could be handled after the imminent danger is removed. Even Biden is out with uncharacteristically strong language. “They weren’t protesters. Don’t dare call them protesters. They were a riotous mob. Insurrectionists. Domestic terrorists,” President-elect Joe Biden says. "I wish we could say we couldn’t see it coming. But that wasn’t true. We COULD see it coming."
  6. Reminds me of this quote after a hurricane hit Tallahassee during the 2019 government shutdown https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/07/us/florida-government-shutdown-marianna.html “I voted for him, and he’s the one who’s doing this,” she said of Mr. Trump. “I thought he was going to do good things. He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting.”
  7. It's incredible how terribly Andrew Cuomo has handled almost every aspect of this
  8. Does DC have felony murder charges? Hit everyone who stormed the Capitol with one for each of the four deaths.
  9. Yes, basically across the street from the Capitol building.
  10. There were also photos of people in their tacticool gear with big bunches of ziptie handcuffs. They were planning for hostages.
  11. Impeachment is a privileged motion. Any member of the House can bring it to the floor, and it can skip the usual committee requirements. Coincidentally, the House adjourned until the 19th. edit: well this is at least something, hopefully they get on this ASAP
  12. It's up to the Senate to determine how long it takes. As we saw a year ago, Mitch was perfectly happy to largely rush through everything. If there is an iron-clad case for immediate removal, it could be done in a day or two. That our government doesn't really have a mechanism for removing a clearly unstable President, since the 25th is meant more for physical incapacitation, is another mark against it! M
  13. House members call for the 25th, hoping someone else will do their job. Cabinet members resign and call for impeachment, hoping someone else will shoulder their responsibility. House adjourns until after the inauguration, giving free reign for the next two weeks. Complete failure.
  14. Large, national police panopticon that manages to violently crack down on civil rights protests at the drop of a hat somehow missed this? The Chicago FOP president was fully justifying the actions of the insurrectionists. This is systemic and national. We saw over the summer that police forces don't feel accountable to civilian political leadership.
  15. She is absolutely a failure along with most or maybe all of Dem leadership, but the core of the problem is the increasingly insane right wing which is a majority of the GOP these days. If this isn't aggressively handled, and of course it won't be, it'll be emboldened. We'll see the destruction of American democracy within our lifetimes.
  16. No investigations. No hearings. No impeachment. Just pretend it all never happened and then be shocked and horrified when it happens again, but worse. Leadership.
  17. They will do nothing. Barely any of the terrorists who stormed the capitol yesterday will face consequences. And they'll be emboldened to do it again and again, just like they were when they didn't face consequences for storming state capitols over the summer. Longer Joe Scarborough cut: Right-wing media, social media, and sitting representatives are already pushing the dual "brave, bold patriots forced to do this/ANTIFA agitators actually did it" story.
  18. Peep those projections if/when the UK and SA variants take a firmer hold in the US We were so close. We have effective vaccines! But nope, gotta open everything up. Fill up the schools, indoor dining. It's safe, go out. Gotta live your lives.
  19. Don't worry, Democratic leadership is already rolling over and moving on. As we learned from all of the criminal actions of the Nixon, Reagan, HW, and W administrations, if you simply turn a blind eye to it, it'll go away! Definitely won't continually escalate. It's a complete failure of our institutions that Trump is still President today.
  20. She was climbing through a smashed and barricaded window into the final secured perimeter. There's another angle more from behind that shows she's was stepping through. Not directly related, but it was absurd to see people defending the DC police in this thread. A complete and total failure at their mission and an easy and disturbing contrast to how they and many other police forces across the country handled police-brutality protesters throughout the summer. Maybe they should have stopped these people? DC police have a half a fucking billion dollar budget. Law enforcement across the country have "intelligence fusion centers." This was all planned and discussed out in the open, and they were completely unprepared for it. Why? You don't even have to go down the rabbit hole of coordination or anything; they showed that at best they are deeply incompetent and incapable of carrying out their most basic functions. Tear it down and start over.
  21. Cops overwhelmingly love Trump
