  1. The President is still hospitalized this morning. His campaign is on the news mocking Joe Biden for wearing masks this morning
  2. It's weird how in county after country that had managed to get a handle on this, this didn't happen. What's your plan when six months from now another hundred thousand are dead, millions more sick, the economy still in the dumpster and the virus still spreading largely unchecked?
  3. Hospitalizations are up over the past week + as well.
  4. It's not about punishment. It's about getting a pandemic under control. We've tried letting things be open with "responsible" restrictions and relying on "personal responsibility." It's been a total failure, and we never got this thing under control. Hundreds of thousands dead. Millions sick. 30k+ on the hospital right now, including the President. We should have many more things closed right now until cases are down to a manageable level. Confirmed cases from a single White House party last weekend are more than the entire country of Australia yesterday. The US is among the worst on the world at handling this. Going to eat outdoors is lower risk than indoors, but indoors are still getting lots of traffic. And eating outdoors at a restaurant is still less safe than staying home. It's all about risk probabilities. You are engaging in higher risk activities, increasing the chance of spreading the deadly virus on the margins. But when millions of people are all adding a tiny fraction, it adds up to endemic spread and rolling waves of uncontrolled outbreaks across the country. We're all punished by this.
  5. I want the federal government to mount a strong and effective response to an epidemic so that we don't have hundreds of thousands dead, millions more sick, and trillions in economic damage with things looking like we're going into Round 3 rather than any recovery. But some people want restaurants and bars open so
  6. The messages out of the White House are mixed and unreliable, but it does seem like he was on supplemental oxygen at some point. He's been given experimental drugs as well. It must be pretty serious.
  7. Top government officials still appear to have next to no understanding of how this virus works and how to handle exposures.
  8. We've tried this approach. 200000+ dead and counting, no end in sight. It doesn't work.
  9. Nothing out of the White House is reliable right now and everyone is contradicting themselves. What seems clear is that Trump deteriorated enough yesterday that they became seriously concerned, but also that they probably knowingly exposed a bunch of donors at a fundraiser Thursday night, and probably knew before Thursday or at least had a good idea.
  10. Chris Christie is positive now, too. Their personal irresponsibility endangers their own lives and many others around them. We've very conclusive evidence that relying on personal responsibility is not the way to handle a pandemic. We need strong and strict public policy measures to get things under control, and then the willingness to reimplement as necessary to stamp out subsequent outbreaks.
  11. Going to the hospital for a multi day stay and getting the highest tested dose of an experimental treatment are both signs that the medical staff are very seriously concerned.
  12. Weirdly enough, I've managed to not starve to death even though I haven't set foot inside restaurant in 7 months. You don't have to go to a restaurant to eat, as it turns out. Our government completely failed on so many levels, and businesses are suffering as a result, but bars are restaurants are the ones doing a lot of harm right now. It's not a matter of "personal responsibility" if the bars and restaurants being open even with perfect adherence to these rules means increased community transmission and more dead people. It seems surreal to be arguing this when we're still dealing with an unchecked pandemic that's been going in rolling waves around the country for months with no end in sight. The personally responsible thing to do is to stay home and stay distant and not go engage in needlessly endangering behavior for you and your community. The public-policy responsible thing is to give these businesses (and their workers) money to get through this thing while keeping them shut down until things are under control, but that part is out of our control. e: wiping down tables and hand sanitizer is not bad but it's more hygenie theater than anything. This thing spreads primarily through the air. Since you're in a restaurant eating and drinking, you and many others are unmasked for much of the time. That's very irresponsible behavior.
  13. The WH confirmed that Trump is experiencing "mild" symptoms.
  14. This sounds like trying to justify actions you know deep down aren't responsible.
  15. High MP cameras are so relatively cheap these days. How does every sporting venue not have cameras down every foul line/side line/goal line looking both directions??
