  1. From Rotoworld:

Diamondbacks optioned outfielder Chris Young to Triple-A Reno.

Young's numbers have fallen flat since he signed a five-year, $28 million deal before the '08 season. The 25-year-old had 32 dingers and 68 RBI in 2007, 22 homers and 85 RBI in 2008 and is batting just .194 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 103 games this season. Trent Oeltjen may enjoy an extended stay in the bigs to help with the lack of depth in the outfield. Ryan Roberts might also see some action at a corner outfield spot. Aug. 10 - 6:06 pm et

Somewhere, Phil Rogers is weeping quietly.

  2. Lost in the 14-0 beatdown of the Smokies is 6 shutout innings for Ely. 4 hits, 1 BB, 5 K's.

Also, Viciedo now 3-4 with 3 RBI's. And a homerun for Marrero.

Our 3B prospects are looking good now. Viciedo bordering on a .280 average, and Morel up to .280 after a 3-4 night. If Morel gets moved up to AA soon, it will be interesting to see where Viciedo plays.

This was from a scouting report on Morel last year when the Sox drafted him:

SCOUTING REPORT: Morel's quietly-aggressive, blue-collar approach to the game makes him a favorite of coaches, and scouts significantly warmed up to him this spring, as well, after he profiled as little more than a mid-round selection entering the 2008 season. He doesn't do anything with flash and none of his tools really stick out, but Morel matured as a hitter this year. He had a knack for finding the sweet spot, added power as he learned to backspin balls better and hit the curveball more consistently. He developed into a sound clutch hitter. With a week remaining in the season, he was hitting .364-7-56—and his average and RBIs were team-leading figures. It was a significant step up from 2007, when he batted .333-5-31. His improvement on defense was just as subtle. He makes all the routine plays at third base, shows solid instincts for the position and displays above-average arm strength when he needs to. He also has average speed and is an alert base runner. Some teams believe Morel's aggressive approach might make him well-suited to become a catcher down the road.—ALLAN SIMPSON

With Flowers & Phegley both in the system, not sure the Sox would consider that. Still think Viciedo gets moved to a corner OF spot eventually.

  4. As iffy as DJ pitched Friday, he was on it tonight. Pena & Thornton were solid as well. Hoping that Dotel can be another reliable arm in the late innings. Hope Linebrink is available for mopup duty.

Pods may be the dumbest man in the majors but he sure can hit!

Soriano scoffs in your general direction.

  5. Viciedo with a nice 3/5 night with a bomb & a double. And since joining B-ham, Hudson's ERA is 1.79. The most runs he's given up in a start is 5 in a ND against Mobile. The most hits in an outing is 7, also against Mobile & Mississippi. Man, I hope that injury isn't too serious. Because he has been locked in this entire year.

And his WHIP coming into tonight's game for the year: 0.90. Very very nice.
