  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 11:31 AM) Fine. Then the Braves can win the NL East. The same Braves that have scored a grand total of 1 run in the last 5 games? The same Braves that have lost 5 straight and 9 of their last 12? I'm in agreement that that division is up for grabs, but let's face it, that Mets team is getting a little ancient at some positions, and I don't think Minaya is going to give away their future at some positions for Mark or Jose. He didn't do it for Zito, and I doubt he does it this year. That's not saying we can't get some talent for one of them, but I don't think it is going to be two of their top 5 prospects. Maybe Humber and someone in low A-ball with a reasonably high ceiling?
  2. Arizona's once solid starting rotation suddenly looks very, very old. And Seattle is competing somewhat unexpectedly, but they still are throwing Jeff Weaver out there. Both teams are likely interested...Both have some interesting pieces they could offer. Arizona is always intriguing, as their farm system is loaded...
  3. I think the point the writer is trying to get across is that the Mets would be more willing to part with some of their talent to get Contreras, who has 2.5 years left on his contract, than they would to rent Mark. That doesn't mean, however, that they are willing to give top prospects for Jose. It just means they may be willing to give us a dime for Jose rather than the nickle they would have given for Buehrle. I think we should drop the Pelfrey and one of Gomez/Milledge/Humber fantasies.
  4. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 10:05 AM) So, does Contreras want to go back to NYC? That might keep him from waiving his no-trade clause. What is Minaya's fascination with over-paying aging, injury-prone pitchers who no longer have their best stuff? Methinks he's not as good a GM as the media portrays him as. To be honest with you, take a look at last year's crop of free agent pitchers, what they're being paid right now, and what numbers they are putting up. When juxtaposed against guys like Vicente Padilla, Adam Eaton, Jeff Weaver, Jeff Suppan, Barry Zito, etc, Jose really doesn't look quite as bad as some of you would like to think. As old as many people like to claim he is, Jose has been extremely durable over his career, would likely pitch well in a pitcher's park (at least until Citi Field is completed) and in the National League. His contract is relatively expensive but not unwieldly for the Mets. He would add some stability to that rotation, as well as postseason experience. I don't believe the Mets will give up any of their elite prospects, but perhaps someone like Phil Humber might be available...
  5. QUOTE(Omar Minaya @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 12:22 AM) who said there was anything more to it? this is a thread talking about the mets interest in buehrle. I am just representing what is likely to be the Mets' interest in Buehrle. I thought it'd be useful in light of the ridiculous trade proposals in this thread. And it was. Thanks for your input. I'm certain reality is somewhere in the middle of what White Sox fans expect to get back, and what Mets fans claim they would be willing to give.
  6. QUOTE(Omar Minaya @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 12:02 AM) White Sox fans Buerhle is a good pitcher. He has roughly the same career numbers as Willis does, and has had a good year. Last year was a little troubling, and the amount of HRs he gives up is a bit disconcerting. That being said, he is definitely a quality pitcher who would look good on the Mets, be it this year after a trade, or next year as a free agent. However, looking through this thread, I have seen a ton of ridiculous trade proposals, and though several posters have tried to reconcile the demands of many with reality, it still seems that some of you don't fully understand how trading "rentals" works and what the Mets are willing to give up. Fernado Martinez - This kid is completely untouchable. There is a better chance of a transvestite rodeo clown being elected president than Martinez being included in a trade for Buerhle. Ditto goes for Guerra. As for Pelfrey/Humber/Milledge/Gomez - Omar would probably only give up one of them for Buerhle. Look at his reluctance in trading prospects for Zito - he has no desire to do so. Basically, there will be no "package" for Buerhle comprised of two or three of them. Very likely, Omar wouldn't give up one of them, let alone several of them. Many of you have posted saying that if Omar is unwilling to give up Milledge or Milledge+, then they don't get Buerhle. Well, that will be the case. The Mets have gotten superb pitching this year - and could very possibly get a revitalized Pedro back. Anyways, that's pretty much the Mets side of the story. If you want to doubt me, so be it, but I think you'll find that reality will closely mirror what I'm saying. Thanks for the NY perspective, Omar. I believe most of what you're saying, although I think if Kenny asked for Humber as a centerpiece, your namesake would roll with that. Also, while Milledge has a high ceiling, he isn't the untouchable he once was. Regardless, he's injured right now, as you undoubtedly know, so he isn't going anywhere. As for that transvestite rodeo clown, I'm certain a few years ago, some were saying the chances of some players being dealt had the same probability as the son of a goat herder becoming President. Never say never. If the Mets want to offer us a package of B-level guys, I'll take my draft picks, same as Billy did.
  7. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 11:45 PM) I've been reading a lot of this from afar, luckily, I haven't had to suffer from watching any of the losses since I've been out of the country since June 13th. I wish I had been out of the country.... Honestly, there is no one to blame for Mark being traded other than ourselves and the Detroit Tigers. The ridiculous starting pitching received from both the 05' White Sox and the 06' Tigers has done nothing but underscore how far a very good rotation can take a team. It's touched off a ridiculous market effect whereby anyone who can come close to throwing 180 league-average innings is being paid eight figures annually. The market will eventually correct itself- several teams are already eating huge contracts and getting little or nothing on their investments- but it won't happen in time to save Mark. Additionally, the White Sox are now sufferring from the monster they helped create in that teams hoping to avoid paying market rate (which is ridiculous) for pitching are now holding on to pre-arbitration eligible players like never before, further weakening the trade value of veterans close to hitting FA. Unfortunately, Mark has become the beneficiary of the "perfect storm" for solid and durable starting pitching, and it is coming at the cost of the White Sox themselves...
  8. It probably doesn't matter. To summarize some stuff over at Sons of Sam Horn: 1) Boston media outlets are now claiming this was all nonsense. 2) Additionally, Ken Rosenthal (who always seems to know what is going on) supposedly was on WFAN and stated the Buehrle to Boston rumors were completely out of hand. He claimed nothing is anywhere even close. And he still insists a deal involving the Mets or Brewers is more likely. 3) Boston supposedly is looking for a hard-throwing rhp, which could explain them scouting us. Who knows what is conjured up, what was speculation and was spun as reality, or what is just pure nonsense, but I have to believe if something was really that close, one or both of Rosenthal or Gammons would have been all over it tonight. Finally, here is an article dismissing Buchholz as being involved, for the time being, anyways: http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?he...8f-a2000fff530d
  9. I just want the deal to be done. I'm on the golf course today and all I can do is worry about what we are getting back from Boston. I'm pretty much accustomed to being miserable about losing EVERY SINGLE GAME lately, but what happens in the next month could very well define what happens for the next 5 years. That makes me very nervous.
  10. QUOTE(greg775 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 10:06 PM) Come back and post after the trade is made. I envision the Sox getting 3 "top prospects" minor leaguers for Mark. Let's see if we get "quality position players" back. I hope we do; I don't see it. No contender is going to give up good everyday players for Mark. They are contenders because those other guys are doing well. No non contender will want him as he approaches free agency. I'm not suggesting those players will be studs this year. I'm saying for the future of this organization, we need young position players, pre-arbitration eligible. The only way that's happening is if we unload a few guys here.
  11. QUOTE(POPPY_HIDALGO @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 09:38 PM) He has big time strike out potential in my opinion. The guy looks lost out there. I'd rather have a man at 3rd than some child who looks like a fool against major league pitching more than half the time. He actually has one of the higher batting averages on the team right now...
  12. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 09:36 PM) Buerhle Iguchi Pedroia Pena #2 or #3 best BoSox SP prospect Am I the only one who thinks that'd be a horses*** trade? Pedroia looks like he may be a nice little player, but I have no use for Pena and I honestly don't even really want another sp prospect unless he is can't miss, and that isn't going to happen.
  13. I just don't get this crap. Are you seeing this team on the field? Are you seeing the crap coming up through our system? We need to move SOMEONE of value to get some quality position players back. The ONLY person on this club that is significantly valuable AND NOT a low cost player happens to be Mark. I'm sorry, but we need to deal him as much to improve this club as because we should not pay him 5/$80.
  14. QUOTE(lemon44 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 08:41 PM) No way the Brewers give up Bruan,Weeks,or Gallardo. The deal would be for some pitcher in AA OR AAA and/or Gynn Jr. I don't doubt what you say. But at some point someone has to offer something of reasonable quality for Mark.
  15. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 08:39 PM) erick aybar is behind orlando cabrera and brandon wood is coming soon.....wood or aybar could probably be had, but only for buerhle probably, as the angels never trade prospects...er at least rarely I sincerely doubt Wood could be had. Aybar, yes. Wood, no.
  16. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 08:19 PM) We rented Freddie Garcia for far more than 2 B prospects (sure we extended him - after we rented him). People were going ga-ga over the opportunity to rent AJ Burnett 2 years ago ( 2 of MCCarthy, Crede, Conteras and Sweeney etc.). It's funny how when we are looking to rent, the price isn't so cheap. I actually believe we came to an agreement with Florida for Burnett but he would not agree to sign an extension with us, so the deal was squashed.
  17. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 07:56 PM) That seems awful shady. If Kenny and the org told the Shaffer to take Blanton and he took another guy than I think he'd have been fired on the spot. Yeah, it seemed odd to me, but it was what Joe reported this morning. I think one must remember that this organization is filled with staffers who have been around for quite awhile- many since Jerry and his group of investors bought the franchise in 1981. Take a look at the media guide- it's ridiculous how long guys have been around. This organization has been run like a family business for years and years, rather than the corporations most other franchises are operated like.
  18. QUOTE(Jake @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 07:54 PM) How about Weeks and Braun for Buehrle and Iguchi? A little less lopsided. Then what will we do with Fields? We'll have two third basemen this season and three for next season. Surely one could be moved to the OF, probably Braun, since Fields has looked fairly good at third while Braun is a supposed butcher. I severely doubt the Brewers move Braun. They've been awaiting his arrival for some time now- he's been drawing comparisons to David Wright for three years. Weeks, possibly, but you're right, Iguchi would need to be included. I think Mark and Tadahito for Weeks is a bit much, and I don't know the Brewers system very well, but I imagine the other player(s) you'd be getting back would not be contributors on the major league level. I really think Weeks could be possible, but Braun and Gallardo are probably not.
  19. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 01:39 PM) Ah yes, the man who drafted Kris Honel (Heilman taken 2 picks later), Royce Ring (James Loney taken by LA with the next pick), Brian Anderson (Conor Jackson taken 4 picks later, Billingsley 9 picks later, Carlos Quentin 14 picks later), Tim Hummel, Mike Morse, Heath Phillips, Jeremy Reed, Josh Rupe, Chris Getz, Sean Tracey, Ryan Sweeney, Robert Valido, and Ricardo Nanita. Interestingly, Joe Cowley was on the Score this morning and said Shaffer was supposed to take Joe Blanton instead of Royce Ring and the organization was fuming about it.
  20. Singleton has improved by leaps and bounds. I really think I like him in there. Farmio has a lot of talent, but he's just gotten stale at this point. At least he hasn't brought up how Brian Daubach likes strawberry ice cream much this year.
  21. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 07:24 PM) I would trade Buehrle straight up for Gallardo, but besides that the Brewers dont have many prospects im interested in. Maybe if they soured on Weeks a deal with him and Braun would be good. But I doubt that will happen even moreso than I expect to get Gallardo. A deal for Weeks AND Braun would be freaking fantastic. But it ain't happeing. The Brewers are going to want to hold on to their major league talent. They aren't going to acquire Buehrle only to deal away two major league starting position players.
  22. There isn't a chance in hell the Brewers are moving Gallardo, especially after a great start today. He's untouchable.
  23. It's time to put away "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey and officially make "No Easy Way Out" by Robert Tepper (off the Rocky IV Soundtrack) as our official theme song.
  24. Well that's pretty close to what Vazquez got, which isn't the point, but I'm wondering what number Steff is referring to?
  25. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 06:04 PM) Why does everybody keep throwing his name around? If he's better than Thorman, why wouldn't they trade Thorman instead? Because if Thorman can handle first base, and they already have McCann as a catcher, they can deal Salty, who has a ton of trade value, for something else they need, namely, younng starting pitching or an OF to replace Andruw Jones. Chipper is also becoming an issue as he gets injured every other game.
