Honestly, how often do people who actually own guns for "home protection" actually brandish them? I mean I get that a gun owner will say an event only needs to occur once in one's lifetime to justify owning a handgun for one's entire life, but are there statistics on this?

QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 02:03 PM) Aaron Swartz would have been 31 today. May he RIP. Thanks for mentioning this. Will definitely check out the documentary.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 06:14 AM) Go back and use your old phone, the fingerprint sensor already feels downright archaic as when it came out and you had to go back to "swipe to unlock". I used to hate opening apps that would make me use the fingerprint sensor, now I open it them and it scans my face and bam -- authenticated into the app seamlessly. It's one flaw is not being able to open the phone easily when its laying on my desk -- that was one of the best things about the FRONT FACING fingerprint scanner. It's the same flaw about rear facing scanners, you have to pick up the phone every time you want to do something, at least momentarily until it's unlocked. I have a 6+ for my work phone, so I still have to remain fluent in both Already gets a bit confusing !

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 09:09 AM) Tough call at this point on whether a team would rather have Acuna or Jimenez. Acuna has the better all around tools with speed and fielding, and could be a potential 30-30 guy in center field. Jimenez currently has the better hit tool and projects to have better power. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/260529020/pi...z-ronald-acuna/ Callis said it's very close, but he would lean Acuna due to the better speed and glove. Jimenez could very well be a player that absolutely tears the cover off the ball in 2018 as he starts to hone his power potential. If we didn't have Robert in the system, I would move Jimenez for Acuna.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 12:00 PM) After a full weekend with the X -- this thing is awesome. Screen is simply amazing. I like the facial recognition. Woke up in the middle of the night last night, picked the phone off the wireless charger, looked at it in complete darkness, and it unlocked like a charm. Also appreciate not having the home button. Even though I like the fingerprint scanner, I often found if I was washing dishes or something and my phone rang, it might be difficult to get to my phone right away because it couldn't read wet fingers. The facial scanner eliminates that issue. The other thing I have to hand to Apple, is that they have mastered the process of activating the new phone. Everything was transferred over seamlessly...including access to my paired devices, such as my Apple TV units, which was nice.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 12:45 PM) Oh, man, tell me I'm not the only one that remembers that post. I think it was in the thread where SI or ESPN or someone posted their all-next-decade team in 2009. We were all projecting what we thought peak Beckham was going to look like, and someone posted in non-green font that he/she thought "like Jeter but better." There were a LOT of Jeter comparisons, not only around here but even nationally. I remember one of Gordon's first series was against NY, and they even interviewed Jeter about Beckham.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 12:09 PM) My gut feeling is that Soto is resigned with a minor league contract... if not, it will be a similar type of move. I don't think the Sox will really spend (either money or prospects) anything significant in the catching position. I really believe they think Collins is a year or two away. I think it is important, even if they believe Collins will be ready in '19, that we sign a good framer for whomever ends up being our ace. I like the idea of the "personal catcher" for a guy like Rodon or maybe even Kopech that might benefit.

QUOTE (Tony @ Nov 5, 2017 -> 12:57 PM) That person is a stupid head. If he continues on this path, I don't see anything that will stop the Sox from taking the same call-up approach as they did with Moncada. He'll be up earlier than Moncada I think...he's going to rake wherever they put him...as soon as the service time date passes, they will bring him up.

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 4, 2017 -> 04:44 PM) Finances through Apple. So would I have to ship it to them when I upgraded? Yeah, unless you pay it off via installments. They already sent me a box to ship my iPhone 7 back when I get the X on Monday.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 4, 2017 -> 07:12 AM) Nor would Boston offer those players (not Bogaerts, anyway) Didn't that framework include one of the other Marlins' outfielders though?

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 07:09 PM) I get mine from Apple every year. Yeah, but is the financing through Apple or your carrier? For instance, for my iPhone 6+ I used ATT Next, which was basically an installment plan. You can trade your phone in, but only after you pay off all the installments. With my iPhone 7, I went with the Apple iPhone upgrade program, which gave me the option of trading in after a year, prior to paying off all the installments. So essentially, I paid a higher monthly cost for the optionality. So when the iPhone X came out, I basically "struck" upon the option, which results in me just needing to trade the phone back into them. I get out of paying half the installments, but I am unable to capture any resale/trade value from the phone by doing so.

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) My 7 is the first iPhone I technically don’t own since they make you pay monthly now. Used to send my old ones to Gazelle but doubt I can do that anymore so what do you do with old phone you’re “renting”? Are you using the Apple iPhone upgrade program or one through your carrier?

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 08:15 AM) In your first 2 points you seem to be trying to justify his actions somewhat. Consent or not shouldn't matter and shouldn't even be part of the conversation. There is obviously some law in place. Just watch some of the old 'To Catch a Predator' episodes with Chris Hansen. Those dudes were never even in the same room as a minor. But the intent was clear and they were all taken to trial and punished. So just because "nothing happened" doesn't mean a crime wasn't committed. There is some gray area in the terminology but if the victim felt uncomfortable then it was harassment at the very least. What you are referring to are laws that have been enacted that punish predators on the internet, however. These are situations where people often posed as someone else and engaged in explicit sexual conversations/photo trading, etc., and then attempted to lure the minor to engage in actual sexual acts. That is quite different than a 26 year old inviting a minor colleague to a party, and then making a pass or a move on him, in 1986. We all see that the actual intentions may have not been a whole lot different, but from a legal perspective, those situations are quite distinct.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 08:15 AM) Yeah, I haven't been either, but I enrolled in the Apple upgrade program last year (and paid a premium for the upgrade optionality) so I figure I may as well use it. In my experience, Apple tends to underpromise and overdeliver, so I wouldn't be surprised if we both receive them earlier. Received the email this morning that my delivery date is now November 8, well in advance of the initial 17-24 estimate.

I think everyone here, Reddy and myself included, is condemning adults preying on 14 year olds. And if that is how you want to characterize Spacey,s behavior in this instance, as "preying," I am down with that. I think the point I am trying to make (and I think Reddy is with me), is that this type of behavior, when allowed to go unchecked, because of wealth, iinfluence, etc, tends to occur more often than in areas of society where those factors are absent. In my view, that isn't because these people tend to be any more "deviant" than the rest of us, but perhaps simply as a result of that behavior being more exempt from normal social and legal norms.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 07:27 PM) Shack, you’re a father, how would you feel if an adult forced himself on your 14 year old son? We’re not talking about some guy being a little aggressive at the bar as he’s hitting on a girl. We’re talking an adult man who lured a child to his house and purposely tried to engage in sexual activities with said child. I’m sure there are things that are equally worse, but being molested or the threat of being molested isn’t something that should be taken lightly. And I’m not cool with any form of child abuse, whether sexual, physical, or emotional. I’m not going to ask for any specific examples, but more likely than not I’d demonstrate similar outrage. I’ve seen firsthand how various types of trauma can impact kids’ lives and quite frankly it sucks watching people struggle with these demons for what can be years & years. Obviously that isn't something any father (or mother) wants to think about. And I am not suggesting that we should turn a blind eye to situations wherein our children are threatened by adults in a sexual manner. I suppose what I am suggesting is that we should focus on all the things that impact the lives of adolescents (or children) to an equal degree that we might to situations like this. I agree with Reddy that some kids are forced to grow up more quickly than others. Kids that grow up in urban environments, particularly, but also those that are involved in some sort of hypercompetitive endeavors, such as acting, sports, etc. This is indeed, a fact of real life. To be candid, I don't sympathize as much with Rapp as others here do. That doesn't make what Spacey did any more appropriate, but I think the amount of outrage expressed is energy that might be better spent on all sorts of other support mechanisms for our children, whether that be the way they are treated by their peers, their teachers, their coaches, etc. that seem to draw far less attention. My own experience tells me that I was far better able to cope with a pervert making a pass at me than someone that I trusted, cared for, or believed in taking advantage of me. But those are exactly that - only my own experiences.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 07:02 PM) If the speculation is correct on what the Marlins might get in return for Stanton, he's worth very little compared to the player that he is. That contract is horrible in that it heavily favors Stanton in every aspect with nothing but risk for the team that takes it on. The opt-out is scarier than people think. By the time Stanton becomes eligible to opt-out, Machado/Harper/Arenado will have reset the market with their mega deals. If Stanton continues slugging over the next three seasons, he will not only opt-out, but will get a huge raise thanks to those three players. Don't remember who said it yesterday, but a poster said something along the lines of that it's better to pay for a big contract on the FA market than take on Stanton's contract and I agree. I'm not sure I understand. Ultimately, in today's current thinking, a player's value in generally attributed to the surplus value he creates beyond what he is being paid. Stanton's trade value has little to do with his on-field performance, and everything to do with his lack of surplus value, due to the massive obligations owed to him as a result of his contract. If we are to presume that Stanton will indeed opt-out, I think that presumption must assume that he has indeed performed very well in the years leading up to his opt-out provision. Secondly, if it is true that Machado/Harper/Arenado will indeed reset the market, than it is probably fair to assume that Stanton, should he continue to perform well, is not as large a liability as was once presumed. This all comes down to the asking price; if the market values Stanton enough to bring back significant assets to the Marlins, than it would appear that some teams are willing to risk that Stanton will underperform, however, that there is a reasonable likelihood that his contract will not seem as onerous as it might today. If the return, on the other hand, only brings back salary relief, than teams apparently believe he is fully compensated. In regards to the trading versus FA acquisition, I am not sure I agree. While a trade usually requires relinquishing some of your own assets (other than money), there is a certainty in regards to the player's contract that simply does not exist via FA.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 06:43 PM) I’m not saying you aren’t, but I think adults making advances on legit children (not just minors) is something we should all be sensitive about. I’m willing to lose my s*** on this particular subject. Yeah, I get it. I guess I'll just say this...I've found that people have done far worse things to me as an adolescent (that don't garner near the type of outrage that this has), that shaped and impacted my life as an adult, than someone making unwanted advances towards me.
