QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:45 AM) There is also this list going around http://deadspin.com/sports/is-this-the-lis...oned-333479.php This is a regurgitation of the other list that was posted.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:40 AM) Some names are starting to come out... from CNBC,,, Roger Clemens, Varitek, Damon, Pujols, Garciapara, Giambi, are some notables. I'll keep watching. These are all names from that list I've seen...

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:25 AM) Please don't use Kenny going to Stanford as evidence he is smart. He went to play sports. He didn't graduate and I think was only there for a year or so. So now you are claiming he is not intelligent at all? Do you not believe he is articulate? Do you honestly believe JR hired him, as opposed to all the other former WS players, because he did not find him intelligent? I'm not going to go so far as to claim he is some sort of "genius," but he certainly appears to be far more intelligent than the average "jock" who attends a university on an athletic scholarship. Additionally, he's spent 26 seasons in the baseball industry. How many have all of us spent? I doubt the entire collection of posters on this forum combined have spent 26 seasons in the baseball industry. Again, I am not trying to stifle criticism or commentary. But to claim he is "not smart" is absolutely inaccurate.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:25 AM) Reason to doubt that list - at least one player's name is misspelled. I doubt that if this was taken directly from the report, that there would be any of those. Sox players from that list: Belle, Cordero, Canseco, Everett, Sosa Also, do you figure that the Jerry Hairston on that list is Sr or Jr? That list seems like all the obvious suspects to me. Therefore, I tend to doubt its the correct list. It's probably not "the list," but instead from some source that leaked it. It has undoubtedly been transcribed many times in many different forms, but I don't doubt it's validity. I think there are probably some names that are missing, and maybe a few that shouldn't be on there (Wally Joyner?), but all in all, it's probably fairly accurate.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 09:47 AM) Because the Sox won it all in 2005, Ken Williams is considered untouchable. Yes, he deserves some credit there, but it's not 2005 anymore. He now oversees one of the worst teams in pro baseball and one of the worst farm systems in pro baseball. I dont know when the time comes, but he DOES NOT have tenure. Either he turns this thing around or finds work elsewhere in my view. No, he's not untouchable. What the 05' season does for him is give him a "track record." It doesn't give him tenure, or make him untouchable. I don't blame people who criticize him. But when you take a step back, and look at what many here were saying about him from October of 05' until about September of 06', it's quite humorous how quickly people changed their viewpoints and opinions. Really laughable, actually. No one is arguing that he's untouchable. But he can only put the players on the field. And when they don't perform, well, they don't perform. It's then that I look to KW's track record and give him some slack. Not a never-ending rope, but some slack.

Oh, forgot a few Cubs. Felix Heredia, Kyle Farnsworth, Ismael Valdez, Jerry Hairston, Nomar, Nefii Perez and Julian Tavarez. Oh, and Wil Cordero for the Sox (and Cubs?).

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 09:01 AM) Yes, KW was the architect responsible for the giant fall our team has had since the ASB 2006. He deserves credit for 2005, but also blame for 2006, 2007 and our last-place 2008 finish. Yeah, he should have seen that coming. He should have known that the team that was 58-30 heading into the 06' ASB would suddenly collapse....

Rangers non-tendered RHP Akinori Otsuka

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:54 AM) When did I say it turned out badly? I was only saying that it's possible that signing Gagne and handing him the closer role, when you already have a dominant closer, might -- might -- signal that you don't really have much confidence in that closer. Just throwing out another reason the Rangers might have for nontendering AO, that's all. Oh, I'm sorry. I see what you were saying now. Sorry, I misunderstood you. It's a bit early still... I don't think it has to do with Otsuka's ability...as you said, he was a dominant closer. I think it has more to do with how is rehab is coming along or something they know about his arm... -
Rangers non-tendered RHP Akinori Otsuka

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 07:56 AM) Maybe the answer is in the question -- This is the team that signed Gagne. Maybe they never trusted Otsuka that much to begin with, and now he's going to be 36 and coming off surgery. All just speculation, of course. I'm sure whatever contract he signs will have some incentives, but how much will he get in guaranteed money? $3 mil? Any guesses? Gagne actually pitched very well for the Rangers, and then netted them Kason Gabbard, David Murphy, and Engel Beltre from the Red Sox. I don't think signing Gagne was a negative experience at all for them. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 11:36 PM) Well this means that the Mariners still need a SP for the back of their rotation. They could just go out and sign Carlos Silva to fill that need, but maybe the Sox should be offering Contreras to them and see if they bite? EDIT: And the D-Backs as well. Well, it really means is that the M's are now heavily involved in Bedard as well, offering a package of Adam Jones and Brandon Morrow. And the DBacks are chasing Dan Haren.

Here we go again.... I really don't mind the second guessing and the criticism, but the "Kenny is stupid" nonsense is really ridiculous. Yeah, the Stanford guy that played the game, was director of the farm system, and now GM of several years is just plain "stupid." But we the message board posters, who have no clue what actually goes on other than what we read in the media are the "intelligent" ones. How absolutely ignorant. As for Fields, Kenny will not trade him unless he gets a very significant piece in return. While he's shown he will trade anyone for what he feels is the right piece, he isn't going to deal away Fields, whom he views as a future all-star, for a marginal upgrade in Crisp. Sure, Fields was available for MCab. He would be available for a frontline pitcher. But he's not going to be available for Coco Crisp. We all know how badly Kenny wanted Scott Linebrink over the past two seasons. The Padres demanded Fields in return. The deal wasn't made. So I think it's clear it's not going to be made for Crisp.

I have a feeling his rehab isn't going quite as well as some are led to believe. Seems quite odd that they would non-tender him if he was completely healthy and they thought he could be effective. This is the team that signed Eric Gagne. Why would they non-tender Otsuka? -
QUOTE(Brian @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 09:43 PM) Crawford available? Doubt it with Young and Dukes no longer with them, and Baldelli perennially injured...

If this is accurate, it looks like the Bedard to the Dodgers deal is off. Which hopefully does not mean he goes to the Indians...

You're the GM. Firesale is the plan.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 03:39 PM) Good call hitless. I'm not sure though if that bump occurs if he waives his NTC now though. Notice that escalator is listed in the timeframe where he has no no trade protection. You'd have to see the language of the contract, but from that summary, it appears that the escalator does not occur if you get him to waive his NTC this season. -

QUOTE(Chombi @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 01:35 PM) IAMSHACK...Didn't even see your's at first. Anyways, Buehrle doesnt get us Rasmus. Let alone Rasmus and more. Rasmus they didn't even want to deal for Bedard but bit. The only way they do it is if they truly want that hometown boy. Otherwise, I don't see it. Maybe straight up. Rasmus was made available for Bedard. I think Buehrle is another case where he would be made available. Maybe they would take Dye back as well. How do you figure you'll be able to get Mark to agree to go to Seattle? And Jim? -
QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 01:23 PM) With Bedard and Roberts now available, the time is now for Kenny to swoop in... Mike North mentioned this morning about sending Uribe, Gio, and Fields to Baltamore for those two. That may actually work... maybe we would have to throw in a Sweeney or Owens to solidify the deal, but if available Kenny has to do this... I think you'd have to give up more than that package for the two of them.... More like Fields/Gio/Richar/Danks/Sweeney
-
QUOTE(lostfan @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 12:52 PM) But if this team did sign Rowand, who would lead off? Owens is really the only one... Cabrera is the next best thing but he really isn't a leadoff guy. We'd still be in bad shape. Which is why any signing of Rowand should probably accompany a trade bringing in a leadoff man....
-
Just in case anyone was wondering, this is Roberts' contract situation: Brian Roberts 2 years/$14.3M (2008-09) signed extension 3/07 08:$6.3M, 09:$8M limited no-trade clause allowing Roberts to block deals to a small number of clubs each season agent: Mark Pieper ML service: 4.131

Barring a few major trades, is it even worth signing Rowand? Sure, you can trade for BRob, sign Rowand, perhaps make a run at a starting pitcher- a combination of moves such as those could make you competitve. But signing Rowand and making a few minor changes doesn't seem to accomplish anything other than spending another $13 million annually on a 3rd or 4th place team. I certainly hope Kenny is pondering this. Sure would be crazy if suddenly he had a firesale and acquired a ton of young players...
