QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 12:10 PM) Are you sure the Dodgers offered on Roberts? Kent just exercised his option and is slated to play 2nd and they have Pierre in CF. I know the Cubs will be after Roberts but besides that the Sox would be the only other team. If they could get Roberts with Richar and a prospect or two (not named Gio) than I think thats a move you make (ink Rowand and you really do have a pretty damn nice looking lineup). The rotation would be shaky, no doubt, but it has two good front of the rotation guys, a major questionmark in Jose, and a couple young pitchers with some upside (maybe not Andrew Miller upside ,but both have major league stuff). Yeah, it doesn't seem as though they have room for a CF, but I just read his name mentioned along with Bedard as possibly heading to LAD. I did read that the Dodgers were trying to ditch Pierre, but I doubt they would acquire Roberts to play OF (they have Jones in CF now, actually). If the Cubs are one of the only teams in on Roberts, you have to wonder where the Rockies are? I would move them Richar/Egbert/Sweeney or something I guess...

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) brian roberts would look so good on the south side. is there any chance? Sure. Just have to beat the Cubs or Dodgers offer.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 12:03 PM) I think the real reason Fukudome requested #1 is because that is the number he wore in Japan. Fair enough...I was just rehashing what the brilliant BRUCE! Levine said...

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) Speaking of the Patterson name.. is Corey a f/a or is he still signed with the Orioles? I wouldnt mind taking a flyer on him, he could even leadoff for us. FA
-
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 11:52 AM) You don't think having Eric Patterson included in a Roberts deal is a possibility? And I've read the Orioles would be asking for Ronny Cedeno back in a BRob deal...
-
Just want to add I read word of this deal over an hour ago. It seems some "inside" sources of the Orioles I have read are reputable. Therefore, it's probably safe to assume that the Dodgers bailed on taking back Tejada in the deal, or they are waiting on Kuroda before they decide it's worth it to go after Bedard at all. This is bad news. Could mean the Indians become the favorite to grab Bedard.
-
Tejada has been dealt. Apparently the Dodgers are waiting to see whether Kuroda is going to sign with them and have put a deal for Bedard on hold. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/basebal...,0,378258.story

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 10:10 AM) I said it right away in this thread. Go back and look at the first few posts after he announced. Ahh, thanks. I just bought a ps3 to give me something to take my mind of the White Sox, so I didn't hear about the signing until this morning.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 09:55 AM) I never said KW should be fired for not getting Fuku (it's the rest of the offseason and last year and a half which is troublnig). I never thought he'd get him, and it appears that there wouldn't have been a match even if we did offer the most money. I think some of the facts that Levine states might not be accurate, that's all I'm saying. You promised to tell us after he signed what you were told about Fukudome. So let's have at it...

You're the GM. Firesale is the plan.
iamshack replied to Chombi's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 01:27 AM) Our organization is so pathetic, we don't even have the tools to firesale. But we'd be wise to trade Konerko, Thome, Dye, Crede, hope Contreras starts hot and trade him in season, and take back the epically awful Linebrink signing. I'd tell you some rumored deals, but that's too many names to do that for. Ok, I absolutely disagree with you. We have plenty of tools to have a magnnificent firesale right now. We could basically rebuild the entire team by having a firesale. Vazquez has got to have a lot of value right now. Then you have Buehrle (assuming he would wave his NTC), Konerko, Dye, Thome, Cabrera and Jenks. That's SEVEN nice pieces to move. Look at some of the rumors going around surrounding Tejada, Roberts and Bedard. The Orioles are looking at being able to nearly rebuild their entire team by trading three players. I think we could do the same with our seven. Vazquez and Konerko to the Dodgers for Kemp/Loney/Hu. Buehrle to the Cardinals for Rasmus/Bryan Anderson/Chris Perez. Jenks to the Yankees for Ian Kennedy and Austin Jackson. Thome, Crede and Cabrera to the Angels for Brandon Wood and Ervin Santana. 1. Chin Lung Hu/ss 2. Matt Kemp/CF 3. James Loney/1b 4. Jermaine Dye/RF 5. Josh Fields/DH 6. Brandon Wood/3b 7. Carlos Quentin/LF 8. Bryan Anderson/AJ/C 9. Danny Richar/2b 1. Contreras 2. Danks 3. Ervin Santana 4. Floyd 5. Gonzalez/Kennedy This is just all in fun, obviously... -
Levine just stated that the Rangers made the best offer at over $50 million, while the Sox and Cubs both came in at 4/$48 million. Apparently, Fukudome wanted to play RF. Out of respect for Jermaine Dye, he did not want to cause Jermaine to play a different position on account of him. Basically, it sounds as if he did not want to play CF for us. Another factor was that he wanted to be the first Japanese player to play for the Cubs. Thus, he requested uniform #1.

QUOTE(Chombi @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 04:26 PM) Just saw the little Rosenthal mentioning of how the Orioles may try to package both of them and how it'd make sense for the Dodgers. Guessing that's where you saw it but idk. It's interesting, that's for sure. If they can steal 4-6 guys from the Dodgers it'd be a much better return than the Marlins got IMO. I'd assume Kershaw, Kemp, Billingsley or Broxton, plus more...Yikes. I'd love that deal. Actually, I read it from someone who claims to have an "inside source." Something along the lines of Bedard/Tejada and possibly Jay Payton for some package of their top prospects. Kemp and Kershaw can not both be in the deal, but a package can be built around either or, I believe is what is being said. Also, the Orioles would have to take Pierre back. And as for their deals with Roberts and the Cubs, supposedly the Cubs are pushing Prior on them along with Pie...but who knows, the Cubs are hoping Fukudome makes up his mind in the next 24 hours so they know whether they can deal Pie or not.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 01:02 PM) Just an FYI, the Sox have not been linked to nor have shown any interest in... a. Erik Bedard Pretty sure Bedard and Tejada will both get moved to the Dodgers, possibly tonight or tomorrow sometime.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 12:04 PM) What could we give Cinci? Well, depending on whether or not they make the trade for Bedard, and he is NOT included in it, they may want someone to replace what they just moved...(Encarnacion-3b?; Votto-1b?; Pitching spects?).
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) Who knows, KW might look at Pierre's contract, and come to the assumption that it's not bad in comparison to what other CF are now getting. We all know Ozzie LOVES Pierre, so let's hope he's not coming here. Well, we all know Owens is Pierre at a fraction of the price. So let's all hope that he's smart enough to bypass him...
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 11:38 AM) He'd be going from playing in two of the best hitting parks to the worst. I look forward to seeing him against Jake Peavy 6 times a season. Right now, I have a feeling though that Juan Pierre might be our CF next season. If you've got that feeling, surely you must have a feeling that some actual worthwhile piece is coming back in exchange for eating that salary, right? Please?

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 10:30 AM) Which I totally agree with....so don't waste money on a veteran and start going young. He's honestly got to sit down with JR sometime soon, whether it be now, at the ASB, or after this season, and say "look, we've got to either go balls to the wall here and trade every asset we've got to field a team that can actually win against the Boston's, the Yankees', the Indians and Tigers NOW, or we've got to trade the veterans we have now so we can acquire the young players necessary to win against them in 3-4 years. I'm sure they've had conversations such as this recently...but I'll bet it was a half-assed one. They need to honestly sit down, look at EVERYTHING- the economics, the farm, the contracts, and either crap or get off the pot. Because after missing out on Hunter and MCab, we are just sitting on the pot right now.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 11:23 AM) Ptatc, I agree he will be ripped either way. Good thing he doesn't care and knows it comes with the territory. His agent believes he can get five years so that's the story, he wants five years. There will probably be certain "out" clauses, i.e. back to Japan, if things turn sour from either side. Sooner or later though, the White Sox will have to take a risk on a free agent and pay up. Whether it's this guy or not, there are no sure things. If the Sox want to play with the big boys, and they say they do, they'll have to act the part. The economics are part of the game. I honestly think Fukudome came into this thing wanting 3 years because he didn't expect he could get this much annually. He figured he'd have to prove himself and then cash in more in a few years. Now that the bidding price has reached such heights, he probably figures that he may as well get the guaranteed money while he can, just in case he doesn't prove himself. I'm not sure you want to go 5 years on a guy that's never played mlb before. I think it's probably a pretty safe bet that he doesn't bust, but I think 4/$48 or 4/$52 is as high as I'd go. If that's not enough, let him go to Wrigley. As for Rowand, let him sign with the Giants. There no use in spending money just to spend it. If we can't get the player(s) we want under the terms we deem necessary to field a competitive ballclub, then we have to go young and see what we ultimately have. However, then we have 4-5 elephants in the room- Buehrle, Vazquez, Konerko, Dye, OCab...

Sox looking at Fukudome, Bay, not Rowand
iamshack replied to beck72's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 9, 2007 -> 10:47 PM) Seems as if the Pirates brass are after some good young pitching. Would you offer say Gio, Lucy and Quentin for Bay? No. We don't have enough minor league talent to be "overpaying" for talent right now. We bought low on Quentin, and if all goes well, he might sometime approach the type of numbers Bay has put up. I'd like to wait and see how he looks instead of including him in a deal along with Gio for Bay. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 9, 2007 -> 03:39 PM) I keep reading that Fuk wants a 3 year deal, no more, no less so he can hit free agency again before his 35th birthday. So if that is true it'll just come down to who guarantees him the most money, years won't be a deciding factor unlike the other free agent outfielders. And I keep seeing that posted, but not really referred to in other places. If that is the case, then I guess 3/$40m would be as high as I would go.
-
I would offer 4/$52m. If that doesn't bring him here, than so be it. But we have to make a reasonable play for him, in my mind. He matches our needs probably more than any FA that was available.
-
I figured we should start a new thread for Fukudome considering he has made his decision to come to the US and now is choosing between mlb teams. Trey Hillman, manager of the Royals and just recently a manager in the Nippon League has stated that in the right ballpark, Fukudome could play center, not necessarily as a "long-term fix," but some until something better came along. With that said, is Fukudome a guy we can afford to bring in at around 4/$52m or can we only outlay such a contract to a "pure" centerfielder? If we did sign Fukudome and put him in center for the time being, along with Dye and Owens/Quentin, would we need to find another center fielder next offseason? What does everyone think? Also, here is Chris De Luca's article from this morning: http://www.suntimes.com/sports/deluca/6879...eluca09.article

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 04:35 PM) But then again Buerhle was as awful the second half of 2006 as Willis was at anytime during 2007, and I'm sure everyone is happy the White Sox gave him $56 million. The thing about Willis is even if his ERA is 5.00, he's going to give you 200 innings and that will save your bullpen especially if he's a #5 starter. The White Sox right now have to count on Floyd and Danks to pick up a ton of innings Garland ate up. It will take its toll on the bullpen if they can't show they can pitch a lot more efficiently in 2008. 200 innings of what? I'm sure a few of our guys could give us 200 innings as well. Just depends on how effective you want those to be. At this point, I'm not sure if Dontrelle giving them 200 innings would be a good thing or a bad thing for them....

Gagne close to signing with the Brew Crew
iamshack replied to EvilJester99's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2007 -> 05:47 PM) Probably a good deal; he may be more effective than Cordero next year without the long-term commitment and he's cheaper too. Why is that a good deal? Because he will take over the "closer" role? $10 million? For about 65-70 innings? Ridiculous that a team with the financial constraints of the Brewers would spend that on Gagne... Too bad they couldn't work out a deal with the White Sox....Jenks for Weeks? -
QUOTE(heirdog @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 07:07 PM) I wasn't commenting on the untouchable part. I was only commenting on the part you said, "not even worth discussing, etc. etc." But you could have said untouchable about a bunch of guys that have been traded so if you want to enlighten me on something that I don't know about an "untouchable" young player, then go ahead. Well it's certainly nothing earth-shattering. It's the simple fact that Angelos is Greek. So is Markakis. As sick as that sounds, that's all there is to it.
