  1. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:57 PM) In an ideal world the Sox could get both plus Figgins (that is if the Angels are depserate). I don't think they are, but that isn't to say the White Sox can't try to offer up other things to get the Angels to deal Figgins (I don't know if they would though). However, I agree with you, Kochman and a pitching prospect (Adenhart) would be a nice starting point. But how does that help us? By the time we have a solid enough team to compete in this division, we will have to pay Kotchman what Konerko is making now, and Figgins will be gone. I think it may be time to acquire as many mlb-ready spects and hope this thing comes together in 3-4 years. I guess I would ask for Kendrick and Sean Rodriguez. In the meantime, you'd have to patch a 1b together somehow. I just know that if you need to get Kotchman back, you aren't getting much else of any value along with him. I'd ask for the two above, and try to find a young 1b somewhere for a bit cheaper.
  2. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) My hope is that Kenny turns, decides to just find a leadoff guy and than goes all out to add one to two young starting pitchers that he likes (he can also swing Paulie for a bevy of solid young position players). Hell, with the Angels losing out on Cabrera and Johan it could very well mean that they would pay a bit heftier price for Konerko (although Hunter's bat may be all the Angels GM thought they needed, but personally speaking, I think they could use legit protection for Vladdy). Funny that you say that, because as Cabrera was traded to Detroit, Tony Reagins mentioned to the LA beat writers that some interesting new possibilities had surfaced. Perhaps some talks regarding Konerko?
  3. Has anyone looked at the Brewer's system? What kind of guys are in their top 20 or so?
  4. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:50 PM) Has there been an update on our own announcement mentioned back on page 10? In all likelihood, there is no announcement.
  5. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) Compete now? Thats prob the funniest thing ive ever heard. There was never a hope of us competing this year. Our only hope is to build on this young core and hopefully add a couple of impact players. But to expand on your point. Would this team be better next year WITH Danks, Fields, Possibly Gio and Floyd, and signing Andruw Jones in CF or Just Miguel Cabrera and 2 or 3 major holes in the rotation, and no 3B? (given the crede trade) I'll be nearly as happy if we sign Jones.
  6. QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:41 PM) Are you guys who are bashing KW over this really upset because you thought we were getting MC all along, or just because you got your hopes up after the report that the "halls were buzzing" over a Sox deal? Excuse some of us for believing the report when we had been linked to him all along, and the guys writes that a White Sox source admitted we had an announcement forthcoming about Cabrera.
  7. Porcello is already the #14 prospect in baseball. Yuck.
  8. Check this link out....this is from nearly 8 hours ago... http://sportsreviewmagazine.com/index.php?...Itemid=88888928
  9. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:28 PM) It actually was part of the article that started this thread. I have a feeling that "announcement" has been canceled. I think you're right. Maybe the "announcement" is to announce we've extended ORLANDO Cabrera.
  10. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:26 PM) it was on the radio and someone said it was a blurb on espn hd, maybe we thought we had him, then the Tigers upped their initial deal to block it. I think we sign Andruw Jones in the next few hours though. I would take signing Jones over trading some ridiculous package for Cabrera, but if it was for the package mentioned...well, that would have been fine by me...
  11. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:24 PM) Gammons has it on the winter meetings blog on espn.com. Yep, just posted it. Jeesh, what a crazy 40 minutes that just was....something still doesn't smell right...
  12. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) Detroit is retarded to add in that many players. MCab is a good haul, Willis will get lit up in the AL central and they would have been better off keeping Miller instead of taking Dontrelle. I still think this is rumor fodder. It was said in ESPN that the White Sox have an announcement coming up tonight. Link?
  13. QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:18 PM) the deal won't be finalized until tonight, so that's impossible it's on mlb.com's homepage though http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...7&fext=.jsp Yeah, I saw that one. I guess I just don't buy this rumor anymore than the other. Mlb.com is reputable, but if the deal was all but finalized this afternoon, why would they plant an article about the White Sox at 5 pm? It doesn't add up...
  14. Can someone link me to where ESPN says the deal is done?
  15. QUOTE(NCsoxfan @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:55 PM) We assume "they" are "there" This guy could be sitting up in the news room making it up (unlikely, but possible) No, what I meant is the other teams are there. If the halls are buzzing, wouldn't the other teams know that?
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) OUCH! Kudos to the Tigers...and this honestly should make KW consider becoming a seller more than a buyer. The Sox are more f***ed now than they were 20 minutes ago. See this second part of that article: White Sox eyeing Andruw Jones The Chicago White Sox are interested in free-agent center fielder Andruw Jones. The addition of Jones, a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner, would further strengthen the White Sox -- who recently added 2007 American League Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Cabrera -- defensively and give the team five players -- Jones, Cabrera, Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko -- who averaged 89 RBIs and 250 total bases apiece in 2007.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:45 PM) This could very well be a plant...but at least it got me excited today. Saying the halls of the hotel were buzzing at that the team is close to an announcement seems a bit unethical if you are looking to plant misinformation. These people are there. At the hotel. How you could you make that up?
  18. Maybe we could reacquire him and then trade him to the Alomar family for Robbie
  19. From ESPN's Peter Gammons: The Marlins are serious about moving Miguel Cabrera to the Angels. Expect Florida to get Howie Kendrick, Nick Adenhart, Jeff Mathis and a prospect from L.A. for the third baseman.
  20. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:20 PM) From Rotoworld: So...who would the Sox target if Crede were to go to the Brewers? Any top 15 prospect in their system.
  21. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) I've never quite gotten a gauge; how good exactly is Matt Kemp? He reminds me of a young Maggs ...
  22. From ESPN's Amy Nelson: The Orioles and Dodgers may be close on a deal that will send left-hander Erik Bedard to Los Angeles, a baseball source said. The O's are in need of a center fielder and a closer who can play at the major league level, and the Dogders seem willing to part with outfielder Matt Kemp and reliever Jonathan Broxton, who could come in a close in lieu of Chris Ray, out for the year after Tommy John surgery. "They want Bedard bad," said the source.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 02:15 PM) What do the Sox have that Toronto would even be interested in? We'd probably have to do something along the lines of Fields/Gio/+ for Rios + taking Glaus and his contract.
  24. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Ahh yes, because statistical inferences can be made from 92 games. I'll also await your release of your theory that where a hitter bats in the order carries any predictive value or, further, that having a "leadoff hitter" makes a damn difference at all. Till then, keep believing useless s***. Whether you believe it or not, many baseball managers have created assigned "skill-sets" or roles for each position in the batting order. The manager then passes that on to the player hitting in that certain order. It's well documented in some cases, less documented in others. However, if OCab is being told to perform certain tasks in the second spot in the lineup, such as move the baserunners over, or doing this or that, he may indeed excel at such tasks. When he has batted first over the course of his career, he may have also been told to perform certain tasks- perhaps those which he is less successful in accomplishing. The difference in performing these different sets of tasks may indeed be what is indicated in the statistics- that he is better at performing the tasks associated with the two hitter than those associated with the leadoff hitter. I'm not claiming the underlying theory or philosophy of having these different skill or task sets is correct, just that they exist. And under those parameters, OCab may perform better in the two spot.
  25. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:31 PM) He's already improved the team significantly at LF and in the bullpen, let loose a bunch of junk (Erstad, Pods, Myers, Phillips, Cintron) and the winter meetings just started. And he's done all that without spending any of the money that had been set for Hunter, which he can still spend on CF or elsewhere. And you keep at this thing that he has mismanaged the whole situation. So far, as far as I can tell, he's made a number of very good moves, with more to come (we hope). What has he "mismanaged"? Because I don't consider things he hasn't yet finished to be "mismanagement". He's mismanaged things if his entire plan's success was contingent upon signing Hunter. Right now, the jury is still out on that one a bit. I think it's critical that he get some sort of impact player for CF. If he does so, I don't think he has mismanaged anything as much as he has taken a different path to reach the same destination. However, if we end up with Owens in CF, and no other impact players added, I think yes, he may have mismanaged things a bit.
