QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:46 AM) Rosenthal said today that the Guillen deal wouldn't cause them to stop pursuing Jones. They'd probably end up trading DeJesus along with a salary guy in order to clear some payroll. From ESPN: Andruw Jones' options have dwindled in the past week. First, the Nationals filled their center-field void by acquiring Lastings Milledge in a trade with the Mets. Then, the Royals signed Jose Guillen to play right, making it likely that they'll just keep David DeJesus and Joey Gathright as their center-field combination. Right now, the Dodgers and Giants look like the best fits for Jones, but only at the right price. One baseball official who knows Jones said the outfielder would prefer to stay in the National League. "Comfort is important to Andruw, and he's comfortable in the National League," the official said.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 12:37 PM) The 24 year old 2nd baseman who will be arb eligible in a few years (when they already have Uggla), or the 20 year old CF where they start Amezaga last season? You didn't state that Maybin was better for the Marlins than anyone in the Angels proposition. You stated Maybin was better than anyone in the Maybin proposition. I respectfully disagree.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 12:09 PM) There's going to be a lot more involved than just Maybin and Miller, if this trade happens. I think it would be a great trade for the Marlins, as those two guys are better than anyone in the Angels proposition. I'm going to disagree with you on that. I think Kendrick is more well-regarded currently than Maybin.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:43 AM) ESPN update on Bedard sweepstakes... If Mets are one club, who are the other three? Good question. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:34 AM) Kansas City for Jones No one knows but Dayton Moore, but everything I've read seems to indicate that the reason Guillen was acquired was because Jones was out of their price range. One thing that makes me feel a bit better about Jones (or possibly worse in that we may be dismissing him in error) is that Dayton Moore, who watched Jones' entire career in Atlanta, was very interested in signing him. One would think he would know more about Andruw than most.

QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:28 AM) when i heard the dodgers had offered 16 mil/yr for 2 years, i thought we might have a chance. i thought maybe hahn could do the negotiating with boras. jones at 32/2 is better than having hunter at 18/5. but yea, apparently its going to take a lot more than 32/2 and ur right, we wont be signing boras' clients. Well, what needs to happen is for Rowand to sign with the Dodgers. That would be the perfect scenario in that it eliminates most of the big players' need for a CF (unless of course the Yankees trade Cabrera to Minny or the BoSox deal both Crisp and Ellsbury (which was reported last night as a possibility). However, if the Dodgers were to sign Rowand, and the Red Sox acquire Santana using just one of Crisp/Ellsbury, then where is Jones really going to go? Here or SF? That would limit his options a bit and possibly bring him back into our range....

QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:46 PM) could this be the genesis of the Konerko to the D'Backs scenario. We trade for Cabrera then trade Konerko to the D'Backs to clear the money. Or the opposite. We clear the money and get players back to add to a few of our own to acquire MCab.

Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips

I think both Ozzie and Kenny are changing some of their earlier philosophies. Which is good. Baseball is a changing game. And it requires one to change with it. -

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 09:33 PM) Why would he acquire him as a platoon guy? I am actually a little gun shy to post stats because my experience is that people like to twist the stats around. But anyways, in 2007 Quentin was awful vs. lefthanders. Yes it was an odd year for him due to injury. But why would they acquire a potentially high impact guy and tell him he's going to platoon? To get Jerry Owens in the lineup? That doesn't make sense to me and I don't think they like Owens all that much. My guess is, they are far from done and this whole picture will clear up by end of January. I agree 100%. I think they may be trying to move Pauly prior to deciding where they want to go with the CF situation. Although I must add that I truly won't believe KW has the stones to deal Pauly until i see it. -

There is no way he is going to simply platoon. Even if they have that in mind for him now, he'll hit well enough so they'll have to play him. The Chicago media is so clueless. Reporters calling this a "minor trade." Little do they realize we just acquired an OF for the next 5 years. -
QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 09:01 PM) I think we have a much better shot at getting a guy like Bedard over Haren.... . KW has been high on Bedard for like 4 seasons now.. Supposedly the O's want 4 mlb-ready players for Bedard. Teams are saying they are asking for more than the Twins are for Santana.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 08:26 PM) TIFWIW (from MetsBlog: I think McPhail is really drumming up interest in him. I am also reading some message board material that says the Dodgers and Orioles are talking about a huge deal that includes both Tejada and Bedard going to LA.

QUOTE(jenks45monster @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) Some experts are saying that the 32 mil he was offered from the Dogders is "a little light" and should be raised to 2 yrs. for 38 mil. This whole idea of him being paid that much is getting way out of hand. Well, to be fair, that wasn't an expert who said that. It was Tim Dierkes from mlbtraderumors.com. An avid and knowledgeable fan, yes, but not an expert. Of course, who the hell is an expert anyways?

QUOTE(NCsoxfan @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 05:02 PM) I see the Sox taking a gamble on a veteran SP coming off of an injury. I think there is too much left to do to gut the farm system on a guy like this... Well, part of my premise was that you wouldn't need to gut your system to get a guy like this....sort of like the Quentin deal...someone whose stock has fallen a bit...but you're right, knowing Beane, he would ask for Fields and Gio or something like that...
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) I can imagine that there would be other teams willing to offer up more if they put him on the market, just for the gamble. But I think for that same reason, they're likely to hold onto him, because even if they only have a 1/10 shot of a full season from them, if they get it, his value goes back up if he performs. Yeah, I figured it would be silly to trade him at this point as well, considering you aren't going to get what you once could for him...but perhaps Beane is a little concerned considering what has happened to the Cubs regarding Prior. For what it's worth, Jayson Stark referred to Harden as "perpetually available."
-
Not sure what Beane really wants for him, but it has to be significantly less than he is asking for Haren or Blanton. Wondering, depending on the price, if KW might be interesred in taking a shot at getting Harden. Would be very interesting if the price wasn't too prohibitive...

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 01:01 PM) Is it worth noting that his BABIP was insanely high during a large portion of his second callup? Is this not directly related to his speed? -

QUOTE(bmags @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 12:12 PM) i'm seeing good things on him from like...2005. He has to be like 25 years old at this point. I've got absolutely no problem with this sort of deal if it is indeed true. Quentin is the sort of high-ceiling young position player we need right now, even if it is at the expense of a talented player lower down in our system. KW is addressing a dire need without dealing away either Fields/Gio/DLS, which you have got to be happy about. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 11:56 PM) And Chris Ray and Nick Markakis. They all have something in common: they're all young, inexpensive in their own way and will not be traded anytime soon. Well, supposedly the O's looked into moving Roberts last year, had a deal done, and Angelos nixed it. As for Ray, there have been many talks about him. Don't be shocked to see him dealt as McPhail tries to restock the system using Bedard/Tejada/Ray as ammo.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 11:29 PM) A lucky team. Jmho, but the first thing to worry about is getting there. I was hoping he'd go to the Dodgers, but a weaker division is more important. Well I would agree, the first step is definitely getting there. But from what we've seen from both Beckett and Santana....it would take a lot more than luck to beat them. I'd much rather see the Yankees get him than the Red Sox. The Red Sox offer meant they were getting him without having to give up either of their top two prospects. The Yankees offer means they are basically giving up their top prospect.
-
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 10:27 PM) Oh, I'm not comparing him to Santana. I'm just hoping the Twins get the crappiest package possible. From our perspective, I think I like the Lester package more than the Hughes one. Yeah, but who is going to beat the Red Sox with Santana/Beckett/Dice K/Buchholz/Schilling? Especially in the postseason?
-
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 08:49 PM) Totally unrelated to anything- I noticed that 5 former Sox 2nd basemen are free agents. That's wacky. Let's sign all of them and have a reuinion. Maybe Juice Cruz is available again?
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 08:15 PM) As good as Hughes may be, Santana probably is the best pitcher in baseball. Money seems to be no object for the Yankees, I really don't know why they even hesitate. I think the Twins planted the Santana to Boston is a done deal rumor to get the Yankees to increase their offer. I actually like Coco Crisp. I hope KW gets him and another OF, hopefully Fukodome. Wow, we agree! I have no problem with Coco being our left fielder, as long as we don't need to surrender too much in trade. I am still holding out for my OF of Crisp and Jones...
