Your new Supreme Court nominee is....
Jenksismyhero replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Filibuster
Jesus this is a terrible take. Complaining about the politicization of the issue is not ignoring the victim. And yes, it's highly fucking suspect that she happens to come out days before his confirmation vote when he was selected by Trump as his SC nominee 2.5 months ago. You and I both know some congressional aide somewhere found her, interviewed her and then sat on this until this precise moment to bring it up because of the political points it would win, not because they wanted justice. You can point all that out without "blaming the victim." I'm not really sure when the pendulum swung so far that now instead of presuming innocence we presume guilt. Every woman is to be believed 100% of the time. They are accusations. People can, and do, make shit up. That doesn't mean you discount every accusation, but it also doesn't mean you accept it as 100% truth. Questioning this woman (and the people helping her) and the timing of her accusations =/= attacking her. -

he's been great the 2nd half but his wr's aren't helping. the big fumble and whoever just dropped that great pass -
I debated buying it but I feel like having watched 3-4 Woodward interviews and reading some of the stories on the book's revelations, I've already seen/read most of whats in the book.

Agreed. I think it was a minor bone bruise or knee sprain and the Packers are just using this to their advantage while also hyping up Rodgers' legacy (though the latter part is more on the media and fans taking the story and running with it). If he tore anything there's 0% chance he plays another minute in that Bears game. No way the Packers are going to jeopardize the next 4-5 years for one measly win over the Bears. -

I don't want to overreact in a negative way because it was the best half of football i've seen from the Bears in years, HOWEVA, let's take a look at what actually happened: (1) a really good first drive on the first drive of the season for a unit that didn't play in the preseason. A LOT of that success was due to the fact that GB had no idea WTF the Bears were doing. After about two drives all of that went away and the offense became the same average-or-worse offense from last year. (2) While Mack is an all-NFL talent, it's a lucky break that he stifled a GB drive (in which they marched down the field and were nearing a TD) with that strip fumble, and then the interception for a TD. (3) GB played that half without Rodgers for a big chunk of it. -

I'm sure that was by design so that they could win the time of possession battle and keep the ball out of Rodgers' hands. -

Try 25-30. The problem for me is that those other guys clearly have the tools to sling it around the field. They may be off one game, they may have some issues reading defenses or calling audibles or whatever to get the best matchup, but at the end of the day they have other worldly arm talent to march you down the field and win a ball game for you. Sometimes that talent burns you (Cutler) but odds are that type of QB is going to be more successful than the dink and dunk game manager. Through about 13 games now Trubisky looks like Grossman before he hurt his ankle - elusive, decent speed, good around the pocket, can make one or two throws but otherwise average, average, average. I had zero confidence that he was going to get the Bears into field goal range because he just can't make the throws when the pressure is on. Totally agree. This is the same Bears team we've seen for decades - solid defense, solid run game, shitty QB = 6 to 9 wins, no playoffs. -
The sec of state or chief of staff can't impeach anyone. At best they can try to persuade someone how awful Trump is but it's up to the GOP members in Congress to get their act together. I think if these guys are completely fine being quoted in Woodward's book, they don't really have any issue keeping their disdain/embarrassment for Trump private.
-
Well sure, the GOP stuff is unexplainable/inexcusable. But these admn officials and dept heads quitting won't change or solve anything. It sounds like they're doing whats best for the country in spite of Trump's wishes and/or even direct orders. I mean it's crazy that someone would take away a key document just so Trump doesn't see it and act on it. Wolff's book and this book seems to describe a situation where everyone in Washington knows what a disaster he is and they're all trying to figure out the best way to deal with it without destroying the country.
-
If you're preventing Trump from assassinating heads of state or unilaterally ending trade deals without thought, that's a good, admirable thing. If they all up and quit, the system would teeter on the edge. I think there are people in the admin and in government generally that are there for the right reasons and do want to serve their country but just happen to work for one of the worst leaders in our history.

Totally agree. I don't understand people against this. There is literally no downside other than cash. And who cares? it's not our money and the McCaskey's are swimming in it. The entire franchise is tied to Trubisky for the next 2-3 seasons regardless. If he sucks, they're not winning anything. They're not picking a QB with those picks. Best case they get two quality starters for a team with no QB, e.g., they'll still suck. Plus, above all else, this kind of move is exactly what we fans constantly scream for. We want teams to make trades and take risks and do SOMETHING. I'd rather the Bears (and the Bulls, Sox, etc) swing and miss than not swing at all. -
You know, there seems to be a lot of argument about the people working under Trump and how morally bankrupt they must be, but after reading that, good Lord. They should win medals of honor for their work keeping Trump from ruining everything.

Signing him long term to a deal that will be bigger than Donald just got. Bears D is gonna be legit for a few years. -
The wife and I started Ozark this week. Through 4 episodes it's really solid.

Comedy seems like one arena where you can literally let people decide whether he's accepted back or not. If people show up and pay to see him, well, that's on them. If not, that's the cost of what he did. I don't really buy that he has to do anything to earn it back. That all becomes fake anyway. Throw out a form apology letter, go to a "rehab" facility for a few weeks, make a few donations. Does that really change anything? Does he need to break down how/why he finally learned that masturbating in front of people is not OK? Those women will still get harassed. He'll still be the creepy dude in the comedian group.

I've seen a lot of stories today about Louis CK returning to perform stand up last night. Seems like a lot of people are upset about it. Did they expect a lifetime ban or something?

Such a load of shit. Money wins out over morality, everytime. Don't understand why schools aren't just honest about it. Clearly people don't care if their coach/AD are horrible human beings. -

My firm has/is litigating a number of child sex abuse cases here in Chicago. The shit is beyond disturbing once you get into the docs and the practices of the Church to protect these guys. And the way these guys prey on children is absolutely abhorrent. Brain washing young children to believe that the priest has a real connection to God, that he speaks to God, that God can tell them when he is upset, using the threat of sin, using the threat of telling parents about what the kid has done, etc. etc. These people need to be put away for life, but sadly the prison sentences for those that are criminally charged end up being pretty short and they're always at minimum security places. Luckily the law is changing, albeit slowly, to address repressed memories and the courts are now accepting it as something real so that statute of limitations issues aren't blocking legitimate cases. But there have been far too many people out there who had the courage to make claims and then were utterly screwed. The Keepers is a good mini-series on Netflix that deals with this issue in Baltimore (and it's one of the more fucked up examples of priest-abuse).

so who caved? -
Yeah, I've been told that the GOP is dying for 15-20 years now and it hasn't. Certainly socially we are becoming more progressive, but the #1 driver of voting is the economy and your pocket book and when push comes to shove people will vote for their own self-interest. But like the Dem party generally, keep believing that the majority of people want socialist policies and lose elections because of it. Frankly, it's pathetic that liberals don't own the federal government. The GOP has been a shit show for the last decade. If the GOP dies it will be because of self-inflicted wounds, not a change in the electorate.
