  1. Agree 100%. It seems many here fall in love the big name guys that are now a shell of their former selves. 2019 Michael Wacha is not the same as 2017 Michael Wacha, not even close. Meanwhile, Nova’s fWAR over the past 4 seasons is pretty damn consistent: 2.3, 2.1, 1.2, 1.6 (so far). That consistency is worth something even if the upside is limited.
  2. Has Hahn ever had success with starting pitchers signed to pillow contracts? The 4 guys you mention in the second grouping have been horrible/injured this year. You say smoke and mirrors with Nova because he has a low strikeout rate but it doesn’t matter that the other 4 have a higher strikeout rate when their walk rate is double. I really have no interest in seeing older versions of Covey and Banuelos next year.
  3. Now at 1.6 fWAR for the season. Higher than Arrieta, Samardzija, Leake, Aaron Sanchez, Darvish, Porcello, Davies to name a few. If those guys are getting starts on contending teams, I see no problem with Nova as a #5/#6 next year if the price is right.
  4. Ivan Nova is 6-2 since the start of last month.
  5. Good things happen when you don’t walk guys and throw a lot of ground balls.
  6. You might not want to check Manny’s clutch stats this season. His high leverage splits are worse than Abreu’s ?
  7. Quite frankly, he’s still got some work to do before he hits 3 fWAR for this season. Just wait until his defense starts to erode in a few years.
  8. Because he’s the most overrated player in baseball on this site imo
  9. Because I believe he has more trade value than Lopez as things currently stand.
  10. Musgrove has 1 year less control than Lopez. Suddenly, everyone is a huge fan of Lopez? Lol. Had me fooled. Musgrove is so mediocre that he has the same fWAR as Manny Machado this year. What does that make Machado?
  11. And Lopez has dominated the AL? I thought people here love peripherals? Musgrove has a career FIP of 4.01 and xFIP of 4.13.
  12. Would you be upset with Bumgarner and Nova signings and then a trade for a guy like Musgrove (Lopez + Walker)? That’s what I’d like to see. Giolito, Bumgarner, Musgrove, Cease, Nova, and eventually Kopech/Rodon/Dunning.
  13. And that’s why I believe 1 year ~$6M likely gets it done. That’s cheap for an innings eater with a 4.50 - 4.80 ERA.
  14. They have 3 spots locked down, 4 if you count Kopech. They need two more starters at least. And that’s if you believe in Lopez as a starter (I do but I know many don’t). If they splurge on a starter from the Tier 2 group, which are the top guys after Cole, I’d be fine with Nova as the other veteran signing if they use the remaining saved money to upgrade the bullpen and RF.
  15. Oh come on. You don’t want to see more Covey, Banuelos, Santiago, Detweiler, despaigne and any other AAA garbage out there next year?
  16. Won’t the Sox be best served with 6 starting pitchers next year if Kopech is in the rotation (which I am assuming he will be at some point before Memorial Day)? Won’t Kopech and Cease both be on innings limits for the season?
  17. Yep and this is exactly what the pro Nova fans were saying. No one was saying rush and lock this guy up to an extension because he’s some sort of great pitcher. But at the right price, he’s a solid #5/#6 starter next year and that’s exactly what this team needs - starting pitching depth.
  18. They really need to break camp with at least 5 capable starting pitchers, excluding Kopech and Rodon. If those guys make it back healthy and provide more than 100 innings next season consider it a bonus. So right now only 3 guys are really penciled in. I’d welcome bringing Nova back as a reliable #5 and then sign one of the premier FA starting pitchers. Ideally, then I’d also love to see them package Lopez and Steele Walker for someone like Joe Musgrove.
  19. 160+ innings with an ERA below 5 is definitely worth something in today’s game. And for those thinking it should be easy to plug anyone into the #5 spot (AAA filler, DFA candidates, or similar) and expect this type of production, well I guess they haven’t watched much White Sox baseball the last few years.
  20. He’s 8-9 for a team 13 games below .500 so technically he can win. As a #5/#6 type starter, he’d be fine imo since he’s thrown 160+ innings in each of the last 4 seasons and seems capable of posting an ERA below 5 (which has been difficult for many Sox pitchers in recent years).
  21. I hope but even Kopech is a question mark coming off surgery. Can’t really pencil a guy in for 150+ innings in his first year back from TJS.
  22. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/08/white-sox-rumors-ivan-nova-return.html if he’d be willing to take a 1 year deal at $6M or $7M, I say why not. Going to need at least 6 capable starting pitchers next year and the only locks at this time are Giolito, Lopez, and Cease.
  23. Yea, this article sums it up pretty well. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/ny-sports-dodgers-fbi-investigation-machado-madden-20181020-story.html%3foutputType=amp “This is a guy who’s playing for a $300 million contract in free agency this winter. Knowing this, knowing this blatant disrespect for the game and the disdain with which so many other players in the game have for him, you have to ask yourself: “What owner in their right mind would make that kind of longterm financial commitment to Machado? If this is the way he acts before he gets the money, what’s he going to be like after he gets his lifetime security? Good luck. And yet someone will still be blinded by his abilities – just like the Seattle Mariners in 2013 when they gave Robinson Cano (who also had a propensity for not running out ground balls) 10 years/$240 million. How’s that working out? Yankee fans can only hope it won’t be Hal Steinbrenner forgetting the lesson of Alex Rodriguez. Let the buyer beware.”
