  1. Multiple wild card teams won the World Series despite long odds. Last season in the NFL the Rams had to play an extra playoff round (Bengals too) because they weren’t a top 2 seed. I realize the odds are worse if you’re not but it’s more important to get hot at the right time than be well rested.
  2. It’s baseball. Get in the playoffs, get hot at the right time and anyone can beat anyone else over a small sample size. The Braves were 50-54 and 6 GB this time last year. I’m sure their fans were having the same debate. I bet they’re glad they added At the deadline.
  3. Does that trade even make the Dodgers that much better this season? I’m not sure it does.
  4. Out of curiosity, what was the best potential offer floated in this hypothetical?
  5. To make it somewhat feasible from a financial perspective, the Sox would have to include a couple MLB players like Giolito and Eloy along with prospects. Can’t see it working from the money side with the Sox sending prospects only.
  6. I think it’s close. Of course a lot depends on how you value Giolito. If you think he’s this season’s version moving forward it’s far different than the version coming into the season.
  7. Giolito + Montgomery + Colas + Sosa + Cespedes for Ohtani. Who says no?
  8. I’d rather have Tyler Naquin than Joey Gallo for the rest of this season. That’s how highly I think of Gallo.
  9. Lambert is a stud. When’s the last time he allowed a run?
  10. Let’s put a bow on this one and head into the weekend 2 games back of the division lead. Everyone still want to sell before the deadline?!?
  11. It’s not that simple but we’ll save that for another thread
  12. Oh yea, no doubt Padres killed that trade at the time. But 12 years from now when his contract ends will it even matter? Will the Padres have won a WS before the Sox? Or even worse, will Tatis Jr. contract actually prevent the Padres from winning a WS because he can’t stay on the field and they’ve reached their payroll limit in large part because of his contract?
  13. I won’t debate that and this also remains one of the biggest flaws with MLB compared to other major sports
  14. The two go hand in hand. Hard to win a WS if you aren’t fiscally responsible (unless you’re the Mets, Yankees or Dodgers of course).
  15. That Tatis contract is not something I would want any part of. Far too risky for me. It’s basically fair value if he stays on the field 125 games/year and continues to perform as he has when healthy. If either health or performance deteriorate over the next few years, it’s going to look like an albatross of a contract.
  16. My point is it was more luck than skill on the Padres’ part. Regardless, they’re now on the hook for the 4th largest contract in MLB for a player that can’t stay on the field so I guess the joke’s on them.
  17. His signing was prior to the international signing bonus limits
  18. If Tatis was such a slam dunk, why didn’t Preller just sign him initially? It only cost $700k to sign him. The irony of that whole deal is that the Padres are now on the hook for possibly one of the worst contracts in MLB history if he can’t stay on the field (Tatis Jr. gets hurt more than Eloy). There’s a word for that: karma
