2022-23 NFL Season thread
JUSTgottaBELIEVE replied to bmags's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Was the 2021 Bengals roster ahead of the 2022 Bears roster? Yes or no? The Bengals drafted Burrow in 2020, the Bears drafted Fields in 2021. The Bears will be lucky to the the 2021 Bengals in 2025. -

There’s always a guy available if you’re either drafting high (which the bears will be for a few years) or willing to trade for an established QB when the time is right. There’s no reason to reach for a QB in the draft and deplete draft capital unless the rest of your roster is already in really good shape. Bears would be in a better position in the future if they didn’t trade all those picks for Fields and simply waited to draft a QB in 2023 or 2024. Now they’ve already burned two years of a QB’s rookie contract and have more holes to fill because they traded away picks to draft him. Why does everyone think you need a “franchise” QB to win? What is that anyways? Is Brock Purdy a franchise QB? 49ers are the best team in the NFC with a 7th round rookie QB. I doubt Jalen Hurts is anything special outside of a loaded Eagles roster. Stafford won a Super Bowl last year and is nothing special. -

They’ve drafted all of their top players as far as I’m aware. -

Exactly my point. Why start the clock on a young QB when the rest of the team is in shambles? Not only do you risk destroying that young QB in the process but you also waste valuable years of his rookie contract dwelling in the cellar. -

Again, how does this Bears roster look in year 2 of Justin Fields compared to year 2 of Burrow. If the Bengals roster sucked so bad and simply adding Burrow made that much of a difference why hasn’t Fields had the same success with the Bears? -

Bengals had been building and drafting high for years before Burrow. It’s a big reason why Burrow was able to make the Super Bowl in year 2. Does the bears roster look anything near the 2021 Bengals roster in Justin Fields’ year 2? -

Neither were drafted in the past two decades though -

Someone give me an example where a total rebuild that was kickstarted by drafting a QB actually resulted in team success. Seems to me that most teams trying this are teams like the Texans, Jaguars, and Cardinals. Heck, even the Bengals built out much of their roster before they drafted Burrow. I don’t know, it seems drafting the QB first results in outcomes like David Carr, Blake Bortles, and Kyler Murray more often than they do Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, and Aaron Rodgers. -

Boy, you’re really reaching there! The Sox didn’t trade a high second round pick for Diekman. And yes, Cueto was every bit as good as Rodon thru July last season. Obviously he faded in September but it’s not like either of those things would have made a difference in the 2022 outcome for the White Sox. What’s your point? -

It was a stupid cherry picked list and it’s a stupid argument. Anyways, the Bears were dumb to draft a QB first when the rest of the roster was hot garbage. When has that approach resulted in a Super Bowl over the past two decades? Build the roster out first, then draft or trade for the QB. They will have another few years of top 10 picks anyways and plenty of opportunities to draft or trade for a QB. -

Williams will be good but he’s returning from a major injury and has hardly played this season. Hockenson played less than half a season with the Lions. If Chark is better than Claypool, the bears front office made one of the worst trades in franchise history by giving up a high second round pick for a bottom tier #2 receiver. -

Why didn’t you include them in your list? They had a similar number of pass attempts in college as Justin Fields. -

Exactly. Someone said the Lions aren’t going anywhere with Goff. Seriously? If the rest of the team is loaded, which it appears to be trending that way, they can absolutely win a SB with Goff. Guys like Flacco, Foles, Eli Manning, and Stafford have won Super Bowls. I mean come on. -

Williams has been injured most the year. Chark had one good season like 3 years ago. Hockenson was traded to the Vikings. -

Lions can absolutely win a SB with Goff. He’s already played in one and is better now than he was then. Everyone talks about the Bears crappy WR corps. Who do the Lions have outside of 2021 fourth round pick St. Brown? -

Carlos Correa is a Twin - 6 yrs $200M

Yep, Escobar is definitely the odd man out and with $10M guaranteed remaining on his contract I think they’ll move him rather than keep him as a utility guy. Good fit for the Sox if they can snag a prospect like Baty too, who is also blocked. -

Hendriks for Baty and Escobar. Who says no? -
Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M

I don’t disagree but, on paper, I see this collection of transactions as a lateral move. Don’t think they got better. So that means the carry overs from last season have to improve significantly to make a real run at this thing. I still think the roster severely lacks depth. They’re a couple injuries away from guys like burger, garcia, etc getting significant playing time again. -

I’m surprised they signed him but also fully expect this now means Liam is traded. The bigger concern is whether the team is any better after a Liam trade than it was at the end of last year? Added: Benintendi, Clevinger, Reyes, return from Hendriks trade Subtracted: Abreu, Cueto, Pollock, Harrison, Engel, Hendriks -

It’s been widely reported that they have a hard cap at $180M. What makes you think they will exceed this other than wishful thinking?
