I just hope that this scenario doesn’t play out...he genuinely doesn’t want to play here, eventually takes the most money offered, have it be the Sox and the Sox suck for the next year or two and he become a toxic influence on the team because he is playing where he isn’t happy. Doom and mfn doom, I know. My seasonal affective disorder is going full force right now.

I’m a patient man. I can wait for this but at a certain point the distraction needs to end and the team has to move on in my opinion. I would have the start of the season as the deadline. After that I wouldn’t enagage in any more discussions. You take it or leave it. Not because you want to be a hard ass or because of pride but because if a player hasn’t decided at that point then his motivation is in question and it’s clear he didn’t really want to be with organization. If he was motivated to play the game and be committed to your team he would have made sure the two sides were engaged as much as possible to get something done.

I’m not as against opt outs like others. The Sox were possibly willing to trade for him last year just to get him in the org and comfortable. If you had to do that now it wouldn’t be ideal but at least you give yourself a good shot and he doesn’t go to another team where you don’t get any shot at all. If Manny really preferred early opt outs and thought he would get it he would have a bigger market out there.

If the Sox are really Mannys second choice that kind of sucks. The feeling that we have had, if I am reading this right, is that the Sox have been in the lead for a while but Manny just trying to egg the right money from us. His first choice was the Yankees but that ship sailed. Out of the other teams left to be seriously considered would be the Phils, Pads?, mystery team?,....and we are second to those options right now? ?

Being a safety net isn’t necessarily a good thing. Kind of like a safety net girlfriend or boyfriend, as soon as something comes slightly better you bail on the safety net.
