  3. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 08:42 AM) despite his event-ness... if Jerry Owens could get a .400 OBP and have at least some slugging..... i'd bench Thome and get Swisher lower in the lineup. Makes us faster, and Swisher can have Thome's power numbers (especially in the Cell) if he decides to have the mindset he had in 06. not something to worry about, though, b/c Owens isnt that. You are underrating Thome's presence in the lineup and the talent that he still has. While overrating Swisher as a power hitter in a lineup.Swisher is so much more valuable the way we are using him now which has forced him to take a better approach at the plate.Iam not sure of his SO rate so far but it has to be far lower than his career numbers.
  4. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 06:55 AM) They should post a warning that these ranking are for amusement only. For over one hundred years they best ranking of a team can be found in the newspaper, it is called the standings. And last I checked, we're the top in the AL Central. At this point in the season, no other ranking really matters. So true, when I was younger I really cared about the rankings and what all the analysts would say about the sox and learned that none of it meant sh**.

  6. As Boers and Bernsy have said recently,Jim Thome at the plate is an event. He is a guy that you have to stop what you are doing to watch him because he has the potential to do something that will wow you, like last nights homerun. He is the only "event" in the Whitesox lineup, even though he isnt the best hitter.
  7. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 08:07 AM) That's the 2nd time I've been asked that. GPA stands for Gross Production Average. It's a stat used from the Hardball Times. A variation of OPS, but more accurate and easier to interpret. The exact formula is (OBP*1.8+SLG)/4, adjusted for ballpark factor. The scale of GPA is similar to BA: .200 is lousy, .265 is around average and .300 is a star. A simple formula for converting GPA to runs is PA*1.356*(GPA^1.77). For comparions sake, Uribe has a GPA of .168, Cabrera a GPA of .242, and Pierzynski a GPA of .304. Where is the ballpark factor adjustment? Is it in the 1.8 or the /4?And how do they come up with those numbers?
  8. QUOTE (daa84 @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 01:06 PM) its funny because in a gamethread about a week ago big bobby fell to the ground, and i was only watching on gameday,....fathom joked that an earthquake was felt in chicago....i replied "anymore on that?"...people naturally laughed at me because fathom made a joke, but i said i thought maybe the new madrid had gone off, because some geologists say its a ticking time bomb... til someone explained to me what happened during the game....kind of a bit of eerie forshadowing i suppose Dude I thought the same thing as soon as I heard the news on this.I read it as truth too when he made that joke.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) My brother's been around Longoria for the past year or so, and one thing he doesn't lack is confidence. Overcompensation for how he really feels about himself?
  10. A deal like this makes me think the kid might doubt himself a little bit.
  11. I was going to post about 10 minutes ago that Gavin was changing my mind about him,but that I shouldn't say anything because than he would turn bad.As I was logging on he gives up the 2 run dinger. Now Iam thinking of posting on Quentin changing my mind along with giving Crede a contract but I will just keep my mouth shut and logoff right away.
  12. I have been following soxtalk since it was soxtalk.net. or soxnet.net whatever the hell it was.To only have 900 something posts to show for it in 08' is pretty pitiful.

  16. Obviously most of us are Sox fans here but I know there is many posters who arent from Chicago. What are the teams in other sports that you have a passion for?I personally live and die with the Bears,Bulls,Hawks,Fire, and Illini football and basketball.Sure no surprises with my allegiances but what are yours?Do you follow any sports teams that maybe some of us would be surprised to know about?Maybe you have a favorite Lacrosse team,or a favorite Premier league soccer team,or maybe you are a deranged Packers fan,we should know about it.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 08:04 PM) Soriano got hurt doing his stupid hop. Sad to see that they'll miss Santana next week at Wrigley. I always wanted to see how he'd fare against the Cubs. That hop finally got him like Gramatica.

    Films Thread

StreetKings was a pretty good movie, sort of a throw back to the 90"s action movies.Hugh Laurie did prove that he has no range whatsoever as an actor,he was Gregory House playing a detective. His delivery of the lines were exactly the way House would have said them.
  22. I think we might have a better chance against a guy like Harden instead some guy we have never seen before.
  23. I forgot about him being tossed,I thought this was going to be a steroid suspension thread.
