  1. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) Luis Castillo = 2 draft picks (1 first rounder, 1 sandwich) Tadahito Iguchi = nothing Huge difference. The point wasn't to compare him to Iguchi, but to Dye considering how people are running off screaming in the night at the mere thought of parting with a single prospect for him. If being "a rental" is such a bad thing in regards to trading Dye, then how come the Twins were able to get anything for Castillo? (Disclaimer: I don't know anything about the players involved, they could be 30 year old AA players for all I know).
  2. QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 03:25 PM) It'll be interesting to see what Castillo brings. Can he be considered much better than Iguchi ? He's more expensive and has no power and can't run like he used to. You think they can get more than a Doobee ? And isn't he a rental as well?
  3. The Mets are going to trade two prospects for Luis Castillo. Isn't Castillo a rental? I know nothing of the two prospects, but it is interesting.
  4. Haha...now they are saying the Red Sox don't want to give up either Masterson or Delcarman. Tell Boston to go pound sand.
  5. QUOTE(southsida86 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 02:19 PM) Could someone post stats/scouting report on this Masterson kid. I'd like to know why Kenny likes this guy and not Hansen. I believe he is a sinker-baller pitcher, but does have a very high K-rate (usually not the case with sinkerballers). He is a big, tall kid. I don't want to say Brandon Webb, but Brandon Webb.
  6. It is thought the White Sox might then trade Pena. Hmmm, the plot thickens. Get Pena (he's not a rental) and deal him in a package to some shlump
  7. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) This deal doesn't exist, man. then keep Dye and let him play for us next year. If he leaves take the two picks and start rebuilding our wretched minor league system. Further, Pena will be gone in 2008 anyway and Delcarman will be 'just another guy' we wish was better than he is (see our current bullpen).
  8. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 02:16 PM) I'm really surprised the Angels aren't making a push for Dye. Despite their offensive outburst over the weekend, they need someone to protect Vlad in the lineup. Stoneman's going to have a lot to answer for if they come up short again this season. This is what gives me hope....While we are in here beating around the idea of Pena and whoever...KW may be working a deal right now with LAA or someone we haven't even considered. Deadline is still over 24 hrs away...no need to make a deal now.
  9. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 02:14 PM) masterson's been tearing it up in portland. Not only that, but Delcarman is certainly not stud pitcher. He has limited upside, is a destined bullpen guy, was beaten around in Boston last year, and did have a really nice stretch that has inflated his stats this year (think Aardsma). Delcarman would be 'just another guy' in the bullpen and is likely to be bashed around as was Massett, Mac, and Aardsma. Dude is far from over-powering. Although 'it's a rental' so we should bow down and thank Boston for doing this. *hope it dies on the vine*
  10. That information from Soxfest is interesting. If the Red Sox are willing to do Pena/whoever for Dye KNOWING that he is a rental, what about a deal with a team who thinks they may have a shot at resigning Dye?
  11. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 02:06 PM) THE SCORE JUST UPDATED THE RUMOR They said it's EITHER Justin Masterson or Manny Delcarmen along with Wily Mo. I like this even more. More than what? That is the best it's ever been.
  12. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 02:02 PM) Why would you want Hansen but not Delcarmen? Manny D has 80 innings of a 4.26 ERA that say he can, at the very least, be a competent backend-of-the-bullpen reliever. Hansen, OTOH, has 40 innings of Nick Masset numbers in the majors. I'd be happy with either Delcarmen or Masterson, but damn, it would be quite the coup for Kenny to pull off both. Simple...Hansen has a dominant fastball (which Delcarman doesn't have) and a dominant slider. He has struggled some, but has tremendous upside as a STARTING pitcher. Delcarman is just another relief unit to add to our bag of trix. If Hansen isn't quite as good as we hope, convert him to a pen guy. We have nowhere to go with Delcarman...he's relief and nothing more. Sure, Delcarmans stats look good now, but David Aardsma's did for the first month. As far as the Delcarman and Masterson ... if we needed to toss back a middle spect from our side to make it happen I'd do it just to get our hands on Masterson. he is a kid KW should definately target.
  13. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:59 PM) HOw about a Fields-Hunter-Pena OF? Richar would lead off, btw. Hunter is good and with those CFs beside him, he damn well better be. I hope this deal dies on the vine. We all know Kenny, he puts stuff out there, manipulates the media while working something else. For all we know Chin Ling-Hu is on his way to Charlotte right now, or Carlos Quentin is on his way to Chicago as part of a package with the D-Backs. Maybe the Yankees will get involved and give up Joba the Hut or Chamberlain to keep Dye out of Boston.
  14. Yea, Pena is due for FA after 2008. I stand by my statement...either get off one of those untouchables or add in a 2nd prospect ... Masterson/Delcarman/Pena would be fine with me.
  15. Masterson makes me happy...Hansen makes me happy....Maybe we'll hear different. THis deal isn't done.
  16. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:54 PM) Oh come on. People act like we've seen gold-glove defense from either of our corner outfield spots the past couple seasons. That simply isn't the case. You don't need great defense in left-field, and I doubt Pena is much of a downgrade defensively from Dye, especially once WMP gets used to playing at US Cellular. Fair enough, but one of the reasons we wanted to dump Pods, one of the reasons we hate Mack in center...defense is very important. Hell, because his defense is so good many in here wouldn't mind Brian Anderson being an everyday player in Chicago despite the fact he can't hit big league pitching.
  17. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:50 PM) What will it take to re-sign Pena? Hope he can catch the ball at least. He can't catch the ball no. The guy is Dave Kingman the 2nd. He can hit a ball 800 feet, but will be a terror in the OF. Hell, we'll have Jerry Owens in center who can't throw it 20 yards, Mo Pena in right field pretending he is playing soccer, and in LF? Maybe a converted 3rd baseman. Oh yea, things are looking up now.
  18. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:47 PM) You're assuming that the other teams are offering what the White Sox want. This could be the best we are getting for Dye. I think this is one of those wash situations. No winner, no loser. Oh no, I am not assuming, but if this deal is made today then yes I think we screwed up. If this deal is done tomorrow then I will agree with your premise. We can improve this deal. Personally, Masterson is my choice...if we get him then I'll be very happy. I hate Relief Pitchers...nothing more than guys who weren't good enough to start. (yes, I know we stink there) ... Masterson is really coming on.
  19. Again, I think the Sox can do better than this. Yes, Delcarman is a good relief guy and Pena is another version of Dave Kingman (who can't love that?) ... but with 5 teams in play for Dye, I'd like to think we could get better.
  20. A relief pitcher and a bad outfielder for Dye? If we do Delcarman and Pena for Dye with no less than 5 teams showing interest in Dye it would be mind-boggling.
  21. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:19 PM) Presumably, another part of it has to do with the injury to Ortiz and giving him a little more time ot recover. Makes sense, but I don't want to be the MASH response unit, giving away players for very little after someone on another team gets hurt (see Iguchi). Dye is wanted by numerous teams....I say milk those other people and get a better package or have Boston come up off a 2nd pitching prospect or someone like Jed Lowrie (SS)
  22. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) I like Masterson a lot. I do as well. Would love to get him, but I still think we can get a little more.
  23. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:13 PM) JD Drew says hi. ... I know I know....the guy who is getting 2 million dollars for each homer he hits. I still don't see the fit. They should probably just platoon Pena and Drew and cut bait next year. I am assuming they may want to look at Dye some for first base. Still, Pena is of little interest to me unless we didn't have Jim Thome. I'd take him sure, he is young and has great power potential, but would rather see us pull in two extra 'spects with him, even if we have to toss one back to them.
  24. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:07 PM) Unless the pitching prospect is one of the "Untouchables" Boston keeps talking about, then I see no reason to take this instead of the draft picks. Agree totally. Either give us two good prospects with Pena or 1 great one. They have already offered us Pena and a good prospect. We can improve this. Plus, I have no idea why the Red Sox are in need of Dye so much.
  25. QUOTE(dwalteroo @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 01:06 PM) I'd rather see Machowiak in the OF than Pena. Come on Kenny, let's not get crazy here! That's my problem with Pena as well...he is a talent, but questionable. I have scouted some of the names the Red Sox are throwing around WITH Pena and Masterson or Hansen are the two I would be most interested in. Still, I think this is not a deal we need to make now...give the Dodgers, Mets, D-Backs, Yankees even a call and see if they can top it. I bet someone will. We could get a RF to replace Dye and maybe two good prospects on level with Masterson or 1 great prospect.
