  1. I agree. You could start turning a light or two off. Flicker some concourse lights and blame an electrical issue. But I doubt that would work. Like I said earlier, I'm glad I didn't have to make the decision. And continue playing was probably the harder choice. If someone else was shot it was a bad decision and you are done. If you cancel and people panic and someone gets trampled, not your fault, you were trying to keep them safe.
  2. https://scrippsnews.com/stories/billions-of-taxpayer-dollars-are-funding-sports-stadiums/ Out of the 124 teams in the four largest North American professional sports leagues, the vast majority play in venues either built using public funds or that were taxpayer-subsidized in some way. It can lead to large amounts of money paid from local governments to teams.
  3. Politicians in cities without a MLB team line up to build stadiums with promises of booming entertainment areas and economic growth.
  4. Since I don't know all the information they have it's speculation on my part. I do know for example folks that study these things discover things that are counterintuitive to what we think is right. For example someone calls in a bomb threat to a school. Of course you will evacuate kids from classrooms. Except that puts kids into the hallways near lockers, garbage cans, and other more public areas that are easier to plant the bomb. Then they walk outside and stand near cars and other areas that are even easier to place a bomb. You don't even have to go inside to inflict mass casualties. If they announced the game was cancelled (my first thought was to what they should have done, and I believe others as well) would people panic? Certainly if they were truthful and said there was a shooter. Stop the game for technical difficulties? Probably better, but that is lying. I'm just glad I didn't have to make the decision. In the end, no additional people were hurt. So whomever made the decision can probably sleep better tonight.
  5. A shiny new stadium attracts casual fans, folks will come for a few years just to see it. The players won't matter as much. A sweet stadium deal makes the franchise more valuable. Marginally it may be a tiny factor on the decision of free agents. It's bragging rights when he's chilling with the other owners. Who wouldn't want a new car if it was gifted to them no matter the condition of their old one.
  6. No one reported a shooter on the inside. You wanted to know there was a shooter outside the park, so you could go outside the park? Would you want police to secure the outside first? Maybe check the neighborhood? Or at least announce there has been a shooting in section 123. If you guys want to stay, we're going to keep playing, but if you want to leave, safe travels.
  7. I intensely dislike furniture shopping.
  8. We're on the "coming on down" train to hell for laughing.
  9. Where y'all aware that there is technology in place to listen throughout the city for gunshots? That's the first I heard of a outdoor, wide area system.
  10. A bullet doesn't fly on a rainbow shaped path. Ballistic tests should be able to prove if it was the backyard celebration. I'm guessing math teachers or possibly social studies.
  11. BTW, sending 20,000 fans towards the exits isn't something to do without careful consideration. You don't want people panicking. MLB requires every team to have an evacuation plan in place. I'm not certain of the time line between when they confirmed it was a bullet that did the damage and how much of the game remained. That could be a big factor in their decision. On the surface continuing to play seems like a mistake. Once more details emerge their plan to have fans exit at the normal end may look less wrong. Disco to Hip Hop.
  12. Which would match when the shooter left. You may need an alibi. PR through the years. Blame it on Outside agitators The opposition Secret government agencies Communists/socialists/radicalized Accident Rival gangs Mafia Lack of God
  13. I'm not certain immediately going to town on the entire front office is the best use of time. I'd focus on the key positions of evaluating talent before some of the logistics stuff. And we assume that everyone in the organization is an idiot and needs to be fired. If you ever worked for an idiot ask yourself, were you an idiot that also needed to be fired? We may have some good people in place. I don't know.
  14. Nightmare on 35th Street
  15. Good point. Would you agree though that its only if the players have some talent. We could take a bunch of A level guys, put them in Sox uniforms, and even with amazing coaching and being well managed, they will lose 100 games. I don't think Sox fans will come out for that. A poor manager with any sort of talented players will drive away fans in frustration with bad decisions. A well coached team with average to above average talent would put fans in the seats.
  16. “I'm sure that there's going to be 150 names come up that want to be a part of this organization,” said Grifol when asked about Moore. “This is a really good organization with a great owner. ... All he wants to do is win. So there's a lot of good baseball people out there. Coming from Pedro, an insider. It must be true.
  17. Interesting idea. I wonder if it's like the Panama Canal. The cost of repairs and keeping it modern was more than what it was worth. Would JR want to own an old stadium or generate revenue out of someone else's building rent free?
  18. Still how many fans come to watch a manager? I don't go to Spurs games and watch Pop.
