This is a really good point and post. But I think the fans who care about this kind of thing are a minority of the fanbase: a smaller one than folks like us who post on baseball message boards realize. Moneyball heroics doesn't put butts in seats - to the contrary.

Imagine that - using 2021 rosters to predict 2021 results! This is the point I was making when I mentioned the Padres in the thread above. For reasons too obvious to require explanation, it's absurd to penalize this year's roster for the performance of different White Sox rosters of the past (many of which were designed to lose during recent tank seasons). It's especially ridiculous when you're willing to judge teams like the Padres solely by their current roster and ignore their even more established history of futility.

That's got some interesting stuff, hadn't read that before. It's heavy on the post-trade period, and I take it all with a grain of salt given that it's from the mouths of Padres scouts who have a vested interest in making themselves sound good. But still, sounds like despite not pursuing him hard in 2015, the Padres did target him specifically in '16.

I think the bottom line is we'd have to know more about the Padres' scouting of Tatis, and their decisionmaking process in that trade, to be able to evaluate how much was scouting and how much was luck. It's possible they had him pegged as a star and couldn't believe their luck when we were stupid enough to trade him. It's possible they basically picked his name out of a hat, thought no more of him than we did, and were as shocked as we were when they saw what they had. It's possible they were at any number of points on the spectrum between those extremes. I don't know enough to know, but I think it's fair to say there was a substantial element of "surprise" in Tatis's outperformance of his perceived value as of 2016.

I think they thought he was BPA. Lots of folks at the time hyped him as the best/smartest college player they'd ever seen. I don't think they drafted based on need - IIRC Moncada was still thought of as our primary 2b at the time, and it's not like our outfield was "full." He was above Kelenic in every mock I saw.

Then again, how does having Tatis impact other moves the FO has made since? I play this game all the time with Tatis, with the hypothetical world where we signed Machado, etc. For example, does this frugal front office "splurge" on Robert if it has Tatis in the fold? Would they have set their sights on some other free agent rather than Machado given the crowded future infield? Maybe they'd have entertained trade proposals for Anderson? I'm not saying the Tatis move wasn't a huge error, but you can't just plug him into the current lineup like nothing else would've changed - anybody who's watched the "Back to the Future" trilogy knows that.

Who knows, but I don't think we need to expect that outcome necessarily -- from my understanding long-lasting symptoms were the exception, not the rule, for someone his age. Multiple young people in my family have now had COVID and none had any symptoms that lasted more than a few days.

I love it, actually. Too lazy to do the math on the innings, but with the number of times the fifth starter is skipped I suspect it would work out.

You're still stuck in the same place. Where on earth are you getting the idea that I don't "take exception with" Tony LaRussa's criminal actions? I think what he did is terrible, I don't support the hire, and I think the organization has handled the situation as poorly as I could possibly imagine. Now back to the actual point. I now realize it was you who originally said TLR is a "felon" (two-time felon, I think?) That's false, no matter how you slice it. The statutes that restrict felons' voting rights, for example, don't have a category for "shorthand felon," or "felon depending on how you look at it." If you called TLR a "felon" in a court filing you'd be subject to sanction. You should just acknowledge it, but somehow it seems like you're still digging. That's your right--this is a message board, after all, not a court of law--but as a moderator you should try to do better in my humble opinion.
