QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 09:02 PM) His splits against left handers get worse and worse while he has a career OPS of .748 vz right-handers and this year is actually .772. Acceptable on the right team but I don't know if that is us. As a part time or platoon player yes but maybe not what we would have to pay at arbitration. His .772 against righties is good for 13th best LF against righties this year. Better than players like Josh Hamilton, Matt Holliday, Shin Soo Choo, Yeonis Cespedes, The .353 OBP is good for 9th best. If Viciedo was hitting lefties like he has in previous seasons, that would be a high-quality offensive platoon. While we'd all prefer some future-star left-handed power bat out there next year, does anyone have a good suggestion of who that is? And what does it cost to get them?

Danks hitting .363 since the call up. Adam who? (Eaton, not Dunn) -
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 03:10 PM) The fact that we got the best player in the draft at 3 tells you all you need to know about the entire process. Higher pick isn't always better. There is some chance that it's slightly too early to proclaim Rodon or anyone else the best player. You can comfortably say he was the closest to major league ready.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 08:22 PM) Tick, tick, tock, tick, tick, tock, tick, tick, tock. The assumption is he'll be in the the opening day rotation next year because the plan will be to try to win the division. So putting him in the bullpen in Sept is irrelevant to his arb clock.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) Baltimore needs a LH bat for playoff push to go with Cruz and paying Dunn 1 month salary is doable. I didn't realize they were playing Cruz in the field as much as they are. The O's just need to come down with a phantom injury right about now.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 16, 2014 -> 09:06 PM) Top 11 is protected. It's only the top (bottom) 10 teams. It will be 11 picks next year because Houston will get a bonus for not signing their #1 this year. So assuming Houston is one of the worst teams, it is Houston plus 9 more teams getting a protected pick.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 16, 2014 -> 09:14 PM) Yes, but today we were out of it (at the start of the day), because 11th is Seattle huh?
-
I think Dunn goes to Oakland. Unless some other team ends up with an injury.

Harrelson, predictably, taken to task by media

Not watching the game. Did Hawk address the situation in the broadcast? -
Wow. Into the bullpen in the 1st. This is nice.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) A worse version of Adam Dunn could still be a useful contributor to a team as long as he is not paid >$10 million for the privilege. I'd rather have THE Adam Dunn (TAD)
-
Alvarez is just a worse Adam Dunn.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 06:49 PM) He was referring to collisions. No one has a sense of humor anymore. My man, nobody has a better sense of humor than me. When a character on Mad Men says something akin to that, it's funny because the writer has constructed it such that the target of the humor is the misogynist male character making the point. If you're younger than 70, it's really weird to hear a guy on tv angrily saying something, the upshot of which is "women are f***ing p*****s." If Hawk had a chance to think, he wouldn't have said what he did, but when he gets all angry he has little control of what's coming out of his mouth. It's like there's a catcher in a skirt blocking his ability to see that this might not be the best thing to say right now.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 06:36 PM) I'm tired of Hawk embarrassing the Sox it's time to move on. Stone is excellent and Hawk drags him down. I've defended hawk for years, that time is over. I wonder if they might consider making Wimpy a more regular part of a rotation. That would be the best.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 06:30 PM) In this case it's somewhat appropriate. This implies playing sports like females. In collision sports such as hockey or lacrosse there is far less hitting because the rules dictate that hitting is less tolerated. So if the new rules dictate less hitting. It is more like the female version of these sports. Sorry for the sarcastic humor. This game really makes me angry at the game of baseball, which I truly love to watch. Ah, like how they wear skirts in softball
-
When was the last time a broadcaster angrily and sarcastically referred to players wearing skirts? I'm going to guess 1955.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) This has nothing to do with it. The rule was put in because Posey fractured his ankle on a collision. Concussion had nothing to do with it. Hawk's comment was about football.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 05:43 PM) Completely agree Hawk. It's just not baseball. I think Hawk is embarrassing himself. I'm not referring to this particular tag play The difference between "the good old days" and today is that medical science knows a lot more about the longterm effects of concussions on the brain. There's, you know, a lot of guys committing suicide because of it. He said (paraphrasing) "what, are they gonna turn football into a girls' game?" He said that out loud and it was broadcast on TV.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) I really do not understand how nobody wanted Dunn in some aspect for a playoff roster. The trading season isn't over.
-
Yeah, Dunn

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) I see, so you're in on the "they actively want him hurt" version. Well that fits with how they've treated him this year too. I am being sarcastic, if that wasn't clear. If there was something physically wrong with him, they'd put him on the DL like they did earlier this year, and told his fatass to lose weight to help relieve strain he'll put on his ankles/feet over the long season. If he is suffering from being "mentally tired" from the grind of the long season he's not accustomed to, great. That is another thing he is experiencing and hopefully improving upon in a season that does not matter so that he's better prepared for it in a season that does matter. Abreu having the experience of fighting through a slump and coming out the other end is an excellent thing to be gained in this season that doesn't matter. If Jake Petricka falters in a high pressure situation, make him do it again, and then again. I'm glad he's doing it this year because the Won-Lost record doesn't matter. Same thing.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:11 PM) Since his hitting streak ended he is hitting .194 with a .515 OPS and a single extra base hit. Not paying attention seems like the least negative excuse. They probably don't even watch the games or know that Abreu was an all-star this year. I bet Hahn couldn't even tell you the name of the team who plays in San Francisco.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) But I suppose it is different from when you were complaining that Konerko would be playing too much and Abreu not playing enough when they announced Paulie was coming back. The important thing is that there is complaining about SOMETHING.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) Even Hawk commented on how tired Abreu appeared on Sunday. He's starting again today in what would have been a perfect time to get him just one extra day off. The manager, the general manager, and the owner who's paying him many millions of dollars clearly don't care what happens to Abreu and/or don't bother to pay any attention. Only internet message board posters do.
