Who's better than Danks on the potentially-available list now that Mccarthy, Smardjia, and Hammell are gone (besides Price)?

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:18 AM) My guess is Dunn gets traded to an NL team looking for LH pinch hitter. He still has an OPS over .800 vs RHP so that could be valuable to some team looking for some help against RHP. I wouldn't hate seeing him stay just because there's no one that needs his playing time so keeping him isn't really a detriment to the team. Seattle or the Yankees would seem the best fit for Dunn. Yankees just DFA'd Soriano.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 02:24 PM) At the end of the day, I think it's going to be difficult to find the proper return for Viciedo. He's likely going to be a mediocre hitter the rest of his career who always flashes with his talent. His upside and talent that shows like an Encarnacion or Beltre is always going to get him chances and give the team who has him under contract optimism for the future, thus possibly overvaluing him. The thing is, Dayan Viciedo is the exact type of player people want to acquire during rebuilds. See if the guy can put it together and if not, you have others coming up in the minors. We're sick of him as Sox fans because we've seen him for years and years, but how many Rangers fans were tired of Chris Davis murdering AAA and coming up and failing? How about the Reds with Encarnacion? It's not the worst thing to not get a return on someone via trade. Frankly, the same thing goes for Beckham too with the caveat that the Sox have middle infield depth and Beckham is a free agent after next season. So, no,I don't think they should trade him unless they get a big enough offer, which I don't foresee happening. I agree with most all of this and if he's still costing us very little, there's no urgency to ship him out. But he also shouldn't be penciled in for full-time at bats. Since he became a starter: 2012 OBP .300 2013 OBP .304 2014 OBP .303 That kind of player, if he's also hurting you as a corner outfielder (or 1st base) defender, pretty much needs to be one of the top home run hitters in your league to be worthwhile.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 07:01 PM) Balta has quoted over and over again the average OPS for a LFer in around 710-720. It is .737 for American League left fielders this year, and that includes the playing time by backups. If you have a defender of the caliber of Adam Dunn, or Manny Ramirez, or, Justin Upton or Matt Holliday or Viciedo, they need to be a much above average hitter to make up for it. That's the only reason to put them out there.

This "argument" is obviously entirely for sport. But anyway.. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 04:37 PM) As bad as some people think Viciedo has been offensively, he's been close to league average. He did get closer to league average after having his best game of the season yesterday. We'll see if he keeps it up. His OPS on Tuesday was .698. Danks put up a .682 OPS last year while receiving the most regular playing time of his career. He has an .831 OPS at AAA this season. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 04:37 PM) Danks is an absolute black hole with the bat and takes away value from the guys batting before and after him. "is a black hole" doesn't give any quantitative reference to allow for a comparison between players. What color hole is Viciedo then? Dark, dark grey? Light black? Viciedo is a black hole as a defender. When you add up respective hole colors for the different facets of the game, how do Danks and Viciedo stack up? QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 04:37 PM) The whole "a run saved is a run earned" is nice in principle, but field a lineup full of great defense, bad offense players and you're team will suck because context does matter. What if you have a lineup full of great defense and then one guy who is bad and is also a subpar hitter (Viciedo)?

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 07:27 AM) People can hate all they want on Viciedo and be eager to move him, but when Jordan Danks is the next best option we have in-house, things can get a lot uglier. That's the thing. Danks would be an improvement. Things are uglier now. You might well be someone who doesn't fully appreciate the respective value they bring as defenders.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 08:12 AM) Jordan Danks is fine as a 4th OF, to be used mostly as a pinch-runner/defensive replacement. Biggest reason Sierra gets the nod over him is that two of the starting OF are left-handed. When I brought up Jordan Danks in this discussion, I wasn't suggesting that he should be a long term solution for the Sox. He'd be a fine 4th outfielder. I was pointing out what little value Viciedo provides. Viciedo shouldn't even be our 4th outfielder next year. He should be a part time DH, if anything.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 07:41 PM) I stopped reading. Jordan Danks isn't even Brian Anderson. Brian Anderson in his one (almost) full season, 2006: 0.0 WAR Dayan Viciedo since the beginning of 2013 (his last 207 games): 0.1 WAR

If anyone is dumb enough to give us anything of value for him, take it. With his collection of "skills" he pretty much needs to hit 35 home runs to be a worthwhile starter. He's a big fat strong guy. He's a liability at the 2nd easiest position on the field. He's obviously subpar on the base paths. Remember when he hit 25 homers in his first full season? That was a nice start. And his high-water mark thus far. And still not remotely enough. A .744 OPS for a defensive liability is not close to good enough. The only thing you could say he has excelled at in the major leagues is hitting lefties. If we're offered nothing decent for him and can pay him $2.8 million again next year, make him the Konerko of the 2015 team. DH against lefties. Emergency outfielder if we've got some injuries. Jordan Danks is a more valuable baseball player. The Sox should focus on getting the highest possible value (hitting, defense, base running) outfielder they can next year including if that means sliding Eaton to left field. DH Viciedo against lefties if he's on the team.

Ventura single handedly won the game today by keeping Alexei out of the lineup so he could pinch-hit at the most opportune time. Alexei gets a pinch hit single on the much needed 4th run. Ventura also knew that Putnam would give up a run, which is why he knew he needed to pinch hit with Ramirez.

Who do you most want to keep after the Core 4?

QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 04:10 PM) did you read the post in which raBBit explained it to me? I did read it. But did you read the post to which I was replying? If you had, I would assume it was pretty evident "what is the point???" I was making. But I suppose I'll use a few more words to make my point more clear. I replied to the statement: "Eaton needs to be a 750ish OPS guy to have the type of major impact we need in the leadoff spot." This comment in particular and other comments of its type often don't make much sense to me. I then pointed out that the White Sox won a world series with a leadoff hitter who had a much worse OPS than Eaton currently does as support of my position that Eaton does not NEED to be a .750ish OPS guy. Eaton is not one of the top ten biggest problems with the team. A .700 OPS in 2014 is way, way better than a .700 OPS (what Pods had) in 2005. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 09:11 AM) Eaton needs to be a 750ish OPS guy to have the type of major impact we need in the leadoff spot. For the World Series champion 2005 team, Podsednik had an 86 OPS+ Eaton is currently sitting on a 105 OPS+ -
Whoever it was who was arguing Gillaspie needed to be DFA'd if Davidson had a decent spring is conspicuously quiet in this thread.

If Ozzie Guillen got 8 seasons, Ventura deserves 20.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 05:29 PM) There's ZERO doubt if Viciedo ends up with a 650ish OPS, compared to 750ish...that the writing will be on the wall in terms of his White Sox career, and there will be considerable justification for moving on. Viciedo's a DH playing LF. 850 OPS would make him worthwhile.
-
QUOTE (bulokis @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 11:16 PM) how is he defensively? Maybe he can be a good utility guy. He's been our best player in the minor leagues this year. He's started virtually every game at SS over Carlos Sanchez, so presumably he can at least hold it down. OPS over .850.

Sox Draft Carlos Rodon> Draft Day Discussion Thread

I'm sure I already missed this discussion, but why hasn't Reid-Foley come off the board yet? -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 15, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) I think everyone loves post president Bush and there isn't anything less polarizing than baseball. With his connections I think he'd be an amazing hire. But more of a pipe dream candidate because why would he want it? His name for the job has obviously been at the top of the list for this job in every article about this for year's now, but just can't see it. this was meant to be in green? -
Beckham feels no added pressure from Semien/Johnson

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 14, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) What over the past two to three years gives you any indication of this. He's a below average starter and has consistently proven that. Below average starter can still mean 16th best in baseball. Half of all starting players are below average. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ May 14, 2014 -> 11:16 AM) The first and worst major acquisition of the Rick Hahn era is already in the books. Hind-mf'in-sight.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 10:25 PM) Figures...what a horrible, horrible loss this would be. Ventura's been outmanaged so badly. Semien's been outbunted.

Will Sox be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline?
Vance Law replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 03:43 PM) You cross that bridge when you come to it True. But right now I'm interested in wild speculation way too early in the season. Would they move a Dunn who's hitting well while they're sitting in 1st place at the all-star break? -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) part of the plan was hoping to deal some of the older players for younger talent and then spend money if/when they can actually contend. What happens if they get hot and are actually in 1st place around the deadline? -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 27, 2014 -> 08:10 PM) Ultimately it's going to be a battle with him and Garcia for that final utility spot...depending on what happens with Keppinger eventually. The only way Sanchez could be a starter would be at SS, playing nearly GG defense and OPSing 650-675 (essentially what Alexei was giving us the last couple of seasons). He doesn't have enough pop for 2B. Also, what if Saladino doesn't come back down to Earth? Sanchez, L. Garcia, Semien, Saladino- how are they generally ranked at SS defense?
