  1. Mike Carp DFA'd by the Mariners. I'd call him an upgrade on Lars Anderson. Will Sox go for him? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/mari...Trade+Rumors%29
  2. 2012 set a record for most strikeouts in all of baseball for a season. The raw total as well as K/9.
  3. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Jan 21, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) Link Jeff Keppinger, whom Joe Maddon used in Tampa Bay last season to platoon perfection (.376/.402/.521 against lefties) but is neither good enough against right-handers Keppinger hit .302 against righties last year and .285 over the last three years. He also hit against righties more than twice as often as lefties. The "can't hit righties" comment makes no sense, nor does the notion that he was platooned.
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 09:06 PM) Now, 2B has become more of a power position than even 3B, which is a bit strange since you normally think of 3B as bigger/stronger, typically. Average team last year got a .699 OPS and 13 HR from 2nd basemen, and .753 OPS and 20 HR from 3rd basemen.
  5. Anyone think Kelly Johnson could play some third base? If so, he could be a decent buy-low low risk platooner for Keppinger and Viciedo (and pressure on Beckham).
  6. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 30, 2012 -> 07:02 PM) Starting the season with Viciedo platooned would be terrible. My point was that with 6 guys covering 5 positions there's a lot of playing time for everybody. PK did not play in 18 games last year and even with that time off his second half was not strong. Kubel gives time off not just to Viciedo, but Konerko and Rios as well. And he's better than a AAAA guy when/if someone hits the DL.
  7. Kubel seems to make pretty good sense to me based on who's available. No reason why there's not room for him. If none of them got injured at all (very unlikely) and playing time was split exactly evenly between Konerko, Dunn, Rios, De Aza, Viciedo, and Kubel, that would be 135 starts per player.
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 8, 2012 -> 12:10 PM) First, Viciedo is no Justin Upton. I applaud Hahn's effort to get creative in his pursuit of Upton, but it would have to be considered something of a longshot if he could turn Viciedo and De Aza into a group of more attractive prospects. We'll see. As for Upton, I think he's the best player on the market and well worth emptying anything we have on the farm (aside from Hawkins) to get. Think about it, when Hawkins is scheduled to be in the big leagues Upton will just be hitting his prime years. 35-40 HR's a year in his prime at the Cell. Except that Upton's only under control for 3 more years, and if he's hitting that well, there are a few teams that would outbid us for his next contract. I'd rather have De Aza and Viciedo and $12 million a year than Upton and Wise (or Danks).
  9. Considering Youk's last 3 seasons with injuries, the fact that Keppinger was clearly the better player last year, and the fact that Youk will command a salary 3 times higher, this was the smart move.
  10. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:34 AM) No, actually Escobar is a nice little player and this deal is yet another in a long line that shows the value of defensive SS that teams believe can/will hit enough to stick. He's a worthwhile defense first backup SS, but he was never going to start here over Ramirez, Beckham, Saladino.
  11. Hey, where on the site is that detailed spreadsheet with the Sox payroll located?
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 11:00 PM) Still, the Blackhawks have shown you can take a franchise from the dumps of despair back to the penthouse fairly quickly. ...and straight back to irrelevance.
  13. 7.7 Ozzie is gone. Dunn and Rios CAN'T play as bad as they did last year. Hopeful about a Quentin trade and a full year of Viciedo. Ozzie is gone. I still believe in Beckham's potential and Morel progressing a bit. Healthy Peavy. Ozzie Guillen is gone.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 05:25 PM) I still don't see anyone taking AJs contract Agreed. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 05:25 PM) or the sox paying half of it. This I could potentially see. Paying half of it means saving half the money.
  15. I'm excited that the new manager is a smart person instead of a loudmouth dumb person like we've had for 8 years. I'm psyched that the new manager was a hitter in his playing days unlike our previous manager. This can only be an improvement.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 04:43 PM) what we think Quentin should be worth. I guess the question is, "just what do you think that is?" You can reasonably expect him to put up an OPS between .800 and .850, play below-average right field (hopefully not atrocious). Track record indicates a likely DL stint (hopefully not a whole month, but maybe) and all this for a price tag of around $7 million? In my opinion, you take whatever you can get for him and non-tender if you can't trade him. It's not that he doesn't have any value as a ballplayer. But he's not worth that pricetag when you have Viciedo who can likely do the same thing for $7 million less. Especially with the payroll as it is. He has value to a team in need of corner outfield power whose willing to pay. Who are those teams?
  17. QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 3, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) Just noticed that the Sox revised the Top Ten Prospect List. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2011/ You are suggesting that the White Sox rank their own prospects and then publish that list on the mlb site? This list must be created by someone else. Correct me if I'm wrong, someone who actually knows the answer.
  18. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 20, 2011 -> 08:04 PM) At best, he has a Juan Pierre type season.. In 481 more at bats, Pierre has 6 more extra base hits than De Aza. De Aza clearly will be the starting left (or center) fielder and leading off next year.
  19. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Sep 14, 2011 -> 06:21 PM) Without looking.. Dave kingman, Rob deer, mark Reynolds, Steve balboni None of those appear. Those guys hit for terrible averages, but actually hit the ball out of the park and so were somewhat useful. The problem with this list is that it's only batting and does not incorporate fielding (and therefore includes several base stealers who almost certainly added a lot of value in outfield defense). Dunn, as a DH with no defensive value would have to be right near the top as most useless player.
  20. Trade Quentin, Danks or Floyd, and AJ if possible (by eating some salary). Trade Ozzie to the Marlins for one of those frozen Mai Tai backpack contraptions. Tell everyone to hit better.
  21. QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Aug 6, 2011 -> 06:59 PM) Of course credit must be given for successes, mostly pitchers, as I try to think of position player trades that were really great and can't think of ONE. um, Jim Thome
  22. Yeah, no explanation for why Peavy got moved back to Sunday.
  23. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 06:36 PM) Let's not forget AJ, either, if he decides to leave. We'll have trouble replacing him. Really? I see about 10 free agent catchers who make about a third or less of what AJ does and they can all put up the .700 OPS you can expect from AJ (though he hasn't quite even produced that yet this year). We would have been better off with Castro starting all year. Flowers could put up a .691 OPS for the league minimum. If AJ were to come back it better be at a HUGE paycut.
  24. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 01:20 PM) Then your down an OF, and barring a creative move you'll be stuck with the likes of De Aza, Jones, Teahen, etc getting significant time there. Jones has absolutely demolished Quentin in terms of value this year. They've been virtually identical at the plate, with Jones being insanely better in the field. I'd suspect De Aza is more valuable overall as a right fielder than Quentin as well. Teahen, I'm not so sure.
