Jeff Passan doesn't sugar-coat the Peavy trade
Vance Law replied to knightni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (WCSox @ May 25, 2009 -> 08:46 PM) I'll give him Chris Young, although he isn't exactly a "star." Give him nothing. Young has a career OBP of .297 playing in a band box in the NL. And that's about the same as Brian Anderson. And he's been more brutal this year. Young has twice as many MLB at bats as Anderson, and does not appear to be getting better. Even with his power, his OPS is below average for an NL CF in each of his 2 full seasons. Not exactly a star, and not exactly league average yet. But for at least 2 years people complained that we gave away for free Ken Griffy Jr. in his prime. Nevermind that we got a well-better-than league-average starter who averaged about 210 innings in his 3 years here, and we stole an MVP in Quentin from the team later. -

QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 06:03 PM) And before Pods, who the hell was our last decent leadoff hitter? his name was Ray Durham -
QUOTE (lvjeremylv @ Mar 7, 2009 -> 08:58 AM) Just doesn't happen. Yes it does. It happens all the time. Every season. That's relief pitching.

Braves interested in Swisher... but not his contract.
Vance Law replied to JDsDirtySox's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) Educate me. Why do they want to dump him already? They've got too many corner outfielder/1B/DH guys with Tex, Damon, Nady, and Swisher, Matsui -
I like Dye. The team would be better with Abreu plus whatever we get for Dye.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 6, 2009 -> 08:20 AM) He's a f***ing roider. Not that that has anything to do with your post! Seems everyone forgot Mr. Pettitte was on the juice too. No one ever suggested he was on steroids. He admitted to using HGH. Bid deal. I'm eating a bowl of HGH right now. Either way, Petitte is pitching for the Yankees or he's not pitching.

Coop will fix him.

Cabrera probably WON'T go to the Dodgers

3 years $30 million? Sign him, Kenny, and put Alexei in center. -
Johnny Estrada was non-tendered by the Mets. He was a good-hitting catcher a couple years ago, does he suck now?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 08:33 PM) It would have been nicer had we noticed Curtis Granderson in our own backyard, almost literally. Having him as our CFer would have solved a few of our problems...unfortunately, not leadoff...but he's a very, very good player. Not Sizemore-esque, but the next tier down. The strikeouts are the worst part of his game, and nullify (like they do with Chris Young) some of his other attributes. I'd say Granderson is right there with Sizemore. Granderson has been the better player over the last 2 seasons combined. Sizemore pretty much strikes out as much or more than Granderson does.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) yeah can someone break down the financial implications of the possibilities at this point Griff hit .314 with runners in scoring position for us.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) Thome was actually 1 of 4 players on the Sox to post a .300+ AVG with runners in scoring position this season. He also led the club in OPS with runners in scoring position and runners in scoring position with 2 outs situations. Your post was long on actual facts, but short on complaints and bad, ill-reasoned trade ideas. What is it doing here?

There should be a feature on the board that won't allow the person to post the message if it contains the phrase "trade [player who has no-trade protection]."

Didn't someone post a list of all the free agents for 2009? That should be stickied.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) Wise has one good month and it was 24 at-bats. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6442/s...x9yCw.hZqWFCLcF Look how awful he's been after the ASG. Since his multi home run game against KC two weeks ago his BA dropped 48 points, OBP dropped 31 points and his slugging has dropped 111 points. That's garbage. You and numbers is garbage. You can't use raw numbers like "dropped 31 points!!!" without providing the pertinent context of his very small number of total at bats. Swisher's OPS dropped 177 point between April 18 and April 26. That's only 8 days! As awful as you suggest he's been, he has the same OPS as Swisher

QUOTE (Felix @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 08:29 PM) Yet one of them is a career minor leaguer and the other has a proven track record that offers some hope. Yeah, I'll take Swisher for his career. I'll take whoever can help us most for the next month over the next month. The arguments for Swisher pretty much rest on his poor hitting having receded in the minds of Sox fans because he hasn't played, and that bad memory being supplanted by Wise's bad week. A week in which he still did those things that few others on our team can do because of his speed. Against Cleveland, 1st to third on a single. Tagging and scoring on a pop-up to short. A goddamn pop-up. Later that game stealing 2nd, taking 3rd on the overthrow. And again, he's' not Owens. He's OUTSLUGGED Swisher this year. Maybe Swisher would get hot right now if he were put in. Maybe. I don't know and you don't. I do believe that Wise simply has a higher likelihood of hitting for average, making contact, stealing bags and otherwise using his speed, with just about as much power potential as Swisher.
-
Because I was in goddamn line for a beer, watching it on tv, for the play at the plate and Thome's homer, I'll have to say BA's catch. Too perfect. Also, loved batting champ Mauer bunting and AJ gunning him out.
-
Wow! All of the displeasure with Wise is exactly what a not-smart person would say. He's definitely been in a slump for a week plus. Swish was in slumps for months at a time. Someone complained that Wise strikes out too much, evidently without noting that Swish has 135 strikeouts in 153 games. Wite, you said you don't think he's all that fast. He's always looked fast to me, and is 9 for 9 in stolen bases. Clearly not just a Owens-like track star, he's slugging .450 (better than Swisher)- hit 15 homers between AAA and the majors this year in about 320 at bats. And on a team full of walk/strikeout/homer sluggers, it's pretty darn sensible to have him in there to vary the attack. Seems clearly like a case of Sox fans only being able to remember the vary immediate past. He's had a bad week. Overly emotionally react and say he sucks, forget about hating Swisher and his .219 batting average because you haven't seen him play in a while.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 30, 2008 -> 11:03 PM) Sox players should buy every one of them dinner and Cliff Lee who hates the Twins. Easy there. That's not allowed and is considered sorta like bribery in the rules. Torii Hunter almost got in big trouble for a similar thing in 06.

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 12:38 AM) The blackout looked amazing on TV. The twins entered the black hole and got smashed. That's cool, I wondered how it looked. It was amazing there. Best game I've ever been to.

Still just need to tie the Twins record over these 3 in order to force the Tiger game.
