  1. Thank goodness the Sox have talented young players in the middle infield right now, so there's some time to find some future talent there. I also expect that there will be some focus on this in this year's draft.
  2. QUOTE (beck72 @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 10:25 PM) Ideally, the long man would keep the other team from scoring and the offense would rally. The sox offense has not been an offense that could rally from a deficit. So, given that the Sox have a pitching heavy team with an offense that most feel won't be able to rally from a large deficit, wouldn't you rather have the guy that helps you win the (likely more numerable) close games than the handful of blowouts that the Sox have a small shot at coming back to win?
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 26, 2010 -> 12:14 PM) 8==============D ! QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 26, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) Shhh. It's a boner! Oh...I thought that was the Dash logo...
  4. QUOTE (jhonnydanks @ Feb 25, 2010 -> 09:37 AM) don't stop get it get it! anyone gonna be in atl for those exhibition games? I'll be at one or more of those ATL exhibition games.
  5. The other reason not to worry too much about an extra emergency infielder is that our infielders, except Paulie, can play more than one position, giving versatility in case one guy gets hurt. If someone is hurt for more than a few days but not long enough for the DL, the Sox can call someone up and do without an extra pitcher for 4-5 days.
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 10:39 AM) So you're telling me he s*** his pants when they showed Kate Winslet's bobbies. Bobbies?
  7. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 1, 2010 -> 11:26 PM) Depends on what you are looking for in a "Canadian beer". For my money, I haven't tried anything that touches Unibroue which produces world-class Belgian style beers. My dissertation advisor got me 2 of Unibroue's Trois Pistoles and 2 of the Maudite as a gift for reaching a data collection milestone. I can't wait to give them a try!
  8. I'm not a huge Martz fan, but hiring him does make a ton of sense. Lots of connections to the current coaching staff, successful offensive coach... plus the Bears really should be a "pass first" team until they can get any semblance of a running game going again. Watching the Bears constant run themselves into bad passing situations last season was incredibly frustrating.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 28, 2010 -> 06:02 PM) And you'd have to spend a decent amount of money for a proxy fast enough to handle streaming video. Just buy a slingbox and get a buddy with a cable box to hook it up Ding! Ding! Ding! This is the answer. Since I moved out of state, I set up a Slingbox at my brother's house in the Chicago area. I watch all televised Sox and Bears games through that now. It's well worth it.
  10. Is it a stupid idea to bat him 9th? That way he has the "order" effect of being a leadoff hitter (except in the first inning) but without getting the most ABs on the team? I really don't like his career "meh" OBP in the leadoff spot.
  11. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) These days I tend to agree with you, the clubs are of limited use. I used to belong to a few of them 15+ years ago when Florida was still a total beer wasteland and they were great. Now, especially in a big city, I think you have enough variety that the clubs are not needed. If you want to get him a nice beer-related gift, you might think about a subscription to a quality magazine called All About Beer, or a homebrewing magazine like Zymurgy or Brew Your Own. Excellent suggestions! Thanks!
  12. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) I'm not sure that I even believe Thome and Dye were in the same bar out in nowhere, illinois. And, I sure don't believe Thome is going oout in public and getting hammered and making out with chicks. But, it sounds good. Canton isn't that far from Bartonville, which I believe is where Thome's parents live. When I lived in Peoria, I ran into Thome once or twice at local pubs, so the story has some face validity.
  13. Does anyone have any experience with any of these "beer of the month" clubs? My brother is a beer lover and does some homebrewing as well. He lives in the Chicago area and has access to some very good selections of beers at local beer/liquor stores. I'm not sure if he'll get anything that special in the "beer of the month" club that he can't find either in Chicago (or that I can get here in GA if he can't get it in the midwest). Any thoughts? Thanks!
  14. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 10:12 PM) http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/1047116...sign-3B-Figgins Weird. Enjoy losing, Chone If the suitors arent climbing over each other lining up for him, you'd think we could come in with some kind of offer and be taken seriously. Especially when you think about the declining closer we're about to give 7.5M to I don't think these things are remotely comparable. There's little risk with Jenks, since he's year to year right now. Would you be comfortable with four years of Figgins? I wouldn't be. Having said that, if Seattle does sign them, he makes their lineup better right now.
  15. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 04:55 PM) Angels still don't want or need Konerko. Sorry. ...and no other teams "need" Gary Matthews, Jr. If the Angels want him gone, which it appears they do, they're going to have to be creative. At least Konerko is a useable player whereas GMJ is not.
  16. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) $18M total. That's an incredible haul for Polanco. I'm curious as to what Boras' asking price is for Adrian Beltre if the Phillies would rather shell out $18M for a 34 year old Placido Polanco who had a down year at the plate in 2009 and hasn't played the position since 2005 and a total of 153 INN since 2003. If this turns out to be true (the Polanco signing), it really puts a damper on my Beltre to the Sox dreams. There's "win-now" and there's just plain not smart. This is the latter.
  17. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Nov 30, 2009 -> 07:49 PM) Cust: - Crushes on the Road - Crushes RHP and coupled with Anrdruw Jones they could really put up some numbers - Can play a corner outfield in a pinch - There is a chance there is some upside left - Crushes all-you-can-eat buffets and coupled with Andruw Jones they could really hurt local businesses Thome: - Crushes at The Cell - Crushes RHP but might not accept a platoon - Doesn't even own a glove anymore - It is all downhill from here, the question is snow bunny or skydive? - Jiim told me that he no plans to even run out base hits in 2010, it is 600 or nuttin' - My downstate inlaws can only name one player in White Sox history... and it isn't Ron Karkovice If the $$$ is equal, and all that matters is winning..... Cust is the no brainer choice; But with that being said, if you made me bet which one was more likely to be on the roster.... Humor aside, you really didn't make a case for Cust over Thome. An "over the hill" Thome outpeformed Cust last year.
  18. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) i think he would be a quality starter hit in the 2 hole, Iguchi wasnt that good of a hitter in 05 he just did what a guy in the 2 hole should do and look where gooch got us. Plus hes still one of the best defenders in the game. Vizquel can't hit enough to be a starter in this league, let alone hitting in the #2 spot of the order. 2005 Iguchi is a far better hitter than 2009 Vizquel. If a trade like this were to happen, the Sox would have to dig into the FA market for a 2B.
  19. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 10:51 PM) The context for both my previous posts is in the statement I responded to: "The Sox have struggled to find a league average leadoff hitter the last few years" The statement is still true. I was overjoyed at what Pods gave us off the scrapheap last year, but look at what the Sox had been running out there in the leadoff spot recently. No question about it, the team has struggled to find a league average leadoff hitter.
  20. QUOTE (docsox24 @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 04:25 PM) I was saying that I agreed with you 100% Well then, I must comment on how bright and reasonable a poster you are....
  21. QUOTE (docsox24 @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 02:37 PM) I know things and he was not signed to be a starter I'm not sure if we're agreeing and disagreeing. My point was that the poster claimed Jones was definitely going to be a DH (at least part of a full time rotation there) while I claimed Jones would be a backup (though perhaps DH some). I never claimed Jones would be a starter.
  22. QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 12:04 AM) I'm willing to bet KW is trying to get Byrnes. 1. KW and Josh Byrnes have traded alot in the past 2. Eric Byrnes is a former Moneyball Player 3. He's a grinder. I prefer to keep Linebrink. I think he'll turn it around. I think we'd have to dump Jenks or Konerko in order to afford Byrnes. Do you want this to happen? Or you just think it's what KW will do? The nicest way I can say this is that Byrnes would not help the team at all, and giving up much better players in Konerko or Jenks to get him would be a mistake of enormous proportions.
  23. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 10:55 PM) "We didn't sign him to be a DH but that more or less is what he is." He was signed almost entirely to be featured part time in the Sox DH rotation next season. According to KW, Jones was signed to be a backup OFer. Do you know something we don't? (Of course, he may DH some, especially if he gets hot, but it doesn't seem that the intent of the signing is as a DH... and I'm one who even suggested Jones as a platoon partner with Thome if the Sox go cheap at DH). QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 11:00 PM) I don't know why fans are so fixated on this deal. Jones won't get more than 200 plate appearances and he shouldn't. He may play the OF once every couple Sundays, but it's not gonna be often. The Sox just aren't counting much at all on Jones and the size of their offer proves it. He's making less then Dwayne Wise did last year. I don't see much "fixation." Sure, there's a decent size thread on this, but there's not much else going on. Might as well talk about what's real than a bunch of rumors and speculation. You seem to not like the move. You don't see how we can help the Sox? You don't think he's an upgrade over Wise?
  24. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 11:04 PM) Seriously, Swisher is exactly who he described. Average speed/.370 OBP ...and a horrible lead off hitter for the Sox after April of 2008. Just because Swisher failed as a high OBP type leadoff hitter doesn't make the idea behind it void. The Sox have struggled to find a league average leadoff hitter the last few years, and clearly a high OBP guy is cheaper than a guy with high OBP + speed + contact. For a guy getting the most ABs on the team, the most important thing is for him to "set the table" by being on base for the big hitters coming next. Speed would be nice, but speed is not > OBP in my opinion for a leadoff guy.
  25. QUOTE (BFirebird @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 04:49 PM) I probably wouldn't be too opposed to that. But I would accept it only after all other options are explored, which I believe KW covered in his..."the DH role might not be solved until the end of free agency" (paraphrased of course). I would believe Thome would be an end of FA choice at this point. I agree. If the Sox sign (or trade for) another power hitter, I have no problem with a cheaply signed Thome as DH. As others have said, I like the Jones deal as long as he stays a bench player.
