  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 01:27 PM)
    I agree on the Oz criticism on the Thome thing. Even I, an Oz lover, said immediately to pinch run for Jimmy.

    Luckily the O's bats didn't have it last night and we won a boring 4-1 game. I thought that was pretty big not to run for the plowhorse Jimmy.

    Thinking as to why he did that, it's pretty amazing Oz must have thought we might need Jimmy's bat in extra innings. That was interesting to me that he'd think that way.

    Except that AJ shouldn't have made the 3rd out at 3rd. It was close, but not THAT close. Aggressiveness is good, but, as a baserunner, your first priority is making sure the run scores. Maybe it was Cox's fault, I don't recall seeing that in the replay.

  2. QUOTE (joeynach @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:54 PM)
    So Richard gets traded who is our 5th starter and we call up a bullpen arm. Aren't we still missing a starter?

    We don't need a 5th starter right now, but after using our bullpen heavily yesterday, the Sox need an extra bullpen arm, just in case. The Sox will worry about a 5th starter the next time they need a 5th starter.

  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 11:17 AM)
    I'm sorry but looking what we gave up, it wasn't really anyone I was excited about long term. I mean, poreda COULD be matt thornton? I mean, this isn't the bartolo colon raping, but we didn't trade anyone that would be a major asset to our team. Best chance is Carter.

    Not to mention, look at how well the GMs are doing (Ricciardi) or have done (LaMar, I think for Tampa) when they only ask for "rape" type packages for their players? Other GMs won't work with those kinds of GMs. This is still a better "deal" for the Sox than what the Phillies gave up for Lee, IMO.

    2nd, do we make a move for Doug Davis or Paul Byrd to get possibly only 3 starts out of them (if Peavy's really coming back in August) or just gut it out with what we have...?

    QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 08:45 PM)
    I honestly feel comfortable enough bringing Torres up and letting him anchor the 5-man. If not, I wouldn't mind trying to nab a cheap veteran through waivers.

    IIRC, KW said the Sox needed the 5th starter 3 times before they expect Peavy back. One was last night. So with only 2 (maybe 3) starts left for a 5th starter, no way the Sox acquire anyone when they have Colon, Torres, or Garcia to pitch those games (or heck, do what they did last night if the bullpen is rested).

    As for the main topic, 1-4, I don't think anyone is better than the Sox. The Sox have quality and quantity in the starting rotation when Peavy is healthy. This alone makes them division favorites going foward and allows the Sox to spend money on the "right" bat in the offseason rather than overpaying for another SP.

  5. QUOTE (League @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 10:56 AM)
    That CQ seems to be looking a LOT better up there?

    He looked good last night, and I heard (didn't see the games) that he looked good at the end of the Minny series as well. A healthy, 2008 producing TCQ + Peavy = ALC Division Champs!

  6. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 08:04 PM)
    I don't think 2 games out warrants a firesale but I do think it'd be nice to not go for it with crap additions and end up coming up short or being bumped in round 1 of the playoffs. I get the whole "it's nice to get in cuz anything can happen" but when ur bumped out then what?

    No offense Pumpkin, but I hate this argument. Maybe I'm getting old and cranky, but I remember when the Sox making the playoffs was a big deal. I also think we are pretty lucky as fans to have a consistently winning team right now.

    Back to the topic at hand - great deal by the Pirates in terms of potential talent. However, as others have said, they are constantly rebuilding. How many years have they done the same thing and never been competitive? I guess their best bet is to wait a couple years until the Cubs are crippled by their contracts and the Brewers can't afford their current core. Still, I agree with the "sucks to be a Pirates fan" sentiment. At some point, you just want to see your team win!

    That's called an accessory navicular. There is that extra portion of bone and can interfere with the achilles tendon. I've seen it in a few dancers. Sometimes the surgery is necessary but not always.

    Good Luck, it's always best to avoid surgery whenever possible.

    Makes you wonder about NSS72's night job...

  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 09:21 PM)
    Do you think Clayton Richard will still be in the starting rotation for the Chicago White Sox in late July, 2010?

    I do. Richard has shown that he can be a legit back of the rotation starter, at least. If he's not traded for an ACE, he'll be in the rotation. Given the price for ACEs right now, I say he'll be in the Sox rotation a year from now.

  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 05:47 PM)
    Trading Jordan Danks still causes major league difficulties. We have to hold him and give him a shot unless we're dealing both Danks.

    I'd be willing to part with Floyd in a Haren deal. But really...not much more than Floyd.

    I've seen this argument alot over the last month or so when trades are discussed. I just don't buy it. If KW uses Jordan Danks to get an ACE pitcher, Jon Danks is going to be so upset that he won't sign an extension with the Sox? Or he'll just become a puddle of mush and fall apart the rest of the season? Jordan Danks' biggest value to the Sox is the position he plays and the hope that he can solve the "CF Problem" going forward, not some bargaining chip for his brother's future with the team. I think KW can and would trade Jordan Danks if the right deal came along - such as one for a legit ace.

    QUOTE (wilmot825 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 06:21 PM)
    Giving up Floyd and adding Haren does not solve the 5th starter problem....we need to keep Floyd, Danks, and Buehrle. Trade Poreda and Richard

    Another argument that I disagree with - the so-called "5th starter" problem. Richard has had some bad starts sandwiched in between some good to very good starts. Richard, Torres, and Colon all pitched well in their last starts. The Sox have options at the #5 spot, and it is not currently a problem. The problem is bad play, especially on defense, the offense not showing up lately, and the bullpen collectively sucking.

  10. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 03:01 PM)
    Bingo! I can't say that I'm supremely confident in our #4/5 pitchers, but how about some freaking run support for these guys? The Sox have failed miserably to capitalize on mediocre pitching this season.

    As for Contreras, he's been pretty effective since returning from his rehab stint. That leaves the #5 spot as the only real concern (to me, at least) at this point. And it's pretty difficult to find a team with a really solid #5 starter.

    Not only that, but if you look at the production the Sox have gotten from the candidates for the #5 spot (Richard, Torres, and Colon), each of their last starts has been pretty good.
