QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 03:45 PM) It's not difficult to explain at all, and you sound like a f***ing idiot. So the solution is for EVERYONE to have a gun. Because, if, no matter what, an officer can presume you have a gun, then unless there's some type of video/cam, it's always going to be his word against the victim's. Therefore, since officers will shoot assuming you have a gun anyway, why not just let everyone have a gun? P.S. I'm sure trained professionals can hit a 300 pound guy from 35 feet away at least once or twice at waist level or below if he's taking 6-8 shots. Are we supposed to believe this guy's moving as quick as William The Refrigerator Perry down the street like an enraged bull?

QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 03:20 PM) If the Sox had an opportunity to sign Scherzer to a 4/100 contract they would it in a heart beat. It'll never happen. Yep, it's years 5-8 or 9 or 10 that are the killers with these contracts. The Tanakas and Abreus of the world are few and far between. In this market, maybe only Yasmani Tomas and the Japanese pitcher who has been so dominant. Of course, the likelihood of the White Sox giving that many years to a relatively-unknown Japanese pitcher, especially after all the concerns about Tanaka have emerges this season have to be about 1-3%.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) It'd be nice if the police had some sort of incident report/debrief from Wilson dating back to last Saturday before any external information (witness statements) was known. It would also be nice if Wilson wouldn't have been out there on the street for 3-4 hours with time to think up a response...every hour that goes or went by, the story was going to change as his emotions went from shock to self-preservation. (Probably not unlike what Tony Stewart's dealing with at the moment).
-
Attorney Eric Holder is going to Ferguson on Wednesday. Apparently Obama's giving tonight and Tuesday night with the Missouri National Guard before he considers changing up the response and possibly making it a federal situation, although he clearly doesn't want to be viewed as taking one side or the other...and politics is already hard to separate from this whole situation with Jay Nixon feeling a tremendous amount of heat for his handling of events so far. Sounds like he is VERY leery of going there personally.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) Didn't the police chief already say that the officer wasn't aware of the robbery? Yes. And that's where the story is shifting/changing by the hour. This came from one of Wilson's friends/acquaintances. And has been making the round of conservative websites and talk shows (just going by the description from one of the network news reporters). I just entered "bum rush and 35 feet and Michael Brown and cigars" and the whole testimony popped up. It almost seems TOO perfect, where it doesn't ring completely true any more than the "neighborhood witnesses." It COULD be true, of course, but reality is always somewhere in between.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 03:00 PM) If only we had a Lucas Harrell type player to offer... If they can find guys like McHugh, Harrell and Humber on waivers, it's going to take a lot more than we're willing to give up. They'd ask for something like Montas or Danish and Hawkins for Appel. Of course, they're not going to get it, but everyone's seen the crazy trade proposals and what they were trying to get in return.

Same thing with former White Sox Carlos Torres against the Cubs today. He actually pitched yesterday late in relief, but had to take the emergency start as apparently Bartolo Colon's mother is gravelly ill. Kudos for persevering....he stuck with it, went to Japan for awhile and now he's back in the big leagues. Really good kid, well liked by his teammates from everything I've read.
-
He pulled up ahead of them. And then he got a call-in that there was a strong-arm robbery. And, they gave a description. And, he’s looking at them and they got something in their hands and it looks like it could be what, you know those cigars or whatever. So he goes in reverse back to them. Tries to get out of his car. They slam his door shut violently. I think he said Michael did. And, then he opened the car again. He tried to get out. He stands up. And then Michael just bum-rushes him and shoves him back into his car. Punches him in the face and them Darren grabs for his gun. Michael grabbed for the gun. At one point he got the gun entirely turned against his hip. And he shoves it away. And the gun goes off. Well, then Michael takes off and gets to be about 35 feet away. And, Darren’s first protocol is to pursue. So, he stands up and yells, “Freeze!” Michael and his friend turn around. And Michael taunts him… And then all the sudden he just started bum-rushing him. He just started coming at him full speed. And, so he just started shooting. And, he just kept coming. Read more at http://www.brennerbrief.com/witness-michae...H0mut3WypWJP.99

There's no way in hell they're going to pay DeAza $6 million as the 4th outfielder. If they're not serious about contending next season, you'll see DeAza starting in LF again next year.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) How many of them were robbing a convenience store right before their confrontation. How many of them got physical with a cop on his own. Well, I think it's already been established the convenience store situation happened at least 4 hours in advance and the arresting officer had no clue about that. Plenty of them have gotten physical...although I think in a large percentage of these cases, the player was "Don't you know who I am? Don't you recognize me?" and maybe that kicks in a bit of a different standard of treatment/CYA. Robbing a convenience store? It's not like he went in there with a .38 special and shot the clerk and stole all the money in the register.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:19 PM) That was only part of it. You were pimping that guy as the next coming He's also a better hitter than Leury Garcia. That counts for something.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:18 PM) No, I simply meant performance issues. Let's say they acquire him and he goes into a strikeout binge and a 1-for-24 thing with 17 strikeouts. That's not exactly anything but buzzkill. I'm just saying if I"m a GM I don't risk it with my first place team. I think Mike Trout has done exactly this at one point this year. 0 for his last 19 with 7 K's. Also had a 16/64 (.250) stretch with 22 K's and only 2 homers. DFA time.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/sor...outs/order/true I can just see having BJ Upton and Ryan Howard for next season. Maybe Alvarez. Greg will have a coronary, as we already have Flowers right up there with the league K leaders per at-bat as well.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:14 PM) And you better hope it's not a member of your family. Or your teenager daughter sneaking in at night after curfew, or vice-versa.

And yet an unarmed NFL football player has never been shot down in the street by a police officer, have they? There have certainly been enough police/athlete confrontations over the years at traffic stops.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) The last time you were this in love with a Cubs pitcher was Travis Wood Jacob Turner, Felix Doubront, Wada, CJ Edwards, Dan Straily and Pierce Johnson are other options. It is quite the juxtaposition when you have Bryant with 40 homers and 103 RBI's and he was drafted last year...not being recalled until next June...and Rodon coming up this September. Same agent, of course.

2nd deck homer on a 93 MPH fastball by Baez. That was another bomb. 775 OPS, 24 K's in 60 AB's (40%). Those Mets uniforms have to go.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 12:26 PM) It's obvious that the Sox think more of De Aza than Tank as it's Tank that is on the bench when Avi is healthy. If anything, it's Viciedo that is persona non grata in the org (as he should be imo, his profile gets more and more Wily Mo Pena esque with every passing PA). That's hard to say, simply because there are a lot more RHSPers than lefties. It's doubtful DeAza is here after this season. Viciedo's more of a question mark because of the lack of power available on the FA market for reasonable prices.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) also fwiw, a customer at the convenience store called the police, but the owners and the employees didn't. Maybe didn't think it was worth the hassle to report a $20 (or however much some gas stations cigars would be) theft. $49 supposedly

Buehrle had an opportunity that offseason to go to the Nationals with a no trade clause, but was apparently swayed by Loria's supposed commitment to Miami. In an interview with Levine/Rozner on Hit & Run on Sunday morning, he seems to still be carrying a lot of bitterness towards Loria. He bought a house there in Miami, only to end up across the border in Canada without his family or beloved dogs. If he doesn't get back to the World Series, I'm sure that will sting quite a bit, knowing he could have been with a potential powerhouse team with a great bullpen at the end of his career.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:40 AM) I was perhaps the biggest fan of De Aza getting his shot when he got it, I think he'll earn his contract in general if he is brought back but here I have to say, no. He does not fit where this roster needs to go. He should have been dealt last offseason to avoid having to make this decision if he had a bad year. If offered Arb, we're talking about having him on a 1 year, $6-ish million deal. If De Aza was available as a free agent for 1 year, $6 million, would you say that was a good use of resources? I wouldn't. He's a guy who could potentially help fill a hole on a team for a year if they're looking to compete, but he's not a long-term option and he's not going to be easily traded unless he starts off on a roll that he never found this year. When we signed a guy like Paulino, or Downs, we could say "that gives us a chance to hold him if he gets better, trade him this season if he can bring a return, or at least have a solution for multiple years if he does well". None of those are the case with De Aza. If we're looking at a $75 million or lower payroll next year and not bringing anyone big in, then I'd rather take a chance on a reclamation project with several years of team control for that money. If we're looking at a higher payroll, then we have to ask whether De Aza fills the team's needs and that's a hard sell to me as well. Agree 100%. Scouts have seen him playing the last two months. They know his limitations defensively, on the basepaths and against LHP. If someone really wanted him, he would be gone by now. Not part of the future, and there's so many faults and limitations in his game that won't change or improve...just no way. Tyler Flowers is a totally different situation...whether to hold onto him or not.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) Actually I think they found it would lower the amount of lawsuits. People are less likely to make false accusations of police brutality if everything is filmed. We have the opposite in China. Many are buying cameras for their own cars to record people who dive or jump out in front of their cars, pretend to be hurt or injured...back their car into you at a stoplight, motorcyles or bicycles that deliberately fall over near or against your car and then you have to argue with that person in the street. Insurance companies are even providing a subsidy because it prevents frivolous lawsuits.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) Going back to this....this is why you don't f*** with cops. This is why you follow their instructions. At the end of the day, they will almost always have the "justified" argument on their side, whether it's right or wrong. I know that sucks for people who think the police are out to get them, and for people who are actual victims of police abuse, but you gotta win that battle in the civil courts, not by fighting the cops in the streets. I'm guessing the shoulder cameras are too costly at this point. And I wonder if the various municipalities will even want them when they become more affordable. Yes, it might save them from a lawsuit like this one, but how many more is it going to start? I would simply counter that when a majority of the country feels strongly that the cameras would make them feel safer, then it will happen, regardless of the cost. Would you put your 3 year old son or daughter in a daycare center that had 6 cameras taking constant footage or would you save $50-100 per month for a center without any cameras?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) I don't think it's been once incident, certainly not with the molotov cocktails. And I don't think it "almost always" deserves criticism. Media members test boundaries all the time to get the scoop, the shot, the interview, whatever. They disregard instructions constantly. I'm not excusing poor police work, false arrests, etc. But to me the Gawker post is more about piling on than reporting useful information. The last 3-4 days if you read twitter and blogs, it's a constant stream of "omg! the police yelled at me!" type quotes from media members. OF COURSE media members are going to be upset because that just gets them more attention. Wouldn't there be a vested interest on the part of all the conservative newspapers, Fox News, etc., to get the opposite story...so they can turn around and say they were right all along, which is basically that the big black kid "had it coming to him" and the police officer was simply doing his job and has been unfairly vilified??? Doesn't that get BETTER ratings? Which was the better story, the original Duke Lacrosse rape story, or the follow-up one?

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) We might ALMOST have that in Jared Mitchell. I would rather see Jared Mitchell than a declining Markakis at that price. It's about as logical as signing Curtis Granderson was last offseason.
