  1. Beckham is clearly looking to go to the right side now on nearly every pitch. That's resulting in opposing pitchers throwing inside on him...Gordon has to learn how to turn on those pitches again. It's one thing to look up the middle or just to make solid contact, but limiting yourself to 1/3rd of the field (where it's very hard for you to drive the ball out), not such a good strategy. Gordon out-thinking himself again. Apparently, Mike Scioscia inquired about Beckham (with Ed Farmer) and wanted to know the backstory about his personality and make-up...said the Angels would be interested in acquiring him.
  2. QUOTE (docsox24 @ May 17, 2012 -> 01:31 PM) I have my doubts that they will realize this. They should have realized it last year when Atlanta was offering legit prospects for Carlos. We might turn out okay with Hernandez and Castro, though. There's certainly no guarantee we would have gotten the same prospects the Astros ended up getting for Bourn.
  3. I give up. The Indians will win the division going away. They cannot be stopped at home, despite nobody showing up to watch their games. And, once again, the Royals cannot hold a lead against a surprisingly good Orioles team.
  4. The thing is, the Democrats are smart enough to know that going that route doesn't help but only rebounds against them. The biggest advantage that Obama has now is "likeability" (not relatability, necessarily) and his calm/cool/aloof nature which is actually often cited as one of his biggest weaknesses (to many), but which now comes off as a strength because his personality is so consistent. The people who will vote against Romney who are Dems or independents don't need to be reminded about his religious beliefs. But taking that attack mode (which will be perceived as unfair, especially against an incumbent when it should have been put to better use 4 years ago strategically) against a pretty popular sitting president will rebound against them with women, young people, independents and Hispanics who might be sitting on the fence. Despite Romney's record at Bain Capital, more people trust him with the economy despite it being another rehash of voodoo economics that's been tried already twice in our lifetimes and has failed miserably both times under Reagan and Bush II. However, despite their disastisfaction with Obama's policies, they would rather keep Obama as president because they like Romney even less and know what they're getting with him by now...and they feel that his ability to handle world/foreign affairs has been a pleasant surprise.
  5. The M's just took the lead again in extras. And the Tigers lost to the Twins. Morneau's back again. Survived a bunch of solo homers against them.
  6. Fister has given up 3 early runs for the Tiggers. M's leading the Indians 4-0 early, as well. Indians would be "only" 4 games over .500 if they lose that game, which is where we were 3 1/2 weeks ago.
  7. The only argument for having a better AL Central division record this year is beating up on the Twins. But every team in the division SHOULD do that...and we have to prove we can, and you'd think by the time we face them, perhaps they will be healthier or playing better baseball...this happened with the Royals/Sox after their 12 game losing streak, we caught them when they were pretty hot and lost 2/3. We're about .500 in the division and clearly an inferior team when compared with the AL East and top two in the AL West.
  8. I just don't see how that 25% of the electorate that's STRONGLY anti-Obama is going to be even more induced to vote... They're already motivated. It's always the independent voters who decide elections, and despite the overall unpopularity of many current issues (handling of economy, gas prices, which can't be directly influenced over a matter of days and weeks, the health care mandate, gay marriage, Wall Street bailouts), Obama continues to run 20-30% ahead in terms of the enthusiasm of his party. (Charles Blow wrote a column on this in the NY Times yesterday). Then you have the huge divides in the women's and Hispanic votes that were opened up in the GOP primary process and will be very tough to walk back. By all past measures, with the state of the economy being what it is, Romney should be 5-10 points ahead at this juncture, but it's basically dead even and most betting folks are still putting their money on Obama.
  9. He said it one time all off-season, then seemed to make a concerted effort to walk it back. I think that was after the Santos trade but BEFORE the Danks contract, yes? The real question is does he have the mandate from JR to tear this team completely apart or are they going to hope and pray for a 26-5 run to bail them out (see 2010) and lull them into another false sense of complacency that the "full rebuild" can be put off YET AGAIN and that they can rebuild on the fly while still being able to realistically say the can or could compete every year in the process? Can we actually manage to do that without a couple Top 3-5 draft picks in the first round? If the team totally goes in the tank (worse than 2007) and attendance threatens 1998/1999/2002 numbers, there's going to be more and more pressure to throw in the towel on KW, especially if the Cubs' rebuilding plan seems to be taking off faster and is showing more immediate dividends.
  10. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/us/polit...n-obama.html?hp at best an incendiary campaign and at worst a racist one. Puts Rahn Emmanuel in an interesting position vis a vis the Cubs. The club's father's owner is trying to destroy Obama with a campaign that the campaign itself would be ashamed to associate itself, and one which McCain ended up eschewing in 2008 (Jeremiah Wright, liberation theology, linking Obama and to the middle name Hussein and questions about his religion/birth certificate)...
  11. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 16, 2012 -> 09:54 PM) Also, watched most of The Change-Up last night. It was surprisingly very funny so far. I really enjoyed how Bateman and Reynolds were able to make fun of eachothers quirks and mannerisms. It really helped me believe they had actually switched bodies. Plus, I can probably watch any Ryan Reynolds movie. He is such a great actor to watch. Not because he is some great actor or anything, but he is very.....entertaining I guess? He's captivating. At first I thought this was written by a teenage girl. Guess it's the Reynolds/Gosling Effect...a little bit like Will Smith when he was the same age, where no matter how good or bad the role, he always made it eminently "watchable" at the very least.
  12. The Cardinals have five of the first 59 selections and the Blue Jays hold five of the first 60 picks. The rich just get richer.
  13. QUOTE (knightni @ May 16, 2012 -> 11:52 PM) Predicting 2013 or 2014 here... KW trades for Torii Hunter. And forces him into CF even though the days of Hunter as a Gold Glove-caliber player at that position are at least five years behind him.
  14. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 17, 2012 -> 12:32 AM) Viciedo was signed 2 years before Teahen started playing for the Sox. He was supposed to be the stop gap. He was signed for 3 years, right? That's a reasonable window for Viciedo to be ready. The Edwin Jackson rant is just a typical rant that may, or may not be related. You're just mad and you're gonna let everyone know, damnit!!! *edit* 1 year before, not 2 Viciedo was signed in November, 2008. Teahen was traded for in November, 2009. (Looks like ONE year to me, not two). When Viciedo was acquired, many thought he was going to be able to play at the major league level in either 2009 or 2010 (that's what actually ended up happening, he was very good when he first came up in 2010 before he tailed off at the end). The reason they signed Teahen is because they had already given up on Dayan Viciedo playing 3B after that season at Birmingham. At that time, nobody was expecting Dayan to stay at 3B because the organization was already viewing him as an outfielder/1B/DH type. Mad? There's no point in being mad about something that already happened. But to turn around after all this time and making Viciedo the starting 3B again would be ridiculous. The point is that we once again have nothing to show for a quality big league starting pitcher in Edwin Jackson...and we would have been better off simply sticking with Dayan Viciedo at 3B going into the 2010 season, in which case he would have three had full years of experience coming into 2012 instead of merely one. Now, because our minor league depth is so bad, we don't have a replacement behind Morel. So we're stuck ONCE AGAIN moving one of our position players around instead of having the depth to replace them from within...a strategy that clearly hasn't worked very well.
  15. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 16, 2012 -> 11:31 PM) Who did we trade for him, Getz and Fields? That just screams of "desperation." Wtf? The desperation was forcing him into the equation as the long-term answer at 3B instead of just as an experimental, one-season stopgap. The same thing as if we traded for Callaspo from the Angels to play there for the remainder of THIS season. Because of that idiotic, unwarranted extension, we traded Edwin Jackson for the last reliever on our major league roster (albeit, he's pitching better than expected, but still not a great end result).
  16. It would be pretty darned ironic if Viciedo does end up back at 3B, after all this. That type of desperate measure really has the potential to make the desperation trade and extension of Teahen look extremely short-sighted.
  17. Orioles score, looks like we maintain sole possession of 3rd place for another day, lol.
  18. The worst thing we could do is have him make 2-3 errors at 3B and mess up his growing confidence at the plate right now.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ May 16, 2012 -> 11:06 PM) Mitchell isn't ready next year for the majors. He's not someone they need to rush, especially with De Aza playing as a better version of him right now. And therein lies the problem. Our best hitting prospect doesn't do anything to help our team until at least 2014. That leaves 3B, C, 2B as major question marks going forward. And who knows if Alexei will ever return to being a 700 OPS hitter.
  20. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ May 16, 2012 -> 11:04 PM) Reinsdorf's Chicago American League Ballclub - for whatever ails you Mcgrad, have you ever posted in the first 4-5 innings of a game, lol?
  21. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ May 16, 2012 -> 11:03 PM) Mitchell 3-4, 2B. today. And a walk. Just not sure where he could play next year. They're not going to move Rios. The only way would be if Viciedo was moved to 1B/DH and Dunn was traded. Orioles and the Royals in the top of the 15th now thanks to Broxton's blown save.
  22. I hope they seriously don't give Morel's at-bats to Escobar. They have to try and see if Lillibridge can get hot again. If nothing else, if Brent gets on, it's like an automatic double or triple. Mike Trout's early season problems seem to be a thing of the past. He's getting on-base nearly every time now. Angels' announcers pointing out the obvious, that Crain's fastball is very straight. Trout out on the basepaths twice tonight.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ May 16, 2012 -> 10:57 PM) Worst OPS by at least 42 points right now. How do you have an OPS of 400? I didn't even know that was possible until this season. Marlon Byrd has to be happy that Brent's around make him look better in Beantown.
  24. Poor Morel. (Chris Snopek managed a career OPS of 639 and he was REALLY bad). 3 times up, hasn't gotten the ball out of the infield. I guess MLB is considering having the fake throw to 3B and then back to 1st be declared a balk beginning in 2013. Jack McDowell is probably busy penning a response to the USA Today and Commish's Office.
  25. Viciedo all the way up to .239 on the gift hit thanks to Mr. Williams.
