  1. Yep, going back to Shanghai and my teaching job this Friday....have to stay near O'Hare tmrw night. Goodbye to US and gaining 12 pounds in 4 weeks, haha. I came weighing 180 and now have to get back into shape playing badminton and ping pong, lol. At least I did get to see the Royals/Red Sox last Thursday and paid $14.00 with free parking because we were so late!
  2. This would have been one of those nights you'd have had to bet against the Sox if you were a gambler. With the Angels smelling a race again with the Rangers and Weaver going...no way they were going to lose this one. Glad it was blacked out in Iowa and I had no way to actually see the dismal results.
  3. The one prior to that, he faced Verlander and there was the stare-down incident with Carlos Guillen and Weaver was summarily ejected not so long after.
  4. Yep, the Dotel and Linebrink overpays. And a lot of missed opportunities as half the "new" White Sox fans from 2005-06-07 disappeared back into the woodwork.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 05:51 PM) If you hit Konerko 3rd, and Q is out, who exactly is left to hit clean up? Dunn? Baines, Melton, Kitty or Walker
  6. Well, Weaver hasn't won a game for something like a month. Don't think he's pitched that poorly (see Danks, J. 0-7 start) but simply a function of the anemic (yet better than White Sox nevertheless) offense.
  7. You're not going with AJ reaching 1B with the ball in the dirt? Crede's homer against Riske? Iguchi's off Wells? Joking....have to agree with the Konero GS, off Qualls...I think it was. The Pods and Blum ones weren't so shabby, either.
  8. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 07:17 AM) I'd off myself if they got Friedman. A dynasty (within the division) would be on the horizon. Didn't realize about 80-85% of the GM's who've led their teams to the playoffs were doing in with their very first team. Interesting. http://www.csnchicago.com/08/22/11/Kaplan-...amp;feedID=8487
  9. Then again, if Nick Swisher or Alex Rios were to say that, we'd probably think their PR person or agent wrote it and that it was entirely disengenuous.
  10. That would give the Yankees quite a logjam with Tex, Swisher, Posada, Pena, etc. Guess it doesn't really matter to them financially....Pena would only be $1.7-1.8 million for the rest of the season, something like that.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 06:53 PM) No thanks...if you look at the holes the Sox have, there's really nothing the Cubs can offer. Disinterested Castro for Beckham and all the gold in Fort Knox
  12. What is the limit to the number of claims you can make?
  13. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 06:22 PM) I'm sure that they have. Gavin's just the only one to have been claimed. Well, obviously Danks, Sale and Santos wouldn't make it very far.
  14. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 01:01 PM) Let's get a couple unearned runs and one earned run and win 3-2. We are fading in the division, but the Cheryl Tig's are overdue for a double digit losing streak. heehee! Does anyone else here know who Cheryl Tiegs is, lol? Maybe Christie Brinkley, but that's going WAY back to the late 70's/early 80's. I think she was the first one Sports Illustrated ever showed on the cover with what amounted to a see-through top.
  15. The only logic would be to save money and get back something in return...especially if we knew he would be willing to come back. Of course, if he really does intend to finish his entire career with the White Sox, you probably don't want to sacrifice it for 5 weeks and a post-season appearance, but that would be entirely up to Mark and his family, how he feels about his "Sox legacy." I don't think very many White Sox fans look at Frank Thomas in a lesser light because of the way his career ended with the A's and Blue Jays, do they? I get the appeal of being one of those guys like Gwynn, Ripken, Puckett, Mattingly, Ichiro or Yount that played for just one team their entire career, though. It's a short list.
  16. I hope the Twins did let him go to us, just to mock us. Unfortunately, that involves dealing with a real human being's feelings as well, and they would never do that because of the respect they have for him up there. Kubel makes pretty much zero sense, unless the goal is to keep Viciedo from every playing in the big leagues again. Probably they'll sign Kubel to a three-year deal, keep Quentin and then Viciedo will be stuck in AAA hell forever. Would actually love to see Kubel and Viciedo together (from an offensive perspective) in the same outfield, but that would turn it into a zone rating/fielding minefield...because the "eye test" tells you Alex Rios hasn't even been an average CFer this year. And as far as Frasor goes, it seems like he might be another Riske. Where we decline the club option and don't offer arbitration. We'll see how well "Edwin Jackson Stewart" with a mullet does against the 2nd best pitcher in the AL. It might not be a pretty sight with the Angels sniffing a chance to get back into the AL West race.
  17. Well, counting Teahen and Jackson, we've brought that down to the 110's. Yay!
  18. Coming into that series, we had a legit chance to get a three game sweep, too. I remember Jim Kaat saying that the Sox were the best team in baseball (at that time). And, of course, Cotts wet the bed. Thankfully, he did something positive 2 years later.
  19. Short, Marrero and Martinez are all more likely to end up in David Cook/Maurice Gartrell-Land than a major league roster. Danks is clearly on the outside looking in and he still has more upside than those three, arguably (especially in light of Flowers' surprising offensive resurgence the last two weeks after being given up for dead).
  20. http://www.csnchicago.com/08/23/11/Rays-wr...&feedID=661 http://www.businessinsider.com/andrew-frie...t-pujols-2011-8 Friedman to the Astros still seems the most likeliest... And we know JR isn't going to reverse course and pay his GM among the Top 3-5 in the game...although with how much money they've wasted the last 3 seasons, it's almost unfathomable why they wouldn't want to spend more money on management/scouting/development/drafting/international free agents and LESS on the payroll.
  21. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AvIc...ndidates_082211 We could only dream about one of these guys. Instead, it will be Rick Hahn, Kim Ng or someone totally off the radar. Probably Josh Byrnes would be the best pick.
  22. Well, we still have to rank ahead of the Astros, Cubs, Dodgers, Orioles, Mariners and probably the Mets. Although that's not saying much. And the sleeping giant on the northside could quickly reawaken with the right GM and manager in place and "stats-first" players like Ramirez and Soriano gone (yes, he has the same number of years as Dunn/Rios but the Cubs' new GM will be more likely to have the freedom dumping him than anyone the Sox have in that position vis a via Rios/Dunn/Peavy). After today, there's about a 90% probability we'll be 7 1/2 GB. Story on Billy Beane/Moneyball/current state of the game for "small market" teams http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/24/sports/b...&ref=sports
  23. "I'd love to add Jim Thome back, to be honest with you," said Guillen, who was looking for a more versatile designated hitter that also could play the field when Thome left for Minnesota in 2010. "A lot of people think I don't want Jimmy. It was just at that time we didn't have any place for him. "But I have said day in and day out that Jimmy is one of my favorite guys in baseball. That's up to [general manger] Kenny [Williams]. I don't know if we're going to have five DHs. I don't expect him to be here, but if they want to bring him here, if you ask anybody wearing this uniform if they want Jim Thome back, everybody here would say yes. But that's not our department." Scott Merkin Sure, we have Adam Dunn but we don't actually need him anymore. Who are the other 5 DH's? Viciedo? Konerko? Flowers? Lillibridge? Quentin? The prevailing hypocrisy, double-speak and knife in the back routine with KW and Guillen this year and has been more interesting than the play in the field. Sometimes (such as last night's MLB "game"), you really think Ozzie is daring Reindsdorf and/or KW to fire him.
  24. 2008: full no-trade clause 2009 - July 15, 2010: limited no-trade protection allowing Buehrle to block trades to certain unspecified clubs. A trade triggers an escalator paying $1M raise to $15M annually, plus a guaranteed fifth year paying $15M for 2012. July 16, 2010-2011: Buehrle may not be traded without his permission, under right as 10-and-5 player Fine, but it's stupid if they're going to lose Buehrle anyway just to hold on to him until the end of the season and not get anything back in return. And it's not about "trading everybody," this is one specific player, perhaps the only one in this particular situation on the roster that's needed for a specific purpose on another playoff team. If nothing else, they could save $3+ million dollars, if they're so deperate not to lose money this year. What are they going to do, offer arbritation and play the same game they played before with Cabrera to get a draft pick? Then you end up with Mark Buehrle at $15+ million plus for 2012 instead of a 2-3 year deal at a much more reasonable number they actually might be willing to pay to keep him in the fold. Why did we trade some of our veterans at the end of 2009 then during the same time period? This ship has already sunk. It's now simply about rearranging the deck chairs and saving as many people (or as much money) as possible. Same rationale went into giving up Ray Durham for Jon Adkins. They wanted to look at Willie Harris then and save money. We need to start assessing every aspect of this team for next year...if Buehrle's not going to be around, what's the point? You're telling me the Yankees would prefer to start Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes over Buehrle? I don't think so. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,5482496.story
  25. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:07 PM) You are hands down the best White Sox fan I've ever come across. You deserve some sort of commodation. Even this pathetic excuse of a team hasn't shaken you. I'm serious. Congrats on being No. 1 fan. Did you write THE HELP? Commode? Commendation? Hopefully he won't have a yard full of toilets like a certain character in the book.
