Gameday Thread-Doubleheader Special: White Sox vs Indians
caulfield12 replied to Kyyle23's topic in 2012 Season in Review
QUOTE (fathom @ May 7, 2012 -> 06:27 PM) We have 6 of 9 hitters in the lineup batting .214 or lower tonight. I don't know if I've ever seen that before this late in the season. And/or it's indicative of having the worst bench in the history of modern AL play, minus Lilly's stolen bases, nothing at all to like except for a few Fukudome walks and a Tyler Flowers solo homer against DET (his only hit out of almost 20 AB's). -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 7, 2012 -> 06:23 PM) You typically see weird lineups like this during a DH. It is pretty obvious though this team needs another lefty bat though. Yeah, I get that, you can't play AJ both games. But after the way we lost the first game, there sure doesn't seem to be much priority placed on not getting swept here. The Molina appearance might be more closely-followed than Stults' performance. Well, for sure one poster will be concentrating on it. -

We've lost four games to the Indians in the standings since last week....and climbing. Probably the weakest line-up that we've put out there the entire season, at least arguably. Apparently Ventura's not concerned with going 3-11 at all. Wish the "it's always darkest before the dawn" comment could apply here, but not sure it does. -

Very close to a homer to CF off the bat of Dunn but it dies right at the top of the fence. DeAza had a cheap blooper that fell in, Beckham K'ed on a pitch he chased that was way out of the strikezone. -
Quintana has less AA and above experience than Nestor Molina, FWIW. Guess they consider him more expendable.

There's not a separate Game 2 thread? Hello? Anyone still watching or listening to this team? With Konerko out of the line-up, chances of winning this game are approximately....well, not good. -
Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)

The point is, the Rays have made the playoffs 3 of the last 4 seasons (2008, 2010, 2011). We've managed that accomplishment 3 times in the last 20 years or so. And there's just no comparison between the AL Central and the AL East. -

QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ May 7, 2012 -> 02:07 PM) It was Colon. I remember that game vividly...Colon vs. Blackburn. Now I remember. That was the 1st time early in the season that all the Peavy trade rumors were flying around Chicago. That day the story broke in the Chicago media and then ended up being a disappointment with no trade as Peavy declined. -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:59 PM) BTW, how did Quintana's stuff look? 89-91 MPH fastball, but I'm on GameDay. Well, can't argue with the results so far after that initial jitteryness. Keep us within a crooked number of getting right back in it. In many ways, he has less experience than anyone on our roster. This year is the first time he's ever been above A ball, amazingly. -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) I was there...it was fun bad There was another home game in there for Garcia or Colon against the Twins that was like 20 something to 1 or 2. That was my last White Sox home game. Must have been 2009. Quintana has never pitched above A ball coming into this season, FWIW. -

At least Alexei Ramirez is still alive. Another basehit from sort of being back in this game. That'll work. The problem is there's almost no chance that Quintana will keep the lead at 3 or 4. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) A few weeks ago, people were telling me emphatically that Philip Humber was the best 5th starter in MLB and gave us the best back of the rotation in MLB. If Humber falls apart, that only leaves DeAza and Santos (although Molina could quickly ruin that too) as positive contributions KW has made since 2008. Everything else, not so good. McAllister now in great shape to get his first major league win. Last year, he held us to 2/15 (two hits were by Gordo, and he has another today). AJ 4 for his last 28. Make that 5 for 29. Konerko still motoring along under the radar at 350 or so. Rios will do what to mess up this inning? DP? Pop-up? K? -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:46 PM) Keep pitching him and hope he turns it around. If he ends up showing he can't be counted on as a starter in future Sox rotations, then holy crap, is the starting rotation depth awful. You're looking at Danks.......and no one else if Floyd is traded. All it means is Kenny will draft a college starting pitcher like Broadway who is supposed to be most MLB ready. And can we even be 100% sure with what we have in Danks at this point? The perfect storm of everything going wrong that can go wrong has happened...and once again coinciding with the perfect game/no-hitter effect. Not even Kenny Williams is going to survive this trend. Has Harrelson just completely lost it yet? Still in the booth? Ramirez finally makes a play to get us out of the most embarassing inning of the season for White Sox baseball. -

Welcome to the Major League Debut of Mr. Quintana. "Home grown" product #11 this season, lol. Humber's probably going to end up on the DL or the "family leave" list just to get him away from the game for awhile and clear his head. Hope the injury isn't serious. Quintana has similar stuff to Stewart, Ohman and Axelrod, lol. White Sox have the 2nd fewest bullpen innings in the AL. That's going to change after the end of play today, probably. -

He was pulled out of the game due to injury. AJ Pierzynski made the call to the bullpen. Not Ventura. -

ERA up to 6.51. We can't pull him yet because of the DH tonight, and Stewart pitched yesterday, too. Humber showing obvious signs of frustration. They're going to have to use Quintana sometime soon, though. Kotchmann was 1/16 with RISP coming into that at-bat. You're going to have to take him out of the game, despite the DHer. Humber HUMBLED. Now Phil Humber has an injury problem. Welcome to your rotation being Peavy, Floyd, Danks and ????/????. 19 earned runs in 12+ innings now since the perfect game (against BOS, CLE, CLE). -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:34 PM) 1/8 of a season at rookie ball and 1/4 of a season at low A after being drafted, one full season at high A, 1/2 season at AA, 1/2 season at AAA before being moved into starting in the big leagues. Danny Valencia was drafted at the same age and got almost 1.5x as many minor league PA's as Morel before coming up, just as a "prospect philosophy comparison". See Teahen, Mark disaster. KW sucks. End of story. But I don't think anyone is very sure that Morel's going to be any better than Chris Snopek at this point. -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:30 PM) fukudome beckham dunn konerko de aza rios aj ramirez lillibridge Why in God's name would you want to lead off the 2nd or 3rd worst hitter on the team, a hitter obviously on the decline? Did you see him play in CLE last year? What signs has he shown this season? For some reason we're now benching Dayan Viciedo when he's starting to look a little better...and when Fukudome has absolutely nothing to do with the future. Great, we might end up 30th in attendance and still not know about Dayan going into 2013 at this rate. -

Humber's not missing many bats in this game. Curse of the perfecto strikes again, or the Curse of 2008. Since that game, we're 3-9 and closing in on 3-10 and probably 3-11 if they start Stults (assuming Game 2 is played and they cannot skip him). Indians' announcer pulling a Harrelson and rooting it out of the park prematurely. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:25 PM) The small amount you might gain offensively with a little more speed, you lose defensively. Its a wash at best. The Sox have to see if Morel can play everyday. They know Lillibridge cannot. Umm....what evidence is there to suggest Morel can play everyday except for a stretch of 6 weeks against mostly rookie pitchers? Neither option is good, but Lillibridge gives you speed and some pop. Morel good but far from "great" defense overall. -
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ May 7, 2012 -> 12:03 PM) White Sox Option Dylan Axelrod To Class AAA Charlotte, and recall Eric Stults and Jose Quintana for the double header today. Stony just said organization loves Quintana and they think he will be a quality 4/5 starter in the majors. Welcome to the team Quintana, I can't believe there is no post about this. Also Jacob Petricka and Nestor Molina got promoted to AA Birmingham and AAA Charlotte respectively. LOL. Phil Rogers did write this today about Quintana (who was so good the pitching-starved Yankees just let go) and Cameron Bayne, who I've never seen listed as so much as a Top 20 prospect in the worst farm system in the majors. FWIW, they got McAllister for Austin Kearns. Quite a steal. At the time, Zach wasn't throwing 93-95, he was in the low 90's. 3rd round draft pick in 2006.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 7, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) Then they should have traded him correct? The second he moved to the bullpen his value plummeted. You have taught me well. I must say I am just shocked you don't believe Don Cooper can develop a #5 starter in the next couple of seasons. And just so you know, every team knew about Sale's potential issues. Its the only reason the Sox had a chance to draft him. Also, since the Sox had the #5 starter instead of Sale yesterday, for that game to be a win, Sale would have had to thrown a shutout. Highly unlikely. There's one start the Sox are better off he's in the bullpen. Do you read? When did Davis' value plummet because of overwhelming concerns about his elbow blowing apart at any minute? So the White Sox were "smarter" than all the other teams because they overlooked all the concerns? Sounds like the same rationale that got us Alex Rios and Peavy when he was on the DL. And I said there's no way those starters can be developed for 2012. -

So much for the hot April Fukudome. It's now May, and there's no reason to be constantly benching Viciedo when McAllister is actually much more effective against LHP. Nice to know Ozzie's trend of not benching Rios is being continued by Ventura. 5th double of the year for Gordon Beckham. White Sox 10th in the AL in runs scored, still first in strikeouts. And in another positive sign for Gordon, it was on a fastball. -

QUOTE (Jake @ May 7, 2012 -> 01:00 PM) This is looking pretty s***ty right now. I feel bad for Phil. At least he has the joy of a new baby. There's that. And you can't ever take the perfect game away from him. On the negative side, we're in danger of a disastrous 3-10 streak and only 2-9 more from equaling the horrendous stretch last year that completely knocked us out of the race at about the same time of the season.
