I think we have to temper the Miguel Cabrera Lite idea...but anything approximating Carlos Lee's career with the White Sox would still be a bargain for this guy. He has a great arm, which is something Lee was lacking, and he seems quicker and more agile at 3B (from what I saw in ST) than Lee or Konerko ever did...not that either were close to acceptable at that position.

IMO, they can't take long term risks with Peavy (although there seems to be insurance, like the David Wells contract, to mitigate the downside risk) AND Alex Rios both having major struggles or injury problems. Rios is paid like an All-Star caliber player, and he hasn't been that for quite some time now. There are many more palatable options. Before, we could have used that leverage to get Rios and Rolen for very little (just taking on the contracts, basically, for salary relief/budgetary freedom for JP), but he can't afford to make himself look bad. Many writers are already calling for him to be fired, just because he didn't trade Halladay AND for the Vernon Wells and BJ Ryan contracts...not to mention Rios'.

Trading Jenks for Crawford makes very little sense, to the Rays. How could they afford to pay a closer $8 million (plus) for only two seasons under their control when they can't afford Crawford, one of the most popular and likeable players in franchise history, for just one season? Yeah, I get that they might have more depth in the outfield than at the back of the bullpen, and that just sticking Grant Balfour into that role won't necessarily work out wonderfully, but I would be hugely concerned in the Rays' FO about acquiring someone with his medical history and with a seemingly declining fastball...despite his wonderful assortment of pitches and devastating offspeed stuff when he's on and has almost complete command. You give up Crawford for Joe Nathan (one or two years), but not Bobby Jenks. There are too many other comparable options that are less risky, someone like Jose Valverde comes to mind.

Supposedly, his fastball is in the 91-94 MPH range still, right? I haven't seen him pitch live or on t.v. in at least two months, though. On the surface, he looks like a decent reliever, strictly going by the numbers. But the reality is far different sometimes from the statistics...which is why baseball is such an interesting game to follow.

Or will his arm rebound at some poin in the future? Should we shut him down for 2-3 weeks and hope he can bounce back? Will Nunez and Pena supplant him? Thankfully, with Contreras, MacDougal and Dotel coming off the books, this is really the only BAD contract KW now has to worry about...with Konerko really rebounding well this season from an injury-prone 2008 (wrist/hand, oblique pull) to have perhaps the most consistent offensive output of his career.

We haven't traded Fields for just nothing. KW won't just give him up like he did Broadway and Anderson...there's always the possibility with Thome/Dye leaving he gets a 3rd and final opportunity, although it really does seem the writing's on the wall with his recent comments...not quite a war of words with KW and Ozzie like Rauch had in the media, though. Bridges are 75% burned at this point. KW's smart enough to know Nix/Getz can't handle 3B...Viciedo MIGHT arrive for 2010 and Morel/Retherford are long-shots at best. He can sit on Fields for now, wait for him to "recover" his ST stroke (short and quicker) at Charlotte and maybe he becomes a starter again in 2010. Or he finds a Mora/Rolen/Encarnacion/Wigginton (thinking Herbert Perry here) veteran on a one-year deal. Adrian Beltre would be "dreamy" but depends on Thome/Dye re-signings. Too bad Adam Dunn couldn't play 3B. I'd love to see them give Blalock a shot to return to that position with us...if the money's right. He also helps solve the LH bat issue/absence of Thome being gone in all likelihood.

Mauer seems ticketed for 1B eventually... If he was an everyday catcher, MAYBE. But that's such a huge long-term deal, only 3-5 teams in baseball realistically could offer it and survive him suffering a major injury.

Crawford is probably better suited for LF, because of his arm, with Jordan Danks/Mitchell/FA taking CF. Probably we'll try to keep Pods if he doesn't fall apart b4 the end of the season. However, Crawford will cost a ton, and there's no guarantee we'll keep him. Holliday's a Boras guy, so that more or less nixes that idea. Figgins is definitely the most logical, probably at 3B but possibly CF. It doesn't seem for the present that Ozzie wants to move Beckham off 3B, but I think they would have to decide which would give them the best possible defensive alignment (guessing they'd move Becks to 2B) with the acquisition of Figgins. Wouldn't go 3/30 for him at his age and with a so-so injury history in recent years...more like 2/18-20, take it or leave it. Would still be interested in Orlando Hudson, if the Dodgers don't control his rights for next year. In that scenario, he'd stay at 2B with Beckham remaining at 3B. Could definitely live with that. Viciedo, however, has REALLY REALLY picked it up...I think too many are discouraged, but if you look at his July numbers, he's really progressing nicely...and he's the heir-apparent at 3B, whether in 2010 or 2011. Flowers won't be on the everyday roster until AJ's gone or disabled.

Any speculation on our 6 players for AFL? Danks? Viciedo? Hudson? Ely? Shelby, III? Flowers to continue working on his catching for an extended period of time? Maybe a reliever like Santeliz or Nunez? Mitchell? Phegley (who's REALLY struggling so far in his adjustment to pro ball, putting up Francisco Hernandez-esque, the catching prospect, numbers)? Maybe they will give Gartrell a shot coming off this season's numbers and hope to catch lightning in a bottle like they did with Wise.

Indians were celebrating on the field like they won the WS after trading V-Mart, DeRosa, Cliff Lee, Francisco and Garko tonight. They really needed that win after blowing the 5-3 lead on the Guillen homer. Minnesota continues to really miss Neshek. He was the glue of that pen, and nobody they've tried in the 7th or 8th (Bonser, Bass, Ayala, Crain, Guerrier, Keppel, Mulvey, Balfour, Rincon, Humber) had/has had any success on a consistent basis getting the game to Nathan over the last two seasons.

Buchholz obviously has the raw stuff and has had some pretty decent results before falling off the map last year...one of Buchholz on the trade market was probably equal to Richard/Poreda/Carter combined. They were lucky to only have to part with Masterson in their trading frenzy. But pitching prospects are tricky...look at Homer Bailey, the Yankees' young starters, Price hasn't exactly lit the world on fire as easily as predicted.

Russell was finished with the Sox, maybe people are upset because he was a Top 5-6 prospect in our system when it was so weak...and Carter, well, remember what has happened with Gio, Faustino DeLosSantos and even the likes of Lumsden and Cortes, who was ranked a top 50-60 prospect in ALL of MLB not so long ago.
