  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 12:35 PM) I feel like Hawk is cheating on Yaz, Catfish, and Jim Rice this year with Al Kaline and Dick Williams. Erstad's coming around...he's starting to hit the ball hard to LCF and LF in the air, and not flailing away like he was against Zumaya or Sabathia.
  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 12:16 PM) This ump has a small strike zone. That's definitely an advantage for the Tigers. How did Garland lose 2-3 MPH off his fastball?
  3. QUOTE(Capn12 @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 12:08 PM) Grinderstad with a Crede-esque swing there for a base hit. Then Pablo pops out, boo Well, at least we're leading the AL in walks. Can't ask for more than RISP and Konerko and Dye coming up. Of course, 97-98 MPH fastballs aren't so easy to hit.
  4. QUOTE(JohnCangelosi @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 11:51 AM) Today's lineup: CF Darrin Erstad 2B Pablo Ozuna DH Jim Thome 1B Paul Konerko RF Jermaine Dye 3B Joe Crede C A.J. Pierzynski LF Rob Mackoviak SS Juan Uribe No "Sunday" line-up....and the Tigers have Monroe, Sheffield and I-Roid on the bench...although the first two are so cold, you might prefer they stay in the line-up, but you'd still prefer to take your chances with someone else in that line-up. And Vance Wilson isn't able to hurt us either, since he's on the DL.
  5. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 11:11 AM) Why would the General Manager like to cut back on payroll?? Why would any GM ever WANT to cut back in payroll? Williams gets a number from Uncle Jerry, and works off of that. If attendance is on par with last year, there is ZERO reason the payroll gets anywhere near 75 million. I have no idea where you're getting these ideas from. Because the ultimate success in baseball is doing what the Twins, Indians, Marlins and A's have done....being a playoff contending team with a lower quartile payroll. We won it all with a $75 million payroll, there's no reason we can't do it again. Mostly, it's about ego. I think he's willing to chop down to $85 million for one year (the Fields/Sweeney year in 08), THEN add exactly what he sees the ballclub needing for 2009, going back up to the $90-105 mark. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 11:14 AM) I don't think there is anyway that KW cuts the payroll under $100 million from now on. The only reason it would go down would be if he replaces Dye with Sweeney and Crede with Fields. He would then use the difference to resign Iguchi and Buehrle and also look at extensions for others. I also believe he is going to make one big splash this offseason in the FA market. Either that, or the attendance goes back down below 2,000,000 and he has no choice but to cut. We have a five year window to take advantage of the World Series. If we don't get back to the playoffs, statistics say a club will be back to where they were the year before winning the whole thing. We're in Year 2 now.
  6. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) So if we're going to let MB and Dye walk, trade Crede et al, where will we spend our money? I think KW will find some bargains out there, like a Mark Mulder or Loaiza, coming off an injury or off-year...and then some reclamation projects (veterans) in the OF, for instance, a Jose Guillen or Milton Bradley type of player. Ultimately, the best run clubs are in the top 7-8 clubs on the field but between 15-23 in payroll. I think KW would like to pare our payroll back down to the $75-90 range and still put out the same product on the field in terms of competitiveness.
  7. QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 01:03 PM) Joe Borchard is going to have a very good season this year, IMO. Jeremy Hermida is supposed to returning to starting sometime in May, but if Borchard keeps playing this well, he could get 250-300 at-bats this season.
  8. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 01:05 PM) OK, I know the guy's a career minor leaguer and I shouldn't expect anything from him besides catching pitches, but does anyone think there's a chance that Molina EVER gets a hit? Ozuna was calling himself safe as he crossed the bag...he's always having fun out there.
  9. QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 01:02 PM) But for Granderson and Guillen, he's been solid. The ball Granderson hit should have been caught. Molina makes Mark Johnson look like Victor Martinez.
  10. QUOTE(tealeafreaderii @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 01:01 PM) so are the easiest outs in baseball the eleven following a grand slam? Let's just hope we can score some runs in the next 2 innings before Zumaya comes in...
  11. QUOTE(zenryan @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 12:59 PM) for some reason the way Paulie reaches down to catch balls at first base annoys me. its like he just bends over and doesnt ever reach on low throws. he's no Ross Gload, but he's worked to become a slightly above average 1B by MLB standards
  12. QUOTE(Sonik22 @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 12:54 PM) Has Darin hit it out of the infield all year? lol He hit a couple of nice line drives into the outfield the final game of the Rangers' series. But he does have about 20 4-3 outs now. Well, that was 3 gift runs...should still be 4-0 now. Reminds me of the Saturday FOX game last year that Guillen and Inge f--ed up. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 12:56 PM) NSBB. I suppose she posted it in her profile pictures album. I don't have an account, but I guess she has some other good ones. She has a nice body...but. I feel like Paula Abdul commenting on Haley Scarnato. Oh, well. To each his own.
  13. QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 12:51 PM) In other news, Oliver Perez still owns the Braves. 5 K's through 3. Crede slowly moving out of the Bottom 10 for MLB OPS.

  15. QUOTE(Wanne @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 06:01 PM) Tell ya one thing about Conor Jackson though...he's absolutely an ABYSMAL first baseman. Apparently CY is heating up. He's back over .200 and seems to be gaining some confidence...I saw him rip a double last night agaisnt SF. I think he has 2 homers and 10 RBI's, which would be close to leading the White Sox.
  16. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 11:22 PM) Going to be hard to do that with a straight as an arrow 89 MPH fastball and a change he can't keep down in the zone while pitching half his games in Arlington. I still don't get why people didn't like that trade. Looked like a fleece from day 1 IMO. The only mistake this offseason was not getting more for Freddy, at least in regards to trade mistakes. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...e.2c700cbb.html Here's the game article from the Dallas Morning News. Brandon, as usual, doesn't seem too concerned.
  17. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 10:07 AM) Masset'll be starting, too. Cooper told him. Well, I hope Masset keeps on warming up with his reputed fastball. A lot of scouts seem to think that he is very similar to McCarthy, which is interesting. KW is replacing Buehrle with Danks and McCarthy with Masset... Aardsma has been perhaps the Thornton of 2007, although Sisco has done better than I would have expected as well, based on last year's debacle for the Royals.

Danks, 1.44 Contreras, 1.83 BULLPEN Aardsma, 0.71 MacDougal, 0.86 Sisco, 1.26 Jenks, 1.27 Masset, 1.45 Thornton, 1.71
  19. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Apr 18, 2007 -> 08:45 AM) ''Mentally, I didn't stay on,'' Garland said of the two homers. ''I gave up, and it showed.'' Someone called into the Royals' pre-game show yesterday and was going on and on about Charlie Lau and how George Brett never hit .300 in the minors and that the Royals should fire their hitting coach and hire Charlie Lau, Jr. and players like Tony Pena, Jr., Sweeney, Ryan Shealy, Buck, LaRue, etc., would be magically transformed in a similar fashion. The radio host made the comment that you don't teach great players how to be "gamers" or "winners," that it's either inside you or its not. The White Sox had that fire in 2005, and they're struggling to find that missing "it" that is so easy to lose, that mysterious chemistry, "grinderism," "small ball," "Ozzie Ball," well, whatever it was, they better relocate it soon, because the train's leaving the station and the Fat Lady is warming up behind Logan in the pen. 1) Utilize a framework to measure and project the relative cost of performance in the market for players, by position and pay grade. A) Pitchers (especially left-handed pitchers) B) Outfielders C) Catchers D) 3B/SS E) 2B F) 1B/DH (cheapest to replace) 2) Manage players as investment assets in the same way a money manager would manage a portfolio of investments 3) Be willing to force playover turnover to keep the roster young (inexpensive), even in the face of success 4) To build an inventory of the highest value assets, focus player selection and development resources on pitching, particularly left-handed pitching. from Diamond Dollars, Gennaro The acquisitions of Danks and Gio, along with the possibility of converting Sisco to starter, makes a lot more sense from this perspective. I think over time, many in baseball will wonder why the Royals gave up so quickly on Sisco...even though Ross Gload has already won some games for them with the bat.
  20. QUOTE(G&T @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 08:13 PM) Wow. Iguchi swings at the pitchout on the hit and run. That's funny. He had no choice, he had to protect the runner...or at least try...that's just the way it goes sometimes. Leyland outguessed Guillen, not a huge surprise. Ex White Sox 1st rounder Bobby Seay....Grilli....Hernandez (Roberto)....Guerrier, what is it with ex-Sox middle relievers in the Central?
  21. QUOTE(Capn12 @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) I'll take Pods in LF, BA in CF ANYDAY over this awesome leadoff hitter we have right now...but its still a lose-lose to me fathom, you know how that goes But I meant not just taking it easy over the game That ball definitely "GRINDED" through the infield. Okay, let's not blow our fifth lead in the 7th inning or later in our 15th game. That would be atrocious and we would be leading the majors in blown saves.
  22. QUOTE(Capn12 @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 08:05 PM) Some folks in here REALLY need to chill out already. Danks, 5.06 ERA (should be only 3.38 in actuality) McCarthy, 10.20 ERA
  23. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 08:03 PM) who's worse, aj or martinez? Well, Masset finally got his fastball up to 94. That's progress I guess.
  24. QUOTE(OfficerPat35 @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 08:02 PM) And is anyone else getting pissed when these moron fans cheer like wildfire on a popout to center? I swear, they do it again, Ill go to Detroit and pull a Cho. Idiots. That's a little TOO much there buddy, it's ONLY baseball.
  25. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 07:57 PM) It would have been more interesting if it were A.J. tagging from third on that play. Jesus, can we have Josh Fields tomorrow please?
