QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 07:30 PM) Gooch is a nice guy. So is Jamaal Tinsley. Not. Oops, I meant Sam Mack, who robbed a Burger King. -

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 07:23 PM) not Greg Walker's fault at all though Fields now a frigid 5 for 40 (.125) in his MLB career and looking like Joe Borchard numbers would be a great achievement for him this summer. Sutcliffe just dissected Javier Vazquez tipping his pitches, I hope someone with the White Sox organization tries to address it, because they're calling every one of his pitches and the location from the broadcast booth. -
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 10:31 AM) I think people are crazily overestimating Jermaine Dye's value. He can't run and his OBP is below .300. He's shown some power this year, but that's all he brings to the table right now. There are a lot of guys that will be on the market with at least that skill set, and maybe more. The Reds alone will likely be trading Dunn and/or Griffey both of whom are more attractive. The Sox won't get either Billingsley or Broxton straight-up for Dye. They might be able to get Betemit for Dye, but that's it. I think people are going to very disappointed in what the Sox firesale brings back. Dye has a much more attractive contract than either of those two guys, however. They would only have to pay $2.3-3.5 million for the best RFer in baseball last season.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) Could you imagine how huge it would be for this team if Luis Terrero were actually good at baseball? He's an incredibly talented all around baseball player, his defensive ability and power could be huge for this team if he could display it consistently. His .270/.372/.595/.967 line thus far this season is quite promising, being able to plug him into RF/CF next season would make KW's job so much easier and allow him greater flexibility so he can go after a high priced player like Ichiro to fill the leadoff spot. I think he needs to be in CF, and the bigger power numbers have to come from LF and RF. Terrero seems like he SHOULD be able to hit 20-30 homers if he was just left alone out there for an entire season, he's a very good defender, hustles and has a pretty good arm as well. I wouldn't mind seeing a Sweeney, Terrero, Ichiro outfield, you're giving up a lot of power, but Fields/Konerko/Thome/AJ and whoever we have at SS and 2B should be able to help compensate for that. Anything to get younger and more athletic. When you have better team speed, the team just seems to come to life, as opposed to the "corpseball" sleepwalking appearance we've had for the past 4-5 months of regular season play.

Well, even with those late 80's teams, you had players like Sosa, Bere, Alvarez, Thomas, Ventura, McDowell, Melido Perez, etc., to look forward to... With this organization right now, we'll be lucky if even two of our prospects make it. -

Players only Team meeting after the game

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/mariotti/42...T-jay10.article The White Sox have gotten so bad, so fast, that Mariotti is actually praising Ozzie (well, not for managing) and has no choice but to rip into KW. The funny thing is that the constant refrain from last year was "we were Soriano away from the playoffs" and now he's bringing out the "fluke" label. The 2005 White Sox were not a fluke...the Cardinals were last year, or the 2003 Marlins (although they had tons of pitching talent). You can't do much but laugh, though. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) KW's phone should be on fire right now, and he should be the one making the calls. His team is in freefall. I'm sure they will blame injuries when this dissappointing season comes to an end. Shocking how Erstad, Pods, Thome and Crede wound up on the DL. I would never of guessed it considering they have physical issues every season. Toby Hall goes down, and I know he's a huge part of the team. He's been back for a couple of weeks now and what does he have 2 starts? Ozuna gets hurt. I just hope when KW does the injury whine someone calls him out on it, and calls him out on his and his staff's player evaluation skills. Are you really expecting JR to call out Williams? That's not going to happen publicly, not at least until 2008, IF (big IF) then. You know exactly which writers will drill Williams, while the "beat" guys like Cowley, Gonzales, Gregor, etc., will let it go...

Just an idea(Sox and Padres)

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 06:18 PM) Just thinking. Would you guys be interested in a Jermaine Dye, Lance Broadway to San Diego for Scott Linebrink and Mike Cameron deal? Dye, Linebrink, and Cameron are all FA's next year, and at the very least we could work on extending Linebrink and let Cameron walk after playing CF for us this year. Offense wouldn't gain much, but the bullpen and defense should. Absolutely not. I'd much rather have Rowand than Cameron (can't believe I said that), but neither are long-term solutions for the White Sox IMO. Our main priority has to be finding starters at nearly every position on the field, players that are ideally in years 2, 3 or 4 of their major league careers. This trade MIGHT make us better in 2008, but it doesn't do much for 2009/10/11, when we're "transitioning" back into contention (hopefully). Some people like Broadway enough to make him our #5 prospect, others feel he will never be anything more than Matt Guerrier, and that's being optimistic. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 05:52 PM) I can't wait to see Uribe get to leadoff this inning. Nothing like having such a bad bench, you can't ph for one of the worst hitters in all of baseball. Owens can't play, and you're not going to use Hall there. That leaves Andy Gonzalez? -

Note to KW: Please stock up on more relievers who throw 92-94 MPH with no movement. Please send down Prinz and give anyone else a chance. -
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) It also helped contribute to the legendary corpseball offense. Those strikeout numbers are interesting. I'd be very interested to see pitches per at-bat rates for the players. It may not have been Greg Walker himself, but this organization has professed a "power or speed" approach to hitters. Greg Walker would be a big part of this plan. We don't need no stinking high-OBP guys around here! P/PA 2005/2006/2007 Dye 3.99 4.10 3.93 wrong direction Iguchi 3.84 3.91 3.92 improving Konerko 4.15 3.89 3.83 wrong direction Crede 3.61 3.67 3.70 improving Uribe 3.54 3.41 3.66 improving AJ 3.56 3.36 3.36 decreasing Pods 4.07 (06), 3.89 (05) Rowand 3.59 (2005) Everett 3.73 (2005) Thome 4.31 (2006), 4.11 (2007) If anything, our patience is increasing slightly, not decreasing, among our "regular" players. It just LOOKS worse than it really is, but the stats don't really back it up.

QUOTE(juddling @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 12:51 PM) During a pre-game interview today KW was asked about MacDougal and Aardsma and how long they were expected to be in AAA. KW replied that he's been getting 20-25 calls a day from other GM's asking the same question and if the Sox are ready to give up on these guys yet. Am i the only one who finds it really hard to believe that Kenny's phone is ringing off the hook about Mac and Aardsma???? Heck...as long as he's gonna strain credibility...he might as well tell us that Sisco has gotten all straightened out and is ready to help the big club. I think it also has to do with the fact that Percival is off the market, officially. I don't mind trading MacDougal if we could get back a AA/AAA position prospect (heck, even Justin Gathright would be better than Owens)...but I think KW needs to hold onto Aardsma for now, although his confidence is definitely close to shattered right now.

Strikeout numbers with the White Sox versus career averages Thome (3.35 career), 3.32 Sox=-0.03 Cintron (9.65 career), 7.44 Sox=-2.21 Dye (4.93 career), 3.88 Sox=-0.05 Rowand (5.41 career), 5.65 Phillies=-0.24 AJ (8.13 career), 7.43 Sox=-0.70 Mackowiak (4.04 career), 4.88 Sox=+0.84 Erstad (7.09 career), 5.28 Sox=-1.81 Uribe (5.20 career), 5.43 Sox=+0.23 The biggest differences are with AJ and Cintron (negative), Erstad (could Walker have THAT much of an effect in two months on a veteran player???). Mackowiak has actually improved his strikeout percentage pretty significantly with the Sox, as well as Uribe, although you could write that off to maturing. Another example... Konerko over his entire career=1 strikeout per 6.30 AB's PRE-WALKER=1 strikeout per 4.04 AB's Read what you would like into that, there are obviously many factors besides the hitting coach. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 12:27 PM) They did it a few years ago with Lee in the middle of his hitting streak several years ago. Didn't that approach end up getting Lee a $100 million contract?

Where KW is going with this team
caulfield12 replied to caulfield12's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 11:50 AM) The Gio love is delusional. No one in baseball outside the Sox think he's a future #2. Look at what the Rox got for Jennings and you know Williams made a bad trade for Garcia. Well, the other reason it's hard to compare is the fact that Garland's salary is twice that of Jennings, that's something else you have to take into consideration too. -
QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 10:54 AM) You have to think Owens basically was rated as better than BA in the system and better than Sweeny since Owens was the one brought up when Pods was hurt. I guess we should keep an open mind, but how many of our great prospects have done anything to contribute at the big league level? 1) We needed a leadoff hitter as our top priority with the injuries to Pods and Erstad...unless you think BA is the ideal leadoff guy 2) BA has a bad shoulder and is relegated to DH duties, and, since we have Mr. Jim Thome, that pretty much leaves him nowhere to play

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 10:46 AM) I like Gio....I just don't see him as a #2 pitcher in the majors as people are pencilling him in for around here. If he ends up being a #4 for the next 5 years, then I have no problem at all with that. And yes, Adam Russell is quite overrated by some also. His best opportunity to help this team is as a power righty set-up man. I do like saying my comments are ignorant though, as everything I said about Gio was relayed to me by about 5 minor league experts. We need to call him up to AAA, as pitching in a hitter's park will give him a better example of what it's like to pitch at the Cell. If he's around Jon Garland's numbers for the first five years of his MLB career, stays healthy, and keeps improving like Jon has, then I think anyone would be happy with that...and his K/IP ratio will definitely be much better too, which helps offset some of the HR numbers in the Cell. Garland would be one year or so ahead of him in age and development because of how he tore through the minors so fast, but Gio isn't so far behind and could be inserted into the rotation with a Buehrle trade. I'm not buying the Zito hype, but I don't see him as a 4/5 in the same way as Broadway, McCullough, Phillips, Haeger, etc. I think #3 is pretty realistic, but am also concerned with durability questions. The other benefit of our bullpen problems is we can keep bringing the youngsters up to get their feet wet coming out of the pen. I wouldn't be opposed to trading Floyd out for any of Masset, Bukvich or Prinz (I'll give Day a couple more weeks to seal his fate)...and I think we need to send Masset down and begin his career as a starter ASAP. That's where his most value is to this organization IMO.

Where KW is going with this team

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 08:48 AM) If Durham was a salary dump, why did KW pick up the biggest portion of his remaining contract that the rules allow? He thought Adkins was a stud. I'll rephrase that: 1) He knew that Durham was no longer in the picture and he wanted to see if Harris could be the starter, and he needed to open the position up 2) He thought the compensation system was going to be overhauled and no draft picks would be available in the following draft if he held onto, and he still would have needed to offer arbitration...although Durham certainly would have gone to another team IMO at a higher salary, as eventually happened with SFG 3) Harris was making the minimum 4) Jon Adkins that summer (2002) in Sacramento...6.03 ERA, 139 hits in 97 IP and a 1.77 WHIP. KW did think he was getting a "power arm" and a steal and "outscouted" himself, because Adkins and Felix Diaz threw about as hard as Danks or Barcelo after his surgery. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 09:30 AM) Is he a number 2? If so, and if Floyd is a top prospect, we got a steal. I've been waiting for Floyd to come up - why not? I can see leaving Gio down, but unless Floyd's hurt, why not? As for Floyd, of course Kenny wouldn't make a deal unless he thought it a good deal - and that would mean that he thought highly of Floyd. But Floyd was damaged goods and wouldn't command a top prospect price. Hopefully, he will he become a major league pitcher. So we have Rowand, Garcia and a prospect for Thome and Floyd. Assuming that we just don't re-sign MB and Dye, are we going to get a first round draft choice for each in compensation? I know compensation to some extent depends on whether they are class A FAs (which I assume they are, although some real mediocre ballplayers have been class As) (that's almost the deal, not quite as the years are different, but almost). Looks pretty reasonable, overall. Would look even better if Floyd could pitch major league baseball. I have a feeling we'll find out soon enough, and it might be before the ASB, because the Day, Prinz, Bukvich trio is going to need to be replaced at some point. AAArdsma just gave up a three run bomb the other night (I think it was a gamewinner or walkoff) so it's not going to be him until August or Sept. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 09:33 AM) Well considering how bad Garcia has looked this season at times (especially last night against the Royals), suddenly that trade doesn't look so bad right now does it? And quickman, has your opinion on Gio increased at all based on what he has done this season? I'm expecting a no answer here FWIW. Freddy Garcia (he of the $10 million contract) in his last three starts against the Royals, from Aug. 2nd of last year through last night 0-3 record 16.3 IP, 26 hits!, 15 ER, 5 BB, 11 K's 8.27 ERA That's enough of a reason why the Floyd/Gio deal was a good one, if we get anything out of either one at the major league level or via trade in return. -
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 07:04 PM) Of course. But big signing bonuses + Guillen's influence = something no one else can match. A deciding factor in Felix Hernandez signing with Seattle was the presence of Freddy Garcia. If we can't use our World Series championship or notable manager to draw in talent, in addition to enough funds available to sign talent, then it's a disgrace. I've already set the expectations of a legitimate #1 or #2 starter emerging by 2010 from Venezuela. It's time someone does their job down there. And none of this answers the question of where our VSL team went. If we're not willing to outspend the Detroit Tigers, this organization seriously has questionable, Cub-esque priorities, especially after winning one WS. I think a lot of it has to do with the unstable/unfriendly political situation down there. I lived in Colombia all last year, which is right next door, and I'm not sure you want to put your ballplayers through some of that stress...of course, the Uribe accusation/ransom/kidnapping type of situation can happen in any Latin country, and, if you believe the movies, Slovakia as well, lol.
