White Sox vs. Royals, 5/12/07 (W)

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 12, 2007 -> 08:42 PM) I keep hearing from the parrot in the booth that we are snapping out of this offensive slumber. Well he is right, we are hitting .232 over the last 7 days, that is statistically up from the pathetic .213 BA that we are having on the month of May so far. Dont worry, flip their baseball cards over and imagine them hitting. Its what our coaching staff does. Maybe if we collectively wish they might hit a ball. Sisco is down from 94-96 to 92 now. I know he's supposed to have more control, but he doesn't get much movement with that pitch. Maybe Jim Morris from The Rookie is still available. That was a gutsy 3-2 pitch by Sisco. Hopefully he won't walk the next guy. And Ozzie's allowing Sisco to face a righthander...??? -

QUOTE(mr_genius @ May 12, 2007 -> 08:40 PM) the top of lineup is weak, and thats being really generous. We're last in runs scored in the AL over the last 106 games. This comes as no surprise, especially with Thome out. -

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 12, 2007 -> 08:37 PM) People are hitting over 300 against him. Meanwhile, we are getting pitch by pitch radar gun reports of how hard Grienke is throwing by Hawk. I think Greinke might end up becoming the Royals' closer. Dotel has always been shaky since his injury problems, and Soria's best role is set-up. -

QUOTE(danman31 @ May 12, 2007 -> 08:35 PM) I feel a little better after looking at Alex Gordon's stats. .164 with 37 strikeouts in 110 at bats. At least he walks (has 13), but damn, the Royals rushed him. Those are sub Anderson numbers. Imagine how much we would hate Gordon on this board? He has 8 HBP, which is why his OBP hovers around .300. Thome 25 walks in 20 something games Rest of team 90 walks in 32 games The Royals tried to hand us four wins in a row. I guess it's baseball karma that we hand back at least one of those four games. I think Bell will go to Soria, but I would seriously consider leaving Greinke in to close it out. -

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ May 12, 2007 -> 08:10 PM) Wow. Javy looks like a BADASS with those shades on. So does Danks. Unfortunately, they look much better than Dye, Konerko, Erstad, Crede and Iguchi. If we had Dontrelle Willis, he might be DHing on this team. Masset still in the 90-93 MPH range on his FB. -

QUOTE(Capn12 @ May 12, 2007 -> 08:02 PM) Hey!! Theres that guy in our lineup with a proper approach at the plate! Veterans, stop and watch how Sweeney goes about things at the plate please. Unfortunately, our best hitter right now is a 22 year-old. Greinke had as much life on his pitches as I've seen this year. In the 17-3 game drubbing the other day, he actually admitted he walked a batter intentionally because he was afraid of giving up a grand slam to a particular hitter. Big difference tonight. Looks like their plan is Greinke for two innings, maybe Gobble if needed, then Soria. -

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ May 12, 2007 -> 07:34 PM) Haha, a good manager in Buddy Bell. The same guy who throws Gil Meche 115+ pitches in every start. Good way to kill you're $55 million pitcher! Have you seen the Royals' bullpen? It's clearly the worst in the big leagues. You can't blame him, as Hawk said, rock and a hard place...it's not fair to Meche that he lose every win he's earned when he leaves the game. -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 12, 2007 -> 07:33 PM) Sweeney Ozzie hates young guys and doesn't play them... Hawk, I would be happy with 18-22 homers, let's not get carried away with projections of 25-30 yet. -

QUOTE(mr_genius @ May 12, 2007 -> 07:04 PM) i never saw his swing in AAA or anything like that. so all i can go by is past prospects and their swings and sweeny's. When crede first came up, looppy swing; anderson, looopy swing; borchard, delux slow loopy swing; ect. i'm not saying Walker is a good hitting coach or anything, just bringing up an observation. Records versus AL Central DET 5-4 (7-2 versus KC) CLE 6-2 (hasn't played KC yet) CHW 7-8 (3-0 versus KC) MINN 4-8 (2-3 versus KC) Based on that alone, you'd have to say CLE is the best team in the division, at least through the first 20-25% of the season. Minnesota looks to be in big trouble. -
QUOTE(BearSox @ May 12, 2007 -> 01:18 AM) I still like Broadway as a prospect. Better then McCulloch anyway. Broadway might not have the best fastball, but he is working on a 2 seemer similar to Garland's with the sinking action, and he has always had a good curve. He also has a decent change, correct? His biggest problem to me seems to be his control. He might never be a stud, but he could be a serviceable 4-5 guy at least. Maybe even a bullpen guy? Upside, #4 (although he's never thrown 92-94 MPH like Garland)...Matt Guerrier is the best guess....or a career minor leaguer.

QUOTE(BearSox @ May 12, 2007 -> 05:12 PM) I thought about doing today, but I'm bad mojo. I think we're ready to platoon Erstad/Terrero and Sweeney should be playing every day, except for against the toughest lefties. He's too young to be a platoon player, and he hits righties (at least this year) worse than lefties statistically (not sure about historically). -
In two more days, fire sale talk will pick up

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ May 11, 2007 -> 10:22 PM) May 11, 2007 Rumor control: In a May 6 column by a national baseball writer for the Boston Globe, the idea was postulated concerning Mark Buehrle being part of some White Sox purge at the non-waiver trade deadline if the team fell out of contention. After all, Buehrle could leave in the offseason through free agency. But on Friday, Williams scoffed at the notion that he would approach the White Sox with any other idea aside from making this group stronger. "If I'm ever told to think in different terms, I don't know, it's going to be a little difficult," Williams said of being told to trade off important pieces of his squad. "I've always thought of adding to the puzzle, not taking away from the puzzle. "We've positioned ourselves to where if something is missing or we have another injury and we have to go out in the market, we're in the position with some of the things we did last offseason to go ahead and be a player in whatever the market is at that point." Baseball's current parity leaves Williams believing trades involving significant pitching or impact position players are not in the offing. Seems kind of contradictory, the White Sox are in a position to do something big (supposedly) but nothing big is likely to happen... QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ May 10, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) No, two days ago you said "In two more days fire sale talk will pick up." Maybe in two more days, unless they start showing some positive signs. If you predicted the White Sox were going to have a 3.69 team ERA at this point in the season, I'd like to see where that appears. The fact of the matter is we still are far from a playoff team. If not for the Royals handing us 3 games, our record could easily be 2 or 4 games under .500. I think we can survive without Pods, but we need contributions from Thome and Hall for this offense to get corrected or there will be no way for us to keep up with DET and CLE, or the Yankees and Red Sox, for that matter. -
QUOTE(diegotony06 @ May 11, 2007 -> 10:17 PM) The pitching has been unbelievable. Keep it going tomorrow Mark!!! I'd rather win pitchers duals, than slugfests!! Pretty amazing Sizemore is only .252/5/15. Can't imagine that line-up being much more dangerous. Garko just homered to tie it out in Oakland, 1-1 in the top of the 6th. Blanton and Sabathia locked in another pitcher's duel, as would be expected. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 11, 2007 -> 10:20 PM) I could probably hold our offense to 4 runs over 7 innings if I threw lefty (and we get another one Sunday, Javy better toss a shutout) but they all count. Elarton has been ok against us in his career, so hopefully we bring the bats for once tomorrow (I'd assume he'll be rusty, first start all year). De La Rosa has been the second best starter after Meche, but he was really roughed up this week and Greinke went to the pen. Amazing the Royals managed to give up 17 runs to a weak-hitting A's team yesterday. But a win's a win.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 11, 2007 -> 10:00 PM) Birmingham won a very well pitched game 2-1 (which was inevitable after last nights 12-11 pitching abomination). Wes Whisler has a nice outing to get his first win (7 IP, 5 hits, 2 walks, 6 k's, 1 run) and Oneli got a scoreless 2 inning save. Getz 2 for 4 with 2 singles, Lucy 0 for 3. Collaro hit a homer to tie it and it was won on the always exciting run scoring double play. (Charlotte piled on late to win 7-1, btw). W-S won 12-2. The big lefty Clayton Richard threw 6 scoreless (4 hits, 2 walks, 6 k's) for the win, he's pitched pretty well. Omogrosso threw a perfect 9th with 2 k's. Cunningham was 1 for 6 with 2 k's, but also had a 2 run homer. Schnurstein was really good again, 3 for 6 with a double and solo homer. Roberts was 4 for 6 with a homer and 3 RBI. Kanny won 6-0. De Los Santos with 6 scoreless (2 hits, no walks, 8 k's) to go to 2-1 with a 1.76. He's allowed 12 hits (no homers) in 30.2 IP, with 15 walks and 33 k's (nice to see the good control tonight). Pretty incredible splits. Carter was 1 for 3 with a walk, RBI double, strikeout, and run. Shelby led off and was in CF again, 0 for 4 with a walk and run scored. Ugh. Great pitched night for every team in the organization tonight, wow (5 teams, 5 runs allowed). As for Broadway, he's still young, has good control, and is putting up a very good ERA in a hitters paradise. He seems like trade bait to me. Is Schnurstein viewed by anyone as more of a prospect than, say, Casey Rogowski? Seems like he has been in the low minors for five years. I'm still mystified why we didn't take Garza over Broadway...well, Broadway probably carries a little more "cache" than we think as a former first rounder, that's worth a little premium I guess. Would like to see them clear Phillips, Malone, Rogowski and Lopez from the organization and move some of the younger prospects up...would also like to see Andy Gonzalez get a chance to take Cintron's spot, but we'll have to wait until 2008 for that move.

QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:57 PM) well we all know how the sox look when they face lhp. a wins a win! Team ERA down to 3.69, good for 4th in the AL. 2005=3.61 Scoring 3.91 runs per game in 2007 (13th in AL) Scored 4.57 runs per game in 2005 (9th in AL)

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:36 PM) Dye really needs to have tomorrow off. In fact, a few days off would't hurt. In fact, he might look good in a Tampa Bay uniform or even an Expos uniform when Thome comes back. By blow outs are much easier on the nerves, then always having the game come down to the last out. We blew everyone out April-June of 2006, and we didn't learn how to win close games. This approach (our ERA now is around 3.70, only about 1/10th behind our pace in 2005) is much better than relying on offense, because if we can play .500 with this schedule (we've played better on the road than home too, another good sign) and without Thome and Pods and Hall, we can't help but be a much better team from June on. We played a ton of 1-2 run games in 05 and ended up on the winning side more often than not. I still think Cleveland and Detroit are better teams, but it should at least be interesting.

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:35 PM) Dye really needs to have tomorrow off. In fact, a few days off would't hurt. In fact, he might look good in a Tampa Bay uniform or even an Expos uniform when Thome comes back. So you want the outfield to be Erstad, Sweeney and Terrero/Mack/Ozuna? No thanks. We might as well get rid of Konerko and Crede with this theory...he'll come around, and he's had some huge homers early this season, despite his low average.

QUOTE(diegotony06 @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:33 PM) Thorton is more than just a lefty specialist. I'm just sayin he was throwin the ball good. I would have left him in. Way to go Bobby!! Ummm, no. He's not even a LH specialist this year, lefties are hitting well over .300 against him, which is his primary job. He showed some good velocity, but Jenks and Thornton both throw too straight to get away with it if the location's bad.
-
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:28 PM) It almost looks like he caught some disease and forgot how to play baseball. He reminds me of Harold Baines in his last half year before he retired. He truly looks like a corpse out there. Konerko and Crede still suck. Royals figuring every way possible to play just bad enough to beat themselves every game so far against us. They suck more.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:25 PM) Dye could not be screwing over this team any more than he currently has. And in about every conceivable way. His outfield speed is embarrassing, and his lack of offense is costing everyone from the team down to the money he'll receive next season. Hell, add in the fact if he doesn't rebound respectably (>.250avg, 70+rbis, 20+HRs) he'll cost the White Sox type A compensation. He may hurt his value midseason if the Sox are out of contention, as well. Talk about a worst case scenario with a player. This is it. Well, the worst-case would have been if KW tore up this year's contract and signed him for $45 million over 3 years before the season started. Sweeney and Mackowiak should both be playing the corners at this point.
-
QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:24 PM) I hope we hold em to 2 runs here Teahen 3 for 5 versus Thornton, lefties hitting better than .300 as well...interesting.
-
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:21 PM) Get Jon out. Now Thornton against Teahen....then Jenks versus Sweeney, HOPEFULLY. I'm having a flashback to the game Sweeney miraculously hit into a Double Play with the bases loaded to end the game.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:17 PM) That was the dumbest slide attempt I have seen a sox player in a long time. Wow. You try to sneak your foot in where the catchers foot is. Whoopsie, the catcher was up the line a bit. The plate was 3 feet on the other side. He just caught his left knee on Buck's left foot...one of the few times that a headfirst slide would have scored easily. 7 assists for Teahen on the year. Of course, German doubles to start the inning. Nothing is ever easy for the White Sox. Why isn't Mackowiak in the game? Geez.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 11, 2007 -> 09:14 PM) Remember the numbers on the back of the card don't lie /Greg Walker Turns Paul Konerkos card, ha look 2003 .234. How can he have hit .234 in the middle of hitting good all his career. How does that happen. Peralta has the flattest slider that I have seen taken for a strike. How did the Tigers figure out the trick to beating Santana? It's kind of weird to cheer for Santana and Twins to beat the Tigers at home... That sucks...Ozuna gets thrown out 5% of the time on that play.
