“Opportunity...I wanted to be with a team that felt like — not necessarily appreciate but know what I can do and believe I can contribute on a daily basis and that’s what it felt like here.” Dalbec "It kind of reminds me a little bit of when I was coming up with Atlanta. We’ll got into spring with 10-12 capable starters fighting for five spots. It’s bringing back that healthy competition. "Galloween"...no way Getz would allow that when we supposedly kicked out all the bad apples from 2021-2023 teams. Maybe Jose Quintana...depending on price. -
Totally forgot about Dalbec and Omar when compiling my "oldest/cheapest" possible list...you can always do a poll, not sure how much interest there would be

Chasing Records — 121 losses, modern MLB record
caulfield12 replied to Paulie4Pres's topic in Pale Hose Talk
"Their (1962 Mets) team batting average, team earned run average (ERA), and team fielding percentage were all the worst in the major leagues that season. Despite the team's terrible performance, fans came out in droves. Their 1962 season attendance of 922,530 was good enough for sixth in the National League." So the big differences were the 1962 Mets were an expansion team and actually had quite solid fan support (not by today's numbers of course) for such a terrible team. https://www.mlb.com/news/1962-mets-losing-record-being-challenged-by-2024-white-sox Most of the Mets' players and coaching staff from 1962 fondly reminisced about their experiences...they weren't "fighting with the home crowd" the last 6 weeks as some Sox fans started rooting for losses, which undoubtedly brought those players together, just for their own psychological well-being's sake. The top salary on the team was reportedly $30,000. "All I ask is that you bust your heiny on that field." - Casey Stengel 1962 New York Mets Salaries Frank Thomas $30,000.00 Richie Ashburn $29,000.00 Clem Labine $20,000.00 Jay Hook $13,500.00 Joe Ginsberg $13,000.00 Bobby Gene Smith $10,500.00 Joe Christopher $6,500.00 Ed Kranepool $5,500.00 -

Connor Joe is one possibility for that DH vacancy, though he’s ideally a platoon partner with Jason Heyward in left field. Non-roster options like Gavin Sheets and Mike Brosseau will get a shot, as will prospect Tirso Ornelas. “Those are good guys that we feel like have a chance to surprise a little bit,” Preller said of his DH options. “But we’re going to continue to look to see if we can add to the offense as well in the next couple weeks.” AJ Casavell, Padres' beat

Bregman to Red Sox. 3 years/120 million
caulfield12 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Kristian Campbell’s chances of making the Opening Day roster seemed good when he arrived in Fort Myers earlier this month. They lessened significantly Wednesday, quite obviously. Campbell’s versatility (he played four different positions in 2024) still makes it possible he’s with the Red Sox in late March. But the Bregman addition will allow them to proceed with caution when it comes to Campbell, who while checking every box in the minors so far, has just 601 plate appearances as a professional. Expect Campbell — who was expected to compete at second base throughout camp before the Bregman addition — to get reps in different spots in spring training. There’s a real path to playing time in left field if Ceddanne Rafaela struggles and Jarren Duran plays center, though Roman Anthony’s existence further complicates things. Bregman’s deal is further proof of Boston’s organizational desire to not have its top prospects feel like they have to carry the 2025 team. And the structure of it, on what could very well be a high-dollar one-year deal — doesn’t block Campbell in the long-term. https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/02/how-alex-bregman-red-sox-signing-impacts-kristian-campbell-rafael-devers-others.html -
Bregman to Red Sox. 3 years/120 million
caulfield12 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It’s easy to see the Red Sox’s vision for plenty of doubles and pull-side homers. In fact, in 21 career games at Fenway, Bregman is slashing .375/.490/.750 with nine doubles, seven homers and 15 RBI. His 1.240 OPS at Fenway is his highest at any ballpark (minimum 20 games). The Red Sox came into this offseason looking to be part of the Juan Soto sweepstakes. Since then, they have pivoted and put together one of the more complete lineups in baseball. Bregman’s addition gives Boston the big right-handed bat they’d been seeking since the beginning of the winter, and he can slot in with Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers at the top of the lineup, providing Devers plenty of protection. Defensively, Bregman has been a third baseman his entire career, but according to reports, he will shift to second base with the Red Sox, allowing Devers to stay at third, at least for the time being. Bregman has appeared at second in his big-league career, but not since 2018. https://sports.yahoo.com/alex-bregmans-new-deal-puts-the-cherry-on-top-of-a-big-offseason-for-the-red-sox-183951885.html -
Guardians' bullpen just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Weren't Clase and Cade Smith basically the two most valuable relievers in the AL last year? And then they're adding to it? It's a Hahn 2020-21 strategy, except not spending themselves into a quandary on too many expensive/over-priced veterans. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/overview/_/year/2025 Guardians have now cleared $80 million in payroll...25th https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/cash/_/year/2025/sort/cash_total Then there's a HUGE $25 million payroll gap up to the Cincinnati Reds (24th) at $106.6 million Only six teams remaining with payrolls under $100 million (Oakland is expected to eventually get up to $105 million in the next year) CLE, TB, PITT, OAK, CHW, MIA

https://www.mlb.com/player/dick-allen-110157 It's probably more accurate to say the equivalent of 6 1/2 seasons. I don't know what would be the justification for going in as a member of the White (besides the MVP season in a Sox jersey) if he hadn't at least played MORE games in a Sox than Phillies jersey. Thought I saw where he'd played 9 years in Chicago, but that was OBVIOUSLY WAY WAY OFF. It's my mistake because I read an article about his career and hadn't realized he finished in 1975 and 1976 in Philly...he even had an 826 OPS at the age of 34 with them and finished with a 721 OPS at age 35 (OAK).

Kenta Maeda was never going to be in their post-season pitching plans...they just wanted to see what they had for 2025, although that probably wasn't the greatest possible measuring stick, a team desperate for avoid the all-time losses record coming into the weekend. 1. Drew Burress, OF -- Georgia Tech HOMETOWN: Perry, Georgia HEIGHT: 5-9 WEIGHT: 184 BAT/THROW: R-R Big time favorite of Georgia area guys due to an advanced feel for hitting, as well as finding the barrel, Burress is one of the more beloved recruits in Georgia Tech history. Explosive hips and big bat speed help Burress generate power well beyond what you might expect from a smaller frame. Athletic, runs well and has plenty of arm for center field. Swing can get uppercut heavy when he really tries to lift the ball, but he's hit at every stop. Burress has some drift in his swing and inconsistencies in terms of direction depending on where the pitch is. He'll step in the bucket at times despite loading from an open stance. It's an oddity in terms of conventionalism at the plate, but Burress has been the most impactful player in the 2026 class and it isn't terribly close. The raw power is legit and so are the tools. Until the quirks in his swing prove to be an issue, there's little reason to question his operation. It'll just come down to how he performs over the course of the next three years and how scouts buy into the operation. It's without question, comfortably, first round talent. https://futurestarsseries.com/2026-mlb-draft-top-100-college-prospects/

September proved to be their best month of the season as they went 10–15 and also had a record of 5–1 in their last 6 games, with their only loss coming from the aforementioned Tigers game. That would be 65-97 if they maintained that pace for AN ENTIRE SEASON. Of course, the Tigers didn't actually field competitive line-ups those last couple of games (after they clinched post-season positioning on FRI). -
"The bullpen projects… worse. Indeed, this is the worst unit that ZiPS has ever projected, but I’m not inclined to rag on a dozen org guys on a terrible team. Of the projected relief corps, Prelander Berroais probably the name to watch — though you don’t have to watch the White Sox, I promise — as his plus fastball and slider at least could be good. Problem is, he’s definitely far more of a thrower than a pitcher at this point; his pitches often intersect with the strike zone purely by chance." Thought this should be revisited when we hear rosy forecasts. https://www.si.com/fannation/mlb/fastball/history/chicago-white-sox-bullpen-given-historically-poor-projection-in-2025-by-fangraphs

👍👍👍 You better save your energy for attacking the Nick Pivetta signing, KBO signing...the general worthiness of the Heyward/Connor Joe platoon, etc. If that fails, you can go after Machado's deal, Bogaerts' deal or Cronenworth's deal (which doesn't even seem ALL that terrible after watching the money the Dodgers are throwing around for guys like Edman). Or threatening Dylan Cease or Michael King trades to various teams.

Palka 1 HR per 17.3 career at-bats (29/501) Gallo 1 HR per 13.3 career at-bats (208/2869) Gallo with a 775 career OPS and a .319 career OBP...well, PALKA never came CLOSE to winning ONE Gold Glove, let alone TWO. But okay. Well, that would have been the best hitter on the White Sox last year. Feel like I've typed that sentence numerous times...if only Gallo were STILL that player, we might actually have something. Nomar Shamir Mazara Jiminián (born April 26, 1995) is a Dominican professional baseball right fielder for the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Mexican League. Still available. Adam Eaton's retired. https://www.mlb.com/player/luis-gonzalez-670768 Last played in 2022...listed most recently with the Yankees. https://www.thebaseballcube.com/content/player/194793/ Ended up at AAA with Scranton Wilkes-Barre/NYY. https://www.mlb.com/player/alex-call-669743 Still playing for the Nationals at age 30. -
Adisyn Coffey...and don't forget Schoenle! You must have Addison Russell/Street/Wrigley on the brain Trey McGough sounds like either an Irish golfer or an offensive lineman. Carela, Bush and Eder were the guys picked by FutureSox podcasters to be traded due to "too much depth." We shall see.

Dick was an exceptional two-sport star at Wampum High School in western Pennsylvania. He starred on state championship basketball teams. But his ability to hit a baseball overshadowed his hoop skills. Baseball scouts began following Dick as a junior. Scouts in those days doubled as salesmen. Era Allen served as her son’s negotiator. She was most comfortable with a 66-year-old Phillies scout, John Ogden. Upon graduating from in 1960, Allen signed a pro baseball contract that included a $60,000 bonus. Ogden also signed Dick’s older brother, Hank (1960) and young brother, Ron (1964). Each played in the Majors. Hank was a teammate when Dick made his pro debut, an 18-year-old shortstop with the Elmira Pioneers of the Class D New York-Penn League. Dick joined the team in Geneva and homered in his first game. A sign of things to come. After 1969 season, the Phillies traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals. He also played for the Dodgers and White Sox (1972 AL MVP). His 15-year career ended in Oakland in 1977. 7 All-Star teams, 351 home runs, .292 average. In today’s metrics his 165 OPS+ from 1964-73 led the Majors, better than Hank Aaron, Harmon Killebrew and Willie McCovey. For a stretch of 11 seasons (1964 through 1974), he had a .940 OPS, second only to Hank Aaron’s .941. Ten years after his 529-foot home run, No. 15 returned to the Phillies. He singled in his first at-bat, May 14, 1975, against the Cincinnati Reds at Veterans Stadium. Dick drew a standing ovation from the 30,908 fans. The past was forgotten. With Allen in the lineup, the Phillies won the NL East in 1976, ending a 26-year postseason drought. https://www.mlb.com/news/phillies-alumni-hall-of-famer-dick-allen To be totally fair, his Pennsylvania roots run REALLY deep. You also have to consider his career coming "full circle" and ending up playing for the Phillies in 1976 and helping them to the post-season.

Allen's family has decided that he will wear a Philadelphia Phillies cap on his plaque, honoring the team that gave him his first professional contract in 1960. The Pennsylvania native made his MLB debut with the Phillies in 1963, then won NL Rookie of the Year in 1964. He remained in Philadelphia through the end of the 1969 season, at which point he demanded a trade and got sent to the St. Louis Cardinals. 6 years in Philly versus 9 with the White Sox, lol... https://www.si.com/fannation/mlb/fastball/news/former-chicago-white-sox-mvp-winner-dick-allen-to-wear-philadelphia-phillies-cap-on-hall-of-fame-plaque-class-of-2025-classic-era-committee-01jkrjp82q71
