  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 15, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) Without a 1st rounder I can't see what the Bears have to give up that would remotely interest Denver. Agreed. If we acquire Marshall, it's not going to be by trade. We'd have to hope he's just straight-up released.
  2. QUOTE (beautox @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 11:11 PM) Honestly I'm fine with it, its far tougher for a kid being signed for big $ out of the DR or Venezuela, than him, think of the culture shock those kids endure. your making it sound like his parents are just in it for the money, im sure its a mitigating circumstance but if i was his age and had his skills, i would want to turn pro early too. i love how we're in awe of latin 16 and 18 year old prospects but the moment an American kid wants to get into the game as quickly as possible we look down upon it. No, I wasn't. I said that could be one of the reasons. But still, the parents are being dumb in this decision. He's still a child and under their legal guardian, and they should have the say in whether he stays in high school or not - and they shouldn't let him leave early. These hispanic kids that come up at that young of an age tend to play in one of the DSL leagues (keeping them in their comfort zone) before moving up the minor league ladder, and they have likely played with players older than them in their native countries, whereas Harper is used to playing with a bunch of 16, 17 year old kids. I think there's a difference.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 07:38 PM) Like, tidal waves cataclysmic? Oh, like Deep Impact. And I love Armageddon. I don't care how unrealistic it is.
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 06:57 PM) Hopefully, we're looking at back to back strong drafts. No kidding. The 2008 draft really has to give you confidence that our scouts and the way we approach our minor league system have improved a lot since Kenny decided to make some changes. And if we can find a couple Dan Hundson's/Dexter Carter's in this draft (Morgado? Buch?) as well as an impact bat (whether it's Mitchell, Thompson, Goodwin if he signs, though unlikely), this draft will be pretty stellar.
  5. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 04:45 PM) There should be a rule against this kind of stuff, you should have to be 18 to enter the draft. Obviously his parents are pushing this too. I hope he becomes the next Marinovich or Brien Taylor. I don't hope he will, but I'm afraid trying to play minor league baseball at 17 with a bunch of 20/21 year olds might be a little overwhelming. And that could cause him to not live up to his potential. His parents make me sick whether it's their idea or his to go pro early. If it's their idea, shame on them for using their son to get a big payday and make him miss out on 2 great years of his life. You're only a kid once. But, if this is mainly his idea, it's their job to step up and not let their son leave high school after 2 years. They should protect him from turning pro at such a young age and going into the world of grown men.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 12:29 PM) YouTube has a movies section now. http://www.youtube.com/movies Some of the cheesiest movies that I've ever seen. Wow, some of those are pretty bad... But, I just watched Cliffhanger thanks to you posting that link, lol.
  7. Kind of cool if there are any fans that are so allergic to peanuts that just being around them will make them have a reaction (there are people like that). This way they'll get to go to a game they may not otherwise be able to... But yeah, I can't imagine it really affects that many people in Birmingham. Regardless, a nice gesture by the Barons.
  8. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 06:35 PM) Ditto... I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Anyway, watching UVA-LSU right now. Go Mitchell! But go UVA! Well, s***... LSU won and Mitchell probably had the worst game of any LSU batter. I got the worst of both worlds.
  9. QUOTE (3E8 @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 06:57 PM) He's batted leadoff, not just at the bottom of the order. Against a tough lefty on the mound he may bat lower I stand corrected. I guess I should have looked that up before taking another person's word for it (in another thread somewhere). He was the leadoff hitter in 21 games this year.
  10. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 02:37 PM) I really thought this was going to be a life changing thread for J4L...but nope he is just hungry. and drunk?
  11. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 12:49 PM) How does the halves system work again? So if Birmingham clinches the 1st half, are they in the playoffs for sure? Also, do all levels have the halves system? Yes, if the Barons win the 1st half, they're automatically in the playoffs. And no, not all levels use the half system. AAA doesn't and one of the AA leagues doesn't (Eastern League, I believe). Not sure about some of the A-/A+ leagues.
  12. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 06:08 PM) Batting 7th(?) and in RF. Yeah, that's where he's been batting all year if I'm not mistaken. Seems a little odd that their highest draft pick hits so low, but if they're winning, I guess that's all that matters as far as LSU is concerned.
  13. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) I think Rudy was the only movie that ever made me cry. Ditto... I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Anyway, watching UVA-LSU right now. Go Mitchell! But go UVA!
  14. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 03:14 PM) I'm glad we have Cutler cause otherwise we'd see the Bears and Vick in the same sentence (from reporters, not necessarily that the Bears front office would go after him). I'd love Vick on the Bears. We could sign him to a cheap 1 year deal (unless someone wants to give him more), and use him in our version of the Wildcat and maybe only play him 5-10 plays a game. But, he would be extremely effective in that small of a workload. Also, on the local radio in Memphis, they had some NFL analyst on a couple weeks ago and he mentioned Chicago as one of the possible destinations for Vick. I'm sure it's just speculation on his part, but I kinda liked hearing us mentioned anyway.
  15. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 02:44 AM) His other stats do look sexy... .364, 16 HR, 65 RBI, and 19/24 in SB - and remember that all this is coming out of the leadoff spot.
  16. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 02:43 AM) Everytime I drive by that place, there's some jackass out in front pretending to play guitar and dancing around. Oddly enough, while seeing that guy infuriates me, I get a craving for pizza. I see the same thing everyday driving home from work. And yes, the crazy bread there is pretty damn good, but their pizza is like 4th or 5th on my list when ordering from somewhere.
  17. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 12:55 AM) They signed Danks and Upchurch last year so there is certainly hope. My thoughts exactly. Upchurch was supposedly a pretty tough sign after we got him in the 12th round, but we got it done. I'm not sure Goodwin is going to happen, but for some reason I feel good about locking up Dane Williams.
  18. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 09:07 PM) This isn't a question but.... We should try and get more interviews with some of the draftees and even minor leaguers. I've been searching, and most of them have facebooks, so I assume you could maybe set up a few interviews on there with the players. It's not a bad idea. Justin Cassel was pretty helpful in a writeup I did right after we drafted him, so facebook can be a good source. But, I know I messaged Shelby about an interview right after we drafted him and got no response, so it may not always work. Worth a shot, though, I guess.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) What are you talking about? Ozzie's job is to GET THE MOST OUT OF HIS PLAYERS. Why would he start attacking Beckham after 2 weeks of being in the majors? You are acting like Beckham is the one who made the call to be promoted to MLB. The point is that Beckham for better or for worse is part of the FUTURE of the White Sox. If he does not get regular consistent AB's it is going to be very hard for him to develop properly. Which is why if the Sox decided to promote him from the minors to the majors, it is Ozzie's job to make sure that he develops properly. That means playing him even if he is struggling because right now Beckham should be worrying about developing and not producing. This isnt about babying our players, Beckham has moved through the minors extremely fast, the exact opposite of babying. This is instead about putting our players in a POSITION TO SUCCEED as opposed to a POSITION TO FAIL. Even the most optimistic Beckham fan couldnt imagine that he could be counted on to produce this year. All you could hope is that it helped him develop faster for the future. Which is why Ozzie is being absurd, he should be protecting Beckham and tempering fans expectations. Would he rather that people booed Beckham and had unreasonable expectations for a rookie? Ive never seen a manager complain about fans being to supportive. Part of me thinks Ozzie doesnt like playing second fiddle to anyone. Fantastic post. I think your last sentence is really very true. I've always been a huge fan of Ozzie and have defended him over the last few years for the dumb things he has said (even with his Mariotti is a "f**" thing - i always thought that was blown out of proportion). And after the World Series year, I especially felt like I'd never want another manager on this team except for Ozzie (as long as Ozzie still wanted to do the job). Unfortunately, in the last few weeks or so, I've begun to feel that if Ozzie doesn't make a few personal changes to the way he handles young players (particularly highly touted ones), Kenny may need to consider finding a new manager. We're about to start a youth movement, whether he likes it or not, and if he can't change, then we don't need his negative bulls*** around or else nobody is going to play well. Unfortunately, I don't think Ozzie can change. I think he'd rather get fired than change how he does things, which makes me feel it could be a realistic possibility of seeing him go in the next year or two. Also, some might say that "so and so" is a mental midget if he can't handle what Ozzie is saying, but I say that's bull. Even the cockiest/most confident of players won't play well if their manager is constantly saying things to downplay/criticize them. That's a bad way of managing, but even worse that he does this stuff in public so that millions of people can read about it. Keep it in the clubhouse, Ozzie - especially with the new guys. It would be one thing if Konerko was batting .200 going into mid-June, then I'd be okay if he called him out publicly. But saying things about new guys needing to produce immediately or their ass will be on a plane back to Charlotte is ridiculous. Most rookies aren't going to come in and light the world on fire. I don't know why he doesn't seem to understand that.
  20. Of the above choices, I was never really that high on Escobar, so he can't really be a disappointment for me. Gilmore was definitely disappointing at first, but has really kicked it into gear in the last few weeks. He has to be batting well over .300 now in his last 3 weeks or so, so I think that takes him out of contention for this "honor." Morel was overdrafted and shouldn't have had such big expectations, I don't think. I liked him a bit coming into the season and thought he'd hit better than he has, but at least he's still hitting for some power even if he's not making as much contact as we'd like. So, I guess I'd go with Shelby even though I think he still has plenty of time to redeem his slow start. One definite bright spot in Shelby's season so far is that in only 205 AB's, he's surpassed his BB total from last year. At this rate, he'll more than double his normal walk rate by the end of the season, which is great improvement. And I absolutely believe he'll raise his average quite a bit before it's all said and done this season. Though, as of June 12, I guess I'd go with Shelby as my most disappointing just b/c of the much higher expectations I had for him than the others listed. Oh, and if Marquez was part of the poll, I would have chosen him. But, I just tried to give my answer regarding the choices given.
  21. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) <!--quoteo(post=1916783:date=Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:17 AM:name=BobDylan)-->QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:17 AM) <!--quotec-->Language NSFW "Who puts a Manny being Manny bug in this game?" That was freaking hilarious... however, it saddens me to know it's because of that piece of crap game that we no longer have MVP baseball. Also, awesome sig by the way. Yeah, definitely the funniest part of the video... Though I was still cracking up the whole time.
  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 07:35 PM) See, "mild" in Memphis in June is a good thing. "Mild" in Chicago in June means crappy. Oh, I love the temperatures. I'm just surprised at how often (not how much total) it has rained. But yes, I can imagine that mild in Chicago would not be so good. I remember being very surprised when I saw the temp at one Sox game was like 50 degrees and this was a couple weeks ago. I remember thinking that I thought it would be warmer by then, even in Chicago.
  23. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 02:12 AM) I'm not going to bump it because people might dig out mean quotes to show others up, but I'm reading the '08 draft thread and it's really funny to me. A decent amount of people upset with the Beckham pick, but a lot of people liked it. Maybe a slightly better reaction than to the Mitchell pick, which is funny. I might go back to 07 since we have a slightly better feel for those guys. I know the Poreda pick came out of leftfield. I did say "So now we/I start hoping Jordan Danks falls to us in the 3rd and we actually take him," after the Gordon pick. Guess that worked out, even if I was wrong round wise haha. Just went back through and read a couple different years' draft threads. I'm glad I didn't make myself look like a dumbass in the '08 thread. The '05 and '06 threads were funny. A good bit of optimism about Broadway, but also a lot of pissed off people that we didn't take Brian Bogesevic or Cesar Carillo. Turns out we made the right choice, even if Broadway never amounted to too much. And lots of people hated the McCulloch pick in '06.
  24. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 03:58 PM) After 10 games the DSL Sox are 10-0. Silverio with 4 HR and 16 RBI. Also at this point in his career he's an error machine at SS. Damn, that's impressive for any league. We must either have some really good talent there or guys too old to be playing in that league. Hopefully the former.
