THE OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2009 MLB DRAFT THREAD
dasox24 replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 05:52 PM) Complete hunch, but I think the Royals snap up Crow here. They went local with a couple higher picks last year. They spent some money on guys too so they might not shy away from the 4 mill. Good call -
THE OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2009 MLB DRAFT THREAD
dasox24 replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
So much for us getting Storen at 23. He really rose up a lot in the last few days. And, btw, Dan mentioned it earlier, but the clapping after every pick is really annoying me. -
SI: MLB Team by Team Draft Rankings Past 10 Years

QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:54 PM) AT least Borchard has the longest HR at USCF...That useless mess also netted us Matt Thornton!!! That might be the best trade Kenny has made... An absolute steal for a no-talent assclown. -
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) Let's try to get more than Jon Adkins and Michael Dubee. What? You mean to tell me that Durham for Adkins wasn't a steal on our part?

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) what channel is it on and when? MLB Network wasn't working this morning for me. If your MLB Network isn't working, you can watch it on MLB.com. Draft starts at 5pm Central.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:03 AM) Strange that you should mention this. I just finished the series a week ago. It was definitely awesome, and had some great characters. I guess my favorite character had to be Speirs, but close in second were Winters, Lipton, and Guarnere. Yeah, I think a lot of people's favorite character would be Speirs or Winters. Speirs is just a regular badass. And Winters is essentially the main character and one hell of a leader. I liked Malarkey a lot too. Lipton reminds me of my brother, who was an NCO in the Marine Corps. Also liked Buck Compton a lot. Oh, and how about that little scene with Jimmy Fallon? They did a great job with casting, but that guy does not belong in a war movie, lol.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jewis...people#Baseball I'm pretty sure a few of those are made up... aka Tiger Woodawitz under famous golfers

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) When's the last time we had a Jewish player on our roster? "Would you like something to read?" "Do you have anything light?" "How about this leaflet, Famous Jewish Sports Legends" I hope everyone here knows what that's from... And congrats to Aaron! He's pretty much done all he can at the minor league level to deserve getting called up.

QUOTE (LZPride08 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:22 AM) This is awesome.. what time is the draft going on? 5pm Central today for rounds 1-3. And then it also takes place tomorrow (rounds 4-30) and Thursday (30-50), but I'm not sure of the times. I know it starts early on those days, though. Like, by noon at the latest. IIRC, it starts at 10am one day.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) Now sign him to a one-day contract and let him retire with the franchise he belongs with... take a cue from the Blackhawks and repair that relationship. Exactly. I would love to see that happen... I love Frank. And even though McCarver went to my high school (so I normally back the guy even if he isn't the best announcer), he's flat out wrong if he said Frank shouldn't be in the HOF. What he did as a player looks even better now considering he did it cleanly whereas quite a few guys with better numbers than him were on PEDs.

Jeeeez... Omogrosso pitched terrible tonight. Allen finishing 4-4 with a HR is great to see. Flowers was really the only one who didn't get involved in the offense tonight. The 4-7 hitters for the Barons combined for 12 hits and 12 RBI -- when the middle/bottom of the order can carry the team like that, that's just scary for opposing pitchers.

QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 09:41 PM) That whole interview was hilarious. I can't believe Mark Paul Gosselaar agreed to come on the show like that. Besides him pulling out the old school mobile phone, my favorite part was when he was talking about how long he has lived in California and was like "I was actually raised in Indiana, but then I moved out West with my 2 friends and my high school principle." Nice Good Morning, Miss Bliss reference.

Good to see him producing even if it's only the DSL. Hopefully he'll go to Great Falls in a few weeks and get some PT there b/c if they hold him out of rookie ball after being in it last year, that's not a good sign. I just hope he's not like 2 years older than we think.

I recently finished the mini-series Band of Brothers and it was phenomenal. I know it's not a movie and this is a movie thread, but I figure a mini-series is close enough, so I thought I'd mention it. Definitely a very cool look at the march to Berlin from the paratrooper perspective, whereas most accounts I've seen/read are from guys that landed on the beaches on D-Day and went from there. Bastogne was hell. And it's definitely sad when you see how many of the original guys that trained at Camp Toccoa ended up dying or wounded pretty badly, but the series as a whole was great. Can't believe I waited so long to finally watch it.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 04:43 PM) I really hate the thought of drafting a reliever in the 1st round. You should be using the first round pick to bolster your farm as much as possible and drafting a reliever would completely contradict this as it's by far the least valuable position. Lets say you take Storen at 23 and he reaches his full potential, he's still only going to be around a 2.4WAR player (and even that's a stretch), last year there were around 140 players who had a WAR above 2.5 and only 2 of them were relievers. That's how I felt too until it looks like whatever team takes Storen will make him a starter. If that's the case, then it's a great pick b/c a guy with Storen's stuff that was already a SP probably wouldn't last to #23.

Nice article.... It feels so good to be excited about the minor league system again. We have so many guys that are fun to follow, and Sauer is one that has really gotten my attention in the last couple weeks.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) Here's what Jim Callis has to say about Mitchell: If we pick Mitchell, I'll be a bit disappointed. If we're going to take a guy that needs a lot more development and is a pure "potential" guy (e.g. a guy that has all the tools, but need to develop/refine them to be successful), then I'd rather go with a high school kid... Tate would be fantastic. I think he'd be worth trying to get to sign.
-
I'd be perfectly happy with Arnett, Storen, Jenkins, Pollock, or Trout.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 02:17 AM) Keith Law and Jonathan Mayo have us taking Trout with our first pick. That would be great. Wasn't this kid projected as a possible top 10 pick just a couple weeks ago?

We have a Hookah bar close to campus in Knoxville. I know people who have been, and I definitely want to try it sometime. I don't think it would be something I'd do a lot, but I definitely want to try it. And as far as buying stuff in Iraq goes, my brother-in-law bought me an XBOX for $20 there, so I totally get what you mean about "shopping in s***ty economies with US dollars > shopping in the US."
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) Just want to play it close to slot and take some signable guys. Well, close to slot is fine. But over-drafting guys to sign them for less than slot money would be unacceptable.

That FSU batter just had such a clutch hit. 2 outs in the 9th, 2 strikes in the count, and he knocks in 2 runs to tie the game. FSU now in the lead 8-7. And Virginia made a hell of a comeback as well. Carraway did a great job coming in as a reliever to keep Ole Miss from scoring for a few innings until the UVA offense could get something going. Matt Packer with a clutch performance (coming in with 1 out and a man on 3rd), allowing no runs for the Save. 4-3 UVA. If Game 3 is anything like these 1st 2 games, it will be an exciting one to watch.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) I'd be fine with the Trout pick except for the Rowand comparisons we'll have to hear. I don't have near the sources I used to, but one of my remaining sources tell me they don't expect the Sox to spend much on their top picks. Fantastic...

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 12:05 AM) That’s absolute bull. If you ever have the time I’d talk to the manager, it’s just a half-assed way to go about things. Also, anyone else wanna put their man card down for a second and say that they’re reasonably excited for the next Harry Potter film? I'm definitely excited. No shame in that at all.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) 2 minute digital shorts are one thing, and it helps if you're familiar with the McGuyver source material to get the 80s attire etc. But, do you think the joke can be sustained over the course of a 90-minute movie?? Really bad idea. Absolutely not. But that's not what I was talking about. Everyone was hating on the MacGruber skits and I said I think they're funny. It had nothing to do with the movie they're planning on making b/c I wouldn't expect it to be funny at all.
