QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 02:47 PM) I guess that Gomez character from Hardball Times was correct in labeling him an injury waiting to happen following his selection. I was ecstatic when the Sox selected him. Even now I don't feel it was a mistake. Griffith represented a raw pitcher with a high ceiling, and at the time (a little less now) we were starving for prospects with potential. It's not as if we had a history of success in the first round, yet alone the second, to continue signing low impact/cheap players. I'd sign a Nevin Griffith clone in the second round every damn year rather than a Matt Long/Donald Lucy type, where they'll remain healthy but never be anything more than a minor league roster filler. I feel exactly the same way. Taking Griffith was one of the first times in recent memory the Sox took a high draft pick based on high potential, rather than playing it safe the Broadway or McCulloch way. I was so happy we took a chance on a high risk/high reward type player, and don't regret it one bit. He may not pan out, but it was worth it.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 04:14 PM) Heisman has to be dead last on that list. It basically relegates you to has-been status or an NFL bench. What better place to be?? You don't have to do anything. You get paid to do nothing but hang out with pro football players. I'd say Matt Leinart's doing pretty well right now.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) If we get Willy T, then you get Jerry Owens with a better arm and a recovering broken leg. woo. hoo. Yeah, but it's still better than Jerry Owens. Taveras would be vastly superior to Jerry in CF. Essentially, you get a younger Jerry Owens who has actually performed pretty well at the Major League level. Maybe not last year, but who's to say he won't rebound. We're in a world of hurt if a 28-year-old rookie CF is leading off for us.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) Oh sweet pea, if you win a nobel people will be falling over themselves to give you money for your research. And labs that win Nobels are not hurting for money beforehand. Oh, I know. It's just that... some people may love the research they're doing, but if I had to choose b/t long days doing research or long days practicing, watching game film, and being a total badass ... I'd choose the latter. Not as rewarding, but more fun.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) If you want exclusivity, you want 50,000 posts on Soxtalk. I thought about that. At my rate, I've had almost 4,000 posts in 5 years. So, I'll hit 50,000 in about 62 years, aka when I'm 82 years old. I wonder if Jason will still be running this site then... On that note, who's gonna be the first person will be to 1,000,000 posts?

I'm honestly feeling like it will be Willy Taveras, which makes me happy b/c we won't have to see Jerry Owens at the big league level.

I was going to vote "hall of fame" but then decided to go with the most exclusive one (that I've heard of anyway), and that's the Heisman. Only 73 people have ever won that award compared to countless others for the nobel, pulitzer, hall of fame, etc. I went for the exclusivity. And something that wouldn't take years of research only to be followed up with using your winnings to do more research (e.g. Nobel). Though, on the flip side, it would be hard to argue with being able to say, "Yeah, I won the Nobel Prize for Medicine when I cured ____." Winning a Heisman pales in comparison to curing people of illness.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 11:50 PM) Someone finally did what 70% of Americans have wanted t do for a long tine now. Sounds like you approve of what this guy did, or at least think its funny... That's pretty f***ed up. I sure as hell didn't want Obama being my next President, but I would never think this was funny or deserving if it happened to him. Oh, and can you imagine the outrage if this did happen while Obama is President? The dems still would have blamed the attack on Bush, saying the Iraqis wouldn't hate us (and therefore attacked Obama) if it weren't for Bush attacking Iraq. Democrats will never be happy, will they? They always need someone to blame.

QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 04:58 PM) Beat the s*** out of someone who stages a pretty nonviolent, mostly symbolic protest of throwing shoes? Right, that sounds appropriate. GWB is as unfit for command now as he was when he stole the election in 2000. He is lucky this is the worst attack he has seen in his 8 years in office. I seriously hope this reporter is released soon with little to no retribution. I wouldn't call that nonviolent. I realize it's unlikely, but throwing what looked to be a dress shoe (which aren't soft - hard sole) could do some damage if it hit just the right way. I mean, it's not like he threw a baseball cap at him or something. A shoe is a little more severe. Oh, and if you throw something in anger at the President of the United States, you should absolutely expect to get your ass beat. I'm disappointed he didn't. Though, I heard Bush waved off the secret service, which is why nothing happened. Definitely shows Bush being the bigger man there.

I'll third that... I can't wait to see this list. Thanks for all the work you've put into this, knightni

QUOTE (Yoda @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) LOL If I'm not mistaking (ST) went through a similar situation *cough* Gaged*cough* and there was an overwhelming response to it. I remember that. Not sure why people would care. How many posts you have doesn't solidify reputation as a good poster. What you post does. That said, it would take at least $1000 to give up my huge post count,

Hanging with Mr. Cooper... Daniel Cabrera non-tendered
dasox24 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I loved "Hanging with Mr. Cooper"... Great sitcom. I'd be fine with giving Cabrera a shot. As a #1/2 starter, he definitely failed expectations. But, if he's only our 4 or 5, then I think we could live with his inconsistency. -
QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 08:29 AM) Three "A"s on Stats exams but my lab grade may have dropped me to a B. I really despised having to take a lab for stats. I know it was put in to help the math and stats addled individuals pass. We only had 2 tests and some quizzes (and a final). Made B's on the 2 tests and A's on all the quizzes. Depending on how I did on the final, I should finish with a B for the class, which is fine. And we didn't have a lab. That would have sucked. Oh, and by the way, I AM DONE!!! So long suckers... I haven't slept in over 24 hours and I could hardly see straight on the exam I just got out of. But now it's just me, my buddies from back home, the Bulls-Grizzlies game when I get back in town tomorrow, and a whole bunch of nothing for Christmas break. I can't wait. Oh, and I guess I'll be heading to Texas for a few days to visit my brother and sister, which is always fun. Texas is probably my favorite state I've ever been to. I'm jealous Tex...

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 12:37 PM) Mr. Tebow meet Mr. Hansbrough. you both have no professional futures. So true... I can't wait until Tebow sucks in the pros and he drops off the face of the earth. As a Tennessee fan with Florida being our biggest rival, all the "Tim Tebow is god" talk is worse than any of you can imagine. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 02:33 AM) Pulling an all-nighter here, wish me luck. Right there with ya... Just took about a 5 minute break after studying for statistics for the last 6 hours, and now I'm moving on to studying for religion.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) Didn't he give up his eligibility after his year of Indiana basketball? I figured something like that was coming... -
2 down, 2 to go... I just turned in my 10 page single-spaced paper that I didn't start on until Sunday night. Huge relief finally getting that out of the way.

Official Recruiting Thread II
dasox24 replied to greasywheels121's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Not that anyone on here cares about Tennessee football (or the SEC for that matter), but Lane Kiffin is already reinforcing his reputation as a great recruiter. Eric Gordon, a 4-star CB out of Nashville, committed to UT today after his previous leader was Alabama. UT was pretty much an afterthought for him until Kiffin was hired. After an in-home visit from Kiffin and Kiffin attending Gordon's state championship game, Gordon felt like he had such a good connection and feeling about UT that he committed. -
My main man here just came back from a tacky Christmas party. He preceded to pass out in the hallway and was unmovable for about an hour until he got up and went to his room. That was my Saturday night for ya. I was hammered too when I filmed this... Some of yall wanted more stories in this thread, well, this hopefully is better than just a story. Though, it may only be funny to me b/c it's my buddy. Thought I would share nonetheless.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) I have an online final today. but Blackboard is down. Great start. Gotta love that... The internet at my house was down for a couple of hours yesterday and it killed my studying b/c so many teachers put notes, etc. on Blackboard. I could have gone to campus, but just decided to study for an exam I don't have till Thursday.

Cabrera Declines the White Sox's Offer of Arbitration
dasox24 replied to Jimmywins1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (tommy @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 04:18 AM) It would be awesome if someone figured out where our payroll stands as of right now, with the departure of Orlando Cabrera, and possibly Jermaine Dye. I'd do it but I'm so busy with finals and school I simply have no time! Then what the hell are you doing spending your time on a message board? Just kiddin... I'm right there with ya. It's 4:30am and instead of continuing my studying for exams, I'm on Soxtalk. Something is not right about that. In regards to O-Cab not accepting arbitration, great news for us on the free agent market. Accepting would have been bad for both sides and he knew that. I didn't hate Cabrera as much as many seemed to, but I'm still glad he's gone. I want Furcal now. -
That's a pretty solid pickup for the Tigers. Doesn't seem like they gave up too much in the 25-year-old AA guy, but the 17-year-old pitcher obviously has potential (strictly for being so young if nothing else).
