University of Colorado Fraternity Suspended After Drunk Pledges Wreck
dasox24 replied to sox4lifeinPA's topic in SLaM
QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 22, 2008 -> 05:08 PM) And what will fraternities do to improve their name? Really? Okay, how about the thousands of dollars that fraternities (and sororities) raise for charity each year. For example, my fraternity raised $10,000+ for St. Jude Children's Hospital this year alone. I guarantee that's more than most "independent" organizations raise for charity ever year. Plus, factor in the donations to other philanthropies and the participation in community service (Habitat for Humanity mainly for my fraternity) as well as things like partaking in Race for the Cure and Relay for Life (two philanthropies for cancer research), and fraternities do a lot more good than the average organization on campus. Also, at most schools (at least in the SEC), greek life tends to dominate student government and other prominent organizations like that. I'm not saying you have to be in a fraternity/sorority to be involved, but it's true: most involvement is from those in a greek organization. I am involved in SGA, am helping run a campaign for my fraternity brother who's running for SGA president next year, and am a member of our student alumni organization (which, not to brag, but more as a point of reference: it's pretty difficult to get in). So what if we like to get really drunk when we party? That's so stereotypical, but I'll agree that it's true. But really, is that such a bad thing when we do so much good to the surrounding community. And no, I'm not condoning what these kids did to this hotel room. But if you're gonna call out fraternities like that, I want you to realize how much good really does come from them. -

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) good lord...look at those uggos, I would be a greek god at the U of C. No kidding... The kid with the long blond hair made me and all my buddies laugh. Just giving fraternities everywhere a bad name. -
I've tried on Jim Taylor's Super Bowl I ring... And I bet none of you have talked to Keith Bulluck for about 20 minutes or so, and not remember any of it (absolutely hammered drunk)...

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 18, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) Disagree, Tenn hasnt really beaten anyone, either has Vandy. Just because you look good beating cupcakes doesnt mean that they could beat top teams. Tenn will play Memphis, so we shall see. How can you say Tennessee hasn't beaten anyone when they have the 2nd hardest strength of schedule and are 5-1 against teams in the Top 25? -
It's possible but not probable...

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 17, 2008 -> 10:28 PM) Looks like #1 Memphis vs. #2 Tennessee. Go Tennessee :-). I can't wait for this weekend! I was going to go to Memphis for the game, but I have to work. Oh well. It will still be just as great watching 1 vs. 2, and Tennessee becoming the new #1 next week! -

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 08:45 PM) The point here is that Indiana University did not do anything wrong. Yeah, but whether you like it or not, if the coach messes up, the school is gonna take the fall with him. As an employee of Indiana University, Sampson is representing the university with his actions. They're not just gonna be able to fire him and lessen the penalty that much. It may be less, but it will still hurt the program. -

In a day that has been hard for IU fans, I thought this might be a nice laugh. I don't care what y'all say, I love Bob Knight. -
I just finished Meat Market by Bruce Feldman (the college football recruiting book). It was fantastic. Right now I just started The GM by Tom Callahan, which basically tells the life of an NFL GM. Follows around Ernie Accorsi in his last year in the league with the Giants. I'm looking even more forward to finishing it now b/c most of that Super Bowl team was built by Accorsi. Next up on the list after that will be The Blind Side by Michael Lewis, Jarhead, and Angels and Demons... There's just so much I want to read.

QUOTE(NUKE @ Feb 13, 2008 -> 02:36 PM) Iraq: Everybody and their brother, including most Democrats perceived Iraq as some form of "grave threat that needed to be dealt with". Bush does something about it and has been paying the price for it since. I will agree with you that it's time to start drawing down bigger numbers of troops than what is on the table from Bush. Kyoto Accords: A giant "f*** America over" treaty that penalizes us while ignoring India and the current biggest polluter in the world.......China. Anyone with half a brain in their head would give that treaty the finger as unfair. This is especially true since all these pious, stuck-up Euro-assholes are seeing their own carbon hold constant while the U.S. actually saw a decrease in 2006 ( last year of available stats ). Hmmn. I guess that treaty really worked out for you guys huh? http://www.mnp.nl/en/service/pressreleases...ndposition.html If you want something substantive done about carbon emissions how about seeing the enviro-alarmists drop their arguments to Nuclear? It's perfectly clean, safe as anything else, and ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS! Alas, they are not interested in clean energy, just in rolling America back to the stone age. Letting Oil Companies rape Americans: Oh boy, where do I begin on this one? Lets start by informing the economically ignorant that the President does not set the price of oil and neither do the oil companies. That is determined by a bunch of hair trigger traders in New York and Chicago. I guess Bush should just wave his hand and make high gas prices go away. That's about as realistic an expectation as getting Americans to deal with the real problem which is themselves and their gas guzzling SUV's and Trucks. When given the choice between taking responsibility for their own failings or blaming someone else, Americans will always choose option B. Pussies that we as a nation are. America ranks 24th in broadband penetration: So now it's the federal government's duty to give everyone a blazing fast internet connection so they can download porn..er.......I mean enlighten themselves.......yeah. If you don't have access to broadband because it isn't available in your area, I have one word for you....satellite. If you're some minimum wage slave who can't afford it, I have another word: Library. Healthcare companies charge record prices: This one's more fun than the oil part. If insurers weren't forced to pay for Viagra for some old pervert who can't get it up anymore, if they weren't sued 50 times a day by people who got denied for plastic surgery, if emergency rooms were actually used for emergencies and not every time someone's little snowflake catches a cold.........whew.......then maybe things wouldn't be so darn expensive. National Debt out of control: I actually agree with you there. The Republicans have done an utterly disgraceful job of managing the purse strings. Runaway spending's bad mmmmmmmmmmmkay! Subprime crisis: HAHAHAHA!!! Good one.........Oh wait, you were serious. Yeah YOU may know they were a bad idea, but to the knuckle-dragging masses out there who think they have money just because they have a check book it's a sweet deal. It, of course, is somehow government's fault when some Wal Mart drone making 9 dollars an hour takes out a loan for a house he couldn't possibly afford, doesn't read the fine print and doesn't care about the terms gets burned and loses something he had no business having in the 1st place? OHHHHHHHHH The humanity. This is just another symptom of our culture of instant gratification. Little things like personal responsibility and living within our means are old and busted. WHEW!! I'm out of breath! Wow, you pretty much said everything I feel on those topics, but I didn't have to type it. Thanks! lol

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 13, 2008 -> 03:44 PM) Why the blacked out names? Also, I'm sure it says somewhere in there, but who provided this information? The players listed? I'd have to assume that the names blacked out are those of current student-athletes at IU. The notice of allegations was provided by Indiana University, so I assume that while it's not an issue for non-students, they have a right to protect their own students by not disclosing their names on the report. Oh, and if anyone would like to read it, here it is: http://assets.espn.go.com/media/pdf/080213...allegations.pdf -

QUOTE(JuiceCruz16 @ Feb 13, 2008 -> 01:43 PM) He would just quit on them if they were not going to make the tournament (I'm tired of it, but I might coach again somewhere). Sampson will be gone, but Knight will be the LAST guy they consider. My dislike for Indiana comes from having Knight there, so toss both the assholes aside and start over IU. I would like to see Dakich the region boy get the gig, but I doubt that he will. I was more or less kidding. I personally still think Knight is a great coach, but Indiana would never bring back Knight. -

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Most of my dislike for Indiana comes from them having Sampson as their head coach, and his handling of the Gordon situation. Regardless of how you feel about the program, they are one of the best historically and it's sad to see this happen. They should bring back Knight... -

So do all of you who think Smith should have been kicked off the team not believe in second chances? You're all a bunch of hypocrites. I will promise you that all of you have been given 2nd chances in your life for messing up. Forget all of you for saying s*** like Smith should be kicked out of school. A 20-year-old kid made a huge mistake, but from what I've gathered he has been a model citizen since it happened. I guarantee you he'd be kicked off the team if so much as a peep is heard from him. He's going to end up doing good by sharing his incident with younger kids for years to come, and helping them stray from drunk driving. I feel very strongly about this, and I can't stand seeing people post all this s*** about Smith like they've never done wrong in their life... Let those throw the first stone who have never sinned. Oh wait, that's none of you. -
I only have 1 pair of jeans and they're Levi's. I'm more of a khaki's guy than a jeans guy, but I really do like my Levi's. On a side note, how come we say a "pair" for pants if it's only one item of clothing. i.e. I'm going to buy a pair of jeans. Is it b/c there's two legs? I've never understood that.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 12:27 AM) In 2-3 years Illinois will be a top 3 Big 10 team. You cant win all the time, its just the nature of college sports. Exactly. Glad to see there's a logical fan out there, even if he is a Wisconsin fan But seriously, Illinois is in a hell of a down year, but they'll be back on top in a couple years like you said. The future is bright, Illini fans. Don't be so upset. Oh, and as for this being the "super bowl" for Illinois. I agree that it was for the fans b/c of the Gordon saga, but as for the players, I don't think they see it that way. -

Two of the top RBs still uncommitted today left me really disappointed... 5-star Enrique Davis picking Ole Miss over Tenn, and Harper picking Clemson over Illinois. Miami just picked up another stud. Randy Shannon is bringing that program back. -

Someone was apparently calling this kid and impersonating Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, and even went so far to send a bogus LOI. I feel awful for that kid. You would have think if he never met with Tedford, he should have known better. But, that's just terrible. What kind of jackass would do that to a kid? -
