  1. Guess I'll take a stab at this. Though, I'm just gonna do 20. 20- Sergio Morales 19- Carlos Vasquez 18- John Ely 17- Po-Yu Lin 16- Justin Cassel 15- Jose Martinez 14- Sergio Miranda 13- John Shelby 12- Oneli Perez 11- Luke Harrell 10- Nevin Griffith 9- Kyle McCulloch 8- Lance Broadway 7- Adam Russell 6- Aaron Poreda 5- Chris Carter 4- Ryan Sweeney 3- Fautino De Los Santos 2- Jack Egbert 1- Gio Gonzalez Danny Richar was left out b/c he just got called up, though I know he technically still has prospect status.
  2. QUOTE(Jim Spencer @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 08:54 PM) Man, if I could have got a couple of Vacation days this week I was going to be there tonight My parents live 1/2 hour from Pringle Park. Oddly enough, if I could have gotten off work, I would have been there too.
  3. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 03:21 PM) He's still bringing heat, his control has not been terrible, and his HR and K ratios are just fine; without one dumbass pitch to Aaron Rowand and with a better defense, he's looking at an ERA in the 4's with a WHIP around 1.4; he can further limit his control, he could make it back down into the lower 4's with a better WHIP. Add to it that he is coming off a year where he was good, and you can trade Thornton for Pena, problem for problem, with the Sawks willing to give up Pena because they are tired of his game and want Thornton as a reliever because of the stuff he pitcher he could very easily be for them. Hell, I know it's not exactly legit, but if you take out 2.2 IP from his season - the outings from his 3 losses - his ERA is below 4, his WHIP is 1.33, and his K/9 is 7.8. That's how easy it is for a reliever to have their stats totally destroyed and why I don't think his value is really nearly as bad as you think it is right now. Okay, so why not just wait till the offseason to trade him? If he's pitching that well, then his stats will much improve with the rest of the year to pitch. Therefore, it will make his value higher, right?
  4. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 05:12 AM) Tell me though, you and BearSox; if you are going to trade Thornton, what would you expect in return? You can't expect a package of players nor a great prospect for him; if you think you can, you'll never move him and you'll lose him to free agency or DFA without ever receiving any type of compensation for him. If you can get a high ceiling A ball prospect, you could very easily get a star player, albeit he won't turn into a star until 4-6 years down the line, and if you get Wily Mo, you get a starter now and a potential superstar if he can ever learn how to draw a walk. With the way this organization develops relievers, and seeing how KW can pick up bullpen arms on the cheap, it'd almost be a crime not to. You got a good year and a half out of Thornton in the pen; it's now time to see if Vasquez or perhaps even someone like Paulino Reynoso can do something. In the mean time, the Sox are turning Joe Borchard, Mr. LTP who couldn't do anything else, into Wily Mo Pena who has a very solid bat and could turn into an absolute monster in the near future. I don't expect to get much for Thornton. That's why I said we shouldn't trade him. I'd rather take a chance on him turning it around, than take a chance on some A-ball prospect that has a 5% chance of making it to the big leagues. It's not like Thornton's costing us a ton for the rest of the year, so I just don't see the harm in keeping him still ST next year, and then cutting ties if he continues to suck. You do bring up some great points about getting rid of him b/c of us not being able to contend for a few years, but I don't see how his trade value could get any lower from now 'till next March. He is pretty bad right now.
  5. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 11:30 PM) Trading Matt Thornton for Pena would be fine with me. It wouldn't be fine for me. I don't understand your fascination with trading Thornton for a guy like Pena or a high potential A-ball type prospect (see some other thread for where you said that). Our bullpen is pretty awful and we need to keep anyone that has a chance at being at least "okay" for us. If he sucks next ST and doesn't make the team, then I don't have a problem with giving him up at that point. However, I have a hard time believing we'll have 7 better guys. Anyway, I don't think we can realistically expect KW to replace anyone but Bukvich, Wassermann, and Day. And it will be tough enough as it is adding three new relievers for next year. Having to find a 4th better than Thornton will be very tough, especially considering that every team is always looking for good relief help, so we'll be competing against 30 other teams to find those 4 new guys. So, I'd rather keep Jenks, Thornton, Logan, and Haeger. Maybe Russell can come up at the end of the year and show us something positive. Then, only needing to find 2 new guys will be much easier.
  6. QUOTE(spataro51 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 04:26 PM) If i had to choose i would dump garland because no way in hell is he going to give us a nice hometown discount like Mb did. John is waiting to go pitch out west. I'm gonna have to agree with BearSox on this one. If Jon wanted to go out West and make more money, he could have left after '05 and gotten much more than what he got from us.
  7. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 10:11 PM) Second baseman that throws with the left hand? Or that his first name is Jesus? I have to imagine there'll be a position switch for him sometime. How many major league 2B are left-handed?
  8. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 11:13 PM) Thanks man. Just call me Captain Obvious...
  9. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 09:59 PM) I love game show network, btw. Me too! I just got the channel for the 1st time last year, and I love "Chain Reaction" and old re-runs of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"
  10. QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 09:51 PM) Being upset that he didn't play through pain is kinda silly. He essentially played a minimal amount of time in an friendly match due to an injury. That is like being upset that Urlacher didn't play in a pre-season game when his hammy is bothering him. That's a pretty damn good analogy.
  11. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 05:09 PM) I HATE THAT COMMERCIAL. I kinda like it. I've never seen those commercials until reading this thread, but they're just trying to have a little fun showing how anything can happen when you control what happens.
  12. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 09:53 PM) Porcello hasn't signed, and with the way the signing's have gone under slot due to MLB pressures, I doubt the Tigers will be able to put forth enough. None of UNC's 4 high school pitchers have signed yet, and only 23 days left! If Porcello doesn't sign, will everyone still be pissed we didn't draft him? Yeah, the Tigers will get an additional 1st rounder next year if they don't sign him, so it won't be a total loss for them. But for us, we need as much talent in the minors as we can get, so I don't believe we were in a position to not have a 1st round caliber draftee this year. Btw, I don't think we would have taken a chance on Griffith if we nabbed Porcello.
  13. QUOTE(Jeremy @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 04:06 PM) Yeah, I'm just not willing to wager $20 million that he will improve; if he doesn't he might be completely unmovable for the duration of his contract. Gambling on a a 35 year old's ability to return to form is very risky. In regards to Contreras, he's not owed too much more for the rest of the year since we've already paid a hefty portion of that contract, so unless we're offered a good deal for him, there's no reason to move him. We can hope he'll improve later in the year, and then get more in return in the off-season. And if he doesn't improve at all, then we'll still be able to get what we'd get for him now even if we wait till the off-season b/c his value is so low. Either way, I want Contreras off this team by Spring Training '08, but I don't see why we need to move Contreras if we won't get much in return.
  14. That would be an awful trade. I mean, Renteria isn't a bad SS, but he's not worth a SP of Garland's quality straight up. If they really want Garland, they can offer us Salty and a couple of their other young studs. Then we'd have a deal.
  15. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Jul 21, 2007 -> 11:44 AM) Totally agree, the more speedy CF prospects in the system, the better. Three guys the Sox scouts were high on are now in the organization ... Estill and Gilbert at GF and Kent Gerst from last year's draft in Bristol. The Sox hopefully can get the SS prospect Brian Guinn signed. Not sure if they'll be able to but there was a note in the Tribune about 10 days ago indicating they were working hard to get it done. It is somewhat complicated. These kids and their agents feel they should be drafted in the first 5 rounds and want that type of money to sign. The Commissioner's office is asking to review any signing bonuses over slot and most teams are adhering to slot guidelines, if they go over it's only by a couple thousand $. There are certain ways around it, usually involving paying for school and other guarantees. I swear I've seen your username before, but I guess not since that was your first post. Anyway, great way to start off here. Sound like you know what you're talking about. Welcome to SoxTalk!
  16. I haven't been following the rookie league box scores, so I just realized we signed Kenneth Gilbert. I don't know when this happened, but I think that's great news. I picked him as my AAP, so I'll try to get something up shortly. And that C.J. Retherford has pretty good #'s so far at Great Falls (yes, i know i know... it's great falls). It just caught my eye b/c he was an undrafted free agent who's doing better than a lot of actual draftees.
  17. Absolutely great for Wassermann! This guy has one heck of a story going from being signed after attending an open tryout to making it to the big leagues. Considering he had a 6+ ERA as a senor in college at Samford, he has come one hell of a long way.
  18. It's baaaaaack! Absolutely wonderful job, guys. I'm so glad to have this back up and running.
  19. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 14, 2007 -> 04:50 AM) http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...1,7410479.story Very good news to see. That is good news. Let's just hope they're making a strong push to sign Gilbert and Patterson too. We could use a big time hitting prospect in the org. like Patterson, who has a world of potential. Gilbert would be great to add to the CF depth since you can't have enough OF prospects, as we've seen recently.
  20. EDIT: Hell yes, it worked! I've been trying to figure out how to do this for quite sometime now, and I just noticed this thread, so thanks Balance
  21. Badass job. I just set that as my background, and it looks great.
  22. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 14, 2007 -> 02:48 AM) that soxtalk logo with sock and baseball is just unbelievably awesome... that all I want to say. You put that on a picture of richard simmons and that picture would look good. New Banner is awesome. Also, Podsednik says he will be ready next week for the cleveland series and be 100% in all aspects. I hope he is and has a nice week or so and then we could get something decent for via trade. At this point, I really wouldn't expect too much for Pods. At best we'd be getting an A-ball type player that has a lot of potential, but maybe not good stats. Like a pitcher with pretty good stuff, but serious command issues. I don't know why a team would give up anything more than that.
  23. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 13, 2007 -> 05:04 AM) How is this even debatable. Fields led a Big 12 team to the Cotton Bowl as a quarterback and set a record for passing yards. Yeah, I agree completely. That's what I was thinking when I first read this thread. If you're the starting QB at a major, BCS conference school, and lead your team to the Cotton Bowl while setting records for completions, yards, and TD's in a season at OSU, then I think you're a pretty darn good athlete.
  24. QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 11, 2007 -> 03:34 AM) Awhile ago, Wendy's was giving away free frosties and they seriously were just a tad larger than a shot glass. Oh yeah, that was awesome even if they were tiny. I think I drove thru like 3 different Wendy's one night just to get a couple of those.
