  1. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 12:48 AM) I actually wouldn't hate Jenkins he'd bring an .800+ OPS bat with the potential for .900 and some excellent defense in LF. He'd probably be fairly cheap and a decent stopgap. All in all I like what you have there DBAH0 I agree. DBAH0 didn't make too many crazy trade ideas. Just got rid of the older baggage we don't need, while keeping us talented and ready for the future. With his ideas, the lineup would look like this next year: C- AJP 1B- Konerko 2B- ?? SS- Uribe/Khalil Greene 3B- Crede/Fields LF- Jenkins CF- Sweeney RF- Ichiro DH- Thome SP- Buerhle (preferably)/Contreras SP- Garland SP- Vazquez SP- Danks SP- Floyd/Broadway/??? CL- Jenks Relievers- ??? Not too shabby of a lineup. I wouldn't mind it at all. You'd have to think they'd be much more competative than this years team.
  2. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 12:15 AM) Personally, I'd say that the odds would be in favor of 1 of the 2 reaching that level...but on top of that, this is still the White Sox...what do we usually wind up doing with top prospects? We wind up trading them fairly often. McCarthy, Reed, Gio, etc. Yes, we're altering that strategy a bit these days, but still, a former first round pick putting up decent numbers in the minors has pretty darn good value in trades. And on top of that, if either of them did make it to the big leagues with the Sox, we'd have several years more control over them than we would with Cano. If I thought this team was set for another title run in 08, I might be more willing to grab Cano and lose the draft picks. But unless Anderson, Sweeney, Fields, and a bunch of pitchers develop faster than what we've come to expect, then I think we're probably better off planning for the longer term, because we'll be waiting on those top draft picks from 08 and 09 to come up and fill holes. So as far as I'm concerned, the more of those type of guys we have, the better shape we're in. I like your point about having prospects to trade b/c Trader Kenny does love giving them up, mainly because not many actually make it to the bigs. Every "big time" guy KW has traded has seemed to fizzle. At the same time, I'd rather have Cano b/c even if we aren't set for another title run in '08, we may be by '11 or '12, and at that time, Cano will still be fairly young and in his prime. It's not like he's an aging veteran. He won't be 30 until October of 2012, hopefully while we're making another WS run
  3. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 11:49 PM) Given that both Dye and Iguchi are free agents next year and are both entering the down-slopes of their careers, I'd strongly consider doing that deal. Unfortuntaely, Dye picked the wrong season to put up crap-tacular numbers at the plate. Yeah, I think I'd do a Dye for Cano deal. It would solidify 2nd base for a long time, and give us a young, major league ready player instead of prospects, who may or may not work out (with the latter much more common). However, if he can get hot (he's gone 2-4 in his last 2 games, right?), we may be able to do better in a trade. He's clutch (WS MVP) and is capable of putting up sick #'s as seen last season. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 12:05 AM) Well, for me, I'd sit here and compare the value of Cano with the value of the value of an additional probably mid to late first round draft pick and a sandwich pick, which is what we're almost certain to get for JD if he walks, and I think that unless we find some major talent for next year somewhere, the 2 draft picks have a much higher value to me. I don't know. As much as I love the idea of two high picks, the likelihood of those two players ever reaching the level that Cano is currently at is highly doubtful.
  4. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 07:27 PM) Jerry Crasnick, emphasis his. As we should... Buerhle is one of the best pitchers in baseball, and still very young.
  5. There's no way that I'd trade Danks. He's the only real young prospect that looks like a keeper. He's still so young and doing very well for a rookie in the bigs. If we want to compete with Detroit, Cleveland, and Minny in the future, we need to keep any young pitcher (or position player for that matter) that does well b/c they're all stocked with boatloads of young talent. We're not in a position to trade away a bunch of young prospects/players for one guy (abeit one very talented hitter).
  6. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 08:48 PM) It is way worse. You can say that again. I can't think of another team that has a worse farm system than the Cards.
  7. I also just read that Poreda's agent (or advisor or someone like that) said that he expects Poreda to sign soon so he can get to Winston-Salem ASAP. So maybe he's not going to GF afterall. That would suck for the guy who wrote that article on how our top draft pick would be playing in GF this summer.
  8. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 09:04 PM) Great. The day I book reservations to Myrtle Beach, I find out there toxic s*** in the water. Solid. You're not alone. Looks like there's some good ole mustard gas pretty close to Gulf Shores, which is where I'm heading in August.
  9. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 04:53 AM) Verlander, Miller, and Porcello are gonna make one hell of a young trio... I hate the tigers more then anything right now. But hey, let me know when and if they win a world series anytime soon. At least I have something! I wouldn't quite put Porcello's name with those two yet. First, he'll have to sign, and the Tigers will only have until Aug. 15 to get it done with the new rules in place. However, that said, I do think the Tigers will give him what he wants money-wise. Second, he's very young and high school players are far from sure-things. Now, I'm not saying he won't be good, and I would have loved for the Sox to take him, but I'll wait till I see results at upper levels before I start putting him alongside Verlander and Miller.
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 03:20 AM) I can't imagine any team giving up that much. I think most people think that, which is why I'd accept a trade of lesser talent, just not prefer it. However, that package I listed of what the Mets would have to give up is not even as good of a package as the Indians got for Colon, though I guess Buerhle is a FA at the end of the year, which Colon was not at the time.
  11. QUOTE(Brian @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 01:25 AM) Who or what is Rihanna? She's a singer who has a new song out called "Under My Umbrella"... It's quite awful
  12. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 01:54 AM) Williams honestly better receive a stellar return for Buehrle, if traded. I'm not even accepting excuses. If we're not willing to pay accordingly for talent in the FA market (which we may this offseason, although I doubt it), fail to draft players whose stock has fallen due to signability concerns, or develop players abroad; then acquiring prospects is likely our best option for improving the ballclub. It's the responsibility of our scouts to identity talented players for other ballclubs producing in Single A or Advanced A level leagues. Favorable trades typically involve prospects from these levels. I'm setting expectations high. In future seasons, I should heard people include the package received for Buehrle in accordance with Bartolo Colon and Victor Zambrano. Get to work, Williams. I'm expect whomever acquired to be producing on this ballclub by 2009. The D-Rays should have never gotten Kazmir for a guy like Zambrano, but I agree with everything you say. In fact, in another thread, I said I would prefer a package of something like Pelfrey, Humber, and a young OF like Fernando Martinez for Buehrle if we traded with the Mets, for example. Or something similar from another team.
  13. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 12:44 AM) Sometimes a team will take these sort of guys in the 10 or 20th round (Sox took BA' 66 or 67 rated prospect right around the 22nd round in this years draft and also did something similar when they took John Danks brother) and than try to make a serious offer (giving them top 2 round money). Danks brother was a guy that turned down a pretty good offer from the Sox because he wanted to stay in school. Man, how sweet would it have been if we could have somehow signed Jordan Danks? Though, from the get-go, we knew we had a .01% chance since he only fell b/c he specifically told teams he wouldn't sign. I do remember his father speaking very highly of the Sox and how they handled the negotiation process, and that he'd love for his son to get drafted again by the Sox. Well, who knows if that will happen, but we did trade for his other son
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 10:42 PM) What about the Mets or potentially the Braves. I doubt the Dodgers/Pads/Angels would be interested in Buehrle though. Phillip Hughes would be sweet, but since that probably won't happen, I would love to make a deal with the Mets or Braves since they have some very good pieces for a trade. As for the Mets, I'd take Pelfrey (even though he struggled in the bigs this year), Humber, and an OF like Fernando Martinez for the future. Or with the Braves, Salty would need to be included, though I hear they won't trade him.
  15. QUOTE(Fantl916 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 11:49 PM) personally i'd want a possible superstar for Buerhle, not another possibly solid player. if youre gonna trade your best player shoot for the moon, dont settle for anything less than high potential I agree completely with you that I'd rather get a more highly rated, sure-thing type prospect for Buerhle since he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. However, if teams weren't sure they could lock him up to a long-term deal, I don't know if they would give up that type of player for him. Of course, I'd rather just sign Buerhle to a long-term deal ourselves and keep him 4-5 more years.
  16. QUOTE(beautox @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 11:34 PM) Rasmus and Anderson excite me. Yeah, definitely. Anderson is a very good Catching prospect, and currently hitting .288 in AA with only 9 more k's than walks. Definitely has the ability to hit the ball for a good average. He's only 20, so that's very encouraging that he's already in AA and doing well. On a side note, anyone know what happened to Mark McCormick? He throws some serious heat (tops out at 97 mph fastball) and seems like the type of power pitcher KW would be interested in. However, I can't find his stats from this year, though I didn't look very much further than the 1st page of results I saw on Google. Also, Chris Perez would be a nice pickup. He's a Closer prospect in AA right now and has been doing very well. He was drafted last year out of Miami and some were predicting the Sox might take him, so we might have a history with him. He's currently 2-0 with 16 saves and a 3.08 ERA in 24 games (26.1 IP), and has 44 k's, 15 bb's. He also is listed as having the best Slider in the Cardinals' farm system. I think a package of Rasmus, Anderson, and Perez along with a guy like Jon Jay (who has potential but is struggling this year) would be okay by me.
  17. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 12:05 AM) http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...deoid=741851440 Nice. Another badass montage.
  18. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 11:47 PM) So now what? Which is part II of my question: now what? How do we fix this? Well, it will take time. As Flash will tell you, we need to improve out scouting in Latin America by a lot. Our presence there is pretty much non-existent, except for the Dominican Republic. And yet, still, we've only signed a handful of guys out of there that have been worth anything past the rookie leagues. De Los Santos and Hernandez are the only 2 off the top of my head that have amounted to much in terms of prospect status. We also don't need to be worried about giving out big bucks to guys in the draft who fall b/c of signability issues. The Tigers, for example snatched up Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, who fell a little b/c teams didn't know if they could sign them, but the Tigers did. Now they have a stud pitcher and a highly rated OF prospect. After Borchard, we haven't come close to giving out a really big signing bonus. The last couple of years we've taken safe, college pitchers who didn't have too much leverage to turn down a contract offer from us. I would have loved for us to taken Porcello in this year's draft, but we didn't and the Tigers did. He was the best high school pitcher in the draft and should have gone Top 3 if not for signability issues. Obviously, he could not sign and go to college, but I have a feeling the Tigers will get it done. That said, I still really like the guy we did take, Poreda, but I think it would have showed the fans that we were going to be a little more daring and serious about restocking the minors if we had taken a chance on Porcello.
  19. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 10:18 PM) I think the Cards could consider this sort of deal if they were willing to swing other guys to get the prospects necessary to make the deal. Because on there own, they don't have the upper echelon prospects I'd be interested in if the club was giving up a pitcher of Buehrle's caliber. Special pitchers command special prospects (and multiple ones at that in return). Corey Rasmus is a good starting point, but they need to package it around 2-3 more good prospects. I would however, potentially bite on a Molina, Rasmus, Waingright type of deal for Buehrle. Molina is the catcher of the present and future. I think he's a bit over-rated, but he's a very good athlete with a strong arm and his bat has improved (not much of a power hitter though). This also allows the club to move AJ for prospects and gets the club a lot younger at this position (I also think Hall is a very solid platoon guy to go with Molina). Wainwright is now pitching in the rotation, gets good sink IIRC, and had a very successful first full season out of the pen last season. He has struggled in the rotation and I think that is because he may not have enough pitches to succeed as a starter (but overall he gets good life on his stuff). Rasmus, for those that don't know, is probably the Cards #1 prospect and is considered a 5 tool outfielder. He has shown a ton of patience in the minors and has decent speed and is supposed to be a pretty darn good defensive outfielder with 20-30 HR power. He is 21 and has hit 10 (22 doubles) HR's thus far in the Texas league. Just a minor correction: You mean Colby Rasmus, not Cory Rasmus. Cory is his younger brother and a Pitcher in the Braves' system. Anyway, there's no doubt about it that Rasmus would HAVE to be included in any deal with the Cards. Being in Memphis, which is a predominantly Cardinal baseball town (b/c of proximity to St. Louis and their AAA team is in Memphis), I hear a lot about Rasmus, and their fans love him b/c he's a bright spot in a terrible farm system. He'll be 21 in August, so he's still pretty young. The thing I don't like about him is that he's only batting .269 in AA, though a lot of that is due to him starting the season really slowly. He's been heating up recently, IIRC. Plus, he was listed by BA as the Cardinals' best contact hitting prospect.
  20. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 10:22 PM) The Sox haven't spent a ton of money on draft picks so you can't really correlate the money to the farm system. The Angels on the other hand spend an absolute fortune on draft picks and other guys and because of it have a fantastic system. Albeit, they also have done a good job developing and scouting. Yep, when I began reading this thread, the team I first thought of when I thought about who I wanted the Sox to be like is the Angels. They spend a lot on both the big league club and the minor league system, which is why they'll be set for a long time.
  21. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 12:41 AM) I LOVED Hilton Head. Hilton Head is awesome. I went there for Spring Break two years ago and had a great time. That would have been my suggestion too, but Myrtle Beach is great from what I hear.
  22. Cosign. Happy Birthday Dan

    Inspiring Story

Wow, that's really awesome. Stories like their's are just amazing.
  24. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 06:56 PM) God I miss that feeling... Me too. Thanks for posting that Rock. I still remember exactly where I was and who I was standing next to (didn't sit down the entire 9th inning, lol) when that final out was made in Game 4. My dad and I were just going nuts, jumping around, and I don't think the smile was wiped off my face 'till I went to bed.
  25. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) Isn't bourgeois the term for upper-middle class in French? Haha, yeah, it does does mean a member of the middle class in French. That's what I think of every time I read his name.
