Chicago Shamrocks - LaCrosse
dasox24 replied to Kid Gleason's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 15, 2007 -> 11:50 PM) Going to bed last night after the game, they were showing some college lacrosse on TV. There is quite the difference. Is there a big difference in the balls used? The indoor goalies use those HUGE chest protectors and HUGE shin guards. But in the outdoor variety the goalies seem to use no form of protection. Do the outdoor guys scoff at the indoor guys like they do in football? The announcer for the Shamrox got a little annoying. He spent the whole time with fun little sayings and telling the audience to get up and all that junk. If he needs to talk the whole time, it would be cool if he would explain just what the heck is going on down there. The dancers. Ugh. One of the many things I love about the baseball is the lack of cheerleaders. The balls used are the same for indoor and outdoor. I'm not sure outdoor goalies necessarily "scoff" at the indoor goalies. The reason the indoor goalies wear so much padding is that the field is so tiny and there are much more shots on goal in indoor than outdoor. That being said, I used to play goalie and when I played indoor, I never wore that extra crap. I just wore a chest protector, gloves, and a helmet like the outdoor guys. Lacrosse goalies are so tough. I can tell you that a ball hitting you in the shin at 80 MPH hurts like hell. lol... I can't imagine what it's like to get hit by a 95-100 MPH shot b/c that's what those pro guys tend to shoot it at. And I've never heard of dancers/cheerleaders at any lacrosse game... That's terrible. -
Wow, I'm not surprised at all about the rain-outs. It has been an awesome weekend full of non-stop rain in the Tennessee/North Carolina area of the country, haha...

Awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I can imagine it would be pretty confusing if you don't have much, if any, previous experience with lacrosse, but if you do go more often, I think you'll really start enjoying it. -

Indoor lacrosse can be pretty entertaining, but I'm much more of an "outdoor" guy. I've played both and indoor has a lot more scoring. But, I just like the outdoor game better. Couple of clarifications: NLL = National Lacrosse League - the indoor pro lacrosse league MLL = Major League Lacrosse - the outdoor pro lacrosse league Lacrosse does not have a capital "C" after the "La" Indoor and outdoor are really completely different besides it being the same basic sport. Different rules, different goal sizes, padding, etc. Indoor lacrosse (or "Box" lacrosse) is huge in Canada, while Outdoor lacrosse is huge in the U.S. -
QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Apr 12, 2007 -> 01:09 AM) The Pioneer League doesn't start until late June, right? Correct. He won't be there for long, though, if he no ill effects from surgery. He should be back in Winston-Salem by July (giving him 4-5 starts in Great Falls to get back in the swing of things).
-
I thought Harrell was supposed to start in Winston-Salem, but he's not on the roster. Extended Spring Training possibly? I hope not, but where else could he be? EDIT: I found this on Whitesox.com:

I don't see how you could blame Pods for this one. We should've never been in this situation. If anything, BA should've been in the game. Plus, all Jenks has to do is get one more out, and it's over. Or the Home Plate Ump could have not f***ed us over for our 2nd run of the game. A 2-run lead in a game like that would have given us (or Bobby) a much different mind-set.
-
Well, that was interesting. I tried about 15 times and couldn't get it. Then, I took like a 2 minute break to grab something to eat, and solved it my 1st time back.

Hey, great job. I love interviews w/ our minor league guys. This may sound dumb, but what's a "leaner?" He referred to this in the the "best prank pulled" question.

I'm sorry, but Cheerleading is definitely a sport. Not all teams are like this, but the competitive ones practice 11 months/year and are in as good of shape as football players. They runs miles a day, work out, and practice for hours. It's more time consuming than a lot of other sports out there. Plus, those dude cheerleaders are rediculously strong. When you can hold a 90-100 lb girl over your head with one hand for about 15 seconds or so... that's strong.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 07:31 AM) It'd sure be great to have our distinguished minor league experts release the Top 25 in time for opening day. I'd imagine it will be. I know Heads and I have all our stuff turned in, and I'm sure the rest of the guys do too.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 03:05 PM) I think an elective world religion class would be a perfectly appropriate offering within the framework of any public school social studies program. Bible as literature would be less appropriate at the K-12 public school level and I think you could take issue with federal funds going toward any course offering that seems to give a preferential treatment to the written works of a single religion, but it would bean interesting elective offering from a college literature department. I agree completely. I took a World Religions class in high school, and it gave me so much more of an understanding and respect for people of other religions. I think a class would do wonders for some people, like one of my friends who told me the other week that I was going to hell along with anyone who didn't believe in his religion. I then asked if Gandhi was in hell right now even with all the good things he did, and he responded with a firm "Yes," which I found discouraging that someone would believe that just b/c Gandhi was Hindu.

QUOTE(pale_hose @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 12:42 AM) I was watching the game today and saw some dude named Adam Russell throwing. He looked pretty good. He has an above average fastball, a great slider, and a pretty good change. Has he been throwing well this whole spring and is he in the hunt for the 5th spot? Anything you could want to know about this kid can be found in an interview I did with him last summer. Really great guy and personable. Even after we finished the interview, we just kinda chatted about some other stuff like his hometown of Cleveland and how good LeBron is for his Cavs. Adam Russell Interview from Futuresox.com

Um, I missed that week when Sanjaya sang "Waiting on the World to Change," but it was god-awful at points. I think that performance made me hate him even more b/c I could do just as good of a job (seriously). All I have to say is that Sanjaya sucks for American Idol. I mean, he'd be good in a school musical or something, but not a competition like this.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Mar 15, 2007 -> 06:28 AM) I have to admit, I'm from Rockford but I hope they get their ass kicked. I graduated from a school in the same conference. Goers does a great job though, I think he's won like 15 straight regional titles. thanks... -

How 'bout them Titans of Rockford Boylan!? I just had to give them some props since my Uncle is the head coach there. -
Wow, that's really cool. Great idea! Good luck with the continued growth and development of your business.

QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 01:39 AM) How the f*** do we get a two seed? I'm with you on wondering how FSU didn't get a #1 in the NIT. I mean, Miss St.? Are kidding me? They weren't better than Ole Miss, but got a higher seed in the NIT. How does that happen? Anyway, Andy Kennedy has done a marvelous job in his 1st season at Ole Miss with the talent he had to work with. They were a NCAA Tourney bubble team for awhile towards the end of the season. Look at for them to represent out of the Clemson region. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 06:34 AM) "2006-2007 Snub: NIT" "2006-2007 Participant: Big Ten Conference" "Almost kept Illinois out of NCAA Tournament: 2006-2007" "2006-2007 better seed in Big Ten Tournament than NCAA Participants Illinois, Purdue, and Michigan State" Any of those would go great with last years "Almost beat #14 seed Northwestern State in 1st round: 2005-2006" God I LOVE Steve Alford, I hope he stays at Iowa forever, it'd be so grand. Those are pretty funny

The South Bracket (San Antonio)
dasox24 replied to greasywheels121's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Man, I'm a little nervous about Tenn's first round matchup with Long Beach, but I'm confidant we'll win, especially if we play the way we did against Florida. The only problem with us is that we're not good at all on the road and got bounced by LSU in the SEC tourney. We ended the season very strong, but that loss to LSU really hurt. At least the LSU loss was in OT and 3 of our top 4 scorers combined to shoot 6 of 30. There's no way they should shoot that bad again in back to back games. -
Thanks for posting... Pretty sweet interview, getting to hear what it's like from a bullpen guy's perspective.

Wow, you have no idea how happy you made me just now to see a thread entitled "Draft Plans/Needs." I absolutely love the MLB Draft. I guess it's probably b/c I'm such a "minor league" guy, and the draft is what restocks the system. As for this years draft, look for a change in philosophy regarding drafting pitchers. I think you'll see us take guys that have great stuff, but need some work. The past few years we've taken some solid pitchers like Broadway and McCulloch, but passed on the guys with the great arms. The positions mentioned above (C, middle IF) are extremely thin, but you won't see us draft for need. You draft best available player. Now, if the best available player at our spot is a Catcher or SS or 2B, then that would be fantastic. But, don't be surprised to see us take an OF or 3B, which while they aren't needs for the big league club, there are so many spots in the minors that you can find a great player playing time. Hell, whoever we draft will probably be used in a trade at some point anyway, lol... As for specific players, I have no idea about anyone that will be in this year's draft since it's only the start of baseball season. However, as June approaches, you'll be seeing plenty of stuff on BA.com and MLB.com

QUOTE(Wedge @ Mar 6, 2007 -> 09:59 PM) this summarizes my feelings: That's awesome... Chalk this one up, however, as a deal that I like. It's always good to have a veteran presence in the rotation (you don't want a bunch of rookies or 2nd-year types), and the contract is way below what someone would pay him on the open market. Plus, as alluded to earlier, Buerhle is as good as gone and Contreras is up there in age. That only leaves us with Garland and Vazquez as vets in a few years (assuming Jon reups), hopefully along the likes of Danks, Floyd, Haeger, Gio, Broadway, etc.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 09:28 PM) It sounds to me like hes a bigger talent than many think I agree completely. I really am interested by the fact that he throws his fastball from 2 different angles. That really can mess up some hitters if they have to see two different arm angles on two consecutive pitches.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 07:04 PM) I think it was mentioned that he doesnt have the amount of pitches to make it as a starter in the big leagues. With roughly 2 pitches he would be more effective out of the pen. Well, I don't know how good all of his pitches are, but he does throw 4. Well, actually 5 if you count the fact that he throws his fastball from 2 arm angles, depending on the situation. His overhand fastball and drop-down slider are his main strikeout pitches. His pitches include: Overhand Fastball Overhand Curve Overhand Change Drop-down Fastball Drop-down Slider
