QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 28, 2005 -> 05:11 AM) This is just my opinion, but Carillo doesn't seem to have a lot of upside from where he is now. Sure his velocity is ok, but it's still not that great. I'd just like for us to select someone at #15 with a bit more upside, but hey that's just me. I have to totally agree here. Carillo just doesn't, imo, have much upside, and has a tiny frame, which isn't good for him holding up for the long run. I have a feeling that he'll at best be a 4 or 5 starter, or a long reliever, and I don't think that's what we want to spend a 1st round pick on, especially since we don't have any supp. picks or a 2nd rounder. Also, it's kind of weird for me to be against the guy that's good at everything, but not awesome at one thing b/c that's what my lacrosse coaches tell me I am. They know I'm never gonna be All-State or lead the team in goals, but I play a ton b/c I'm smart on the field and do everything well. I get a couple goals here and there, get some assists, play good defense, etc. But, if there was a lacrosse draft for all the TN high schools, I wouldn't expect to be drafted in round 1 b/c I know that I'm not a "franchise" player, which you want a 1st rounder to be. I would rather take the "safe" player in rounds 3-5 that's gonna do stuff well, but be a "role" player to that 1st round "franchise" player.

It sucks to hear what some of the negatives about Torra are, but I'd still be very happy if we drafted him. As for his numbers going from average to awesome, who knows what might have happened in the offseason. He could have had some very good instruction on how to throw a pitch differently or maybe even learned a new pitch that made him better. Maybe it was just a confidence thing, or maybe UMass got a new coach that knew how to motivate him or something. I don't believe that the #'s he put up this year are a fluke.

I just wanted to say thanks to CWSguy for posting all this info. Hopefully, in the next day or two I'll be able to get a copy of the preview myself.

In the 3rd or 4th round, I'd love the Sox to look at Mark Holliman from Ole Miss if he's still around. He was a 1st Team All-SEC pitcher as a sophomore last year, but had somewhat of a down year this year. He's got a lot of talent, and can still dominate a game as was shown in the SEC Tourney when he shut down Alabama. I didn't watch the whole game, but through 6 innings, he had 12 k's (shoulda been 13), and had only allowed like 2 hits. Another guy to consider in rounds 3-5 is 2B Chris Getz from U of Mich. The Sox drafted him out of high school, so you know we'd be interested in him again. He could also probably move to SS if we wanted him to. He doesn't hit for power, but he's a solid player.

My first choice right now would be Matt Torra from UMass. I've liked everything I've read about this guy. Here's what Jim Callis of BA had to say about him:

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 25, 2005 -> 03:00 AM) Not the 4-5o'clock late yet. Once I get out of school next week I'll be back to the last summer routine Sweet. I'm out early b/c my school always starts early. We started like Aug. 13th this year. Anyway, if you have to take exams, good luck on them, and if you don't, even better! Oh, and I hate to say it, but there won't be many late nights for me like last summer b/c my job this summer actually requires me to wake up at about 7 a.m.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 25, 2005 -> 02:55 AM) Felix Hernandez I assume was pitching?? Yeah, that's who it was. That guy is bad ass. He went 7 strong, giving up 0 runs with 9 k's last night.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 25, 2005 -> 02:44 AM) How's it going, man?? Good to see you back around here. You out of school?? Yep, I got out a week ago. My one and only exam was on the 16th. (Gosh, I love exemptions.) It feels good to be back, and getting up to par on the minor leagues and the upcoming draft, and all that good stuff. Anyway, I'm goin' out of town tomorrow for a week to see my brother in Virginia. So, I'll be gone awhile again, but when I get back, I'll be back for good. Hey, rowand, you still gettin' on here really late at night like last summer? Go Late Night Sox Talk Fan Club!

I was listening to the post-game coverage of the AAA team here, and the announcers were talking about the game, and picked Morse as the Player of the Game. Then, they had him on for an interview, and he sounded pretty well-spoken and like a pretty good guy. They talked about how he's a big SS like A-Rod, and that the M's have given him tapes of A-Rod, so he can watch how a bigger SS plays the game. Anyway, this interview had nothing to do with the Sox, but it was just a good interview. So, I just thought I'd mention the former Sox minor leaguer, and I'm really rootin' for this guy to make it to the big leagues, now. Also, the M's had a 19 year old on the mound last night and he pitched great. 19 years old and already in AAA- I have a feeling this guy's gonna be a good one.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 24, 2005 -> 10:11 PM) Two way player if I think right (also closes???). Projects more as a hitter though and definately has the pop. Yes, he does close for Ole Miss. But, you're right about him projecting better as a hitter than pitcher.

QUOTE(Spiff @ May 24, 2005 -> 06:42 PM) Matt Torra the #23 prospect, goes to UMass. I had no idea who he was until now. Torra sounds good to me. Baseball America seems to like him, rating him as having the 5th best fastball and breaking ball, and 2nd best command of college pitchers in the draft. Plus, you gotta love the ERA (1.13) and WHIP (0.75), and he's got a good frame (6'3'', 225). Another guy that I like a lot is Stephen Head from Ole Miss. He's a lefty 1B/OF with some pop. His avg. is down a little this year at .308, but he doesn't have Seth Smith (high round pick last year) protecting him this year either. He's still got 16 HR's, though, and 58 RBI.

QUOTE(Randar68 @ May 24, 2005 -> 04:01 PM) I'm not particularly thrilled with either... I'd rather take a flier on Chris Robinson out of Illinois in the 4th or 5th round if he is still available. IMO he's the best defensive catcher in the draft and he has average tools at the plate, but he makes the most of them... I agree. Robinson would be a great pickup. I didn't know he was a great defensive catcher, which makes me want him even more. I just saw his offensive stats and thought he'd be a good pickup in one of the earlier rounds.

Happy BDay, guys! Hope it's a good one.

Thanks, guys. Man, did my b-day get a ton better tonight. Turns out my g-f said she couldn't go out last night b/c she had planned a surprise b-day party for me for tonight. I was in disbelief when I saw 15 of my friends and my family go "surprise!" As I said in a previous post, my friend took me golfing as a b-day present, but also to get me out so they could set up for my surprise party. I've got a pool, so we had a great time playing pool basketball and jumping off the diving board and all that stuff. Man, tonight was f'n grand. I realized I need to have a bunch of friends over more often to swim in my pool 'cause we had a blast.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 21, 2005 -> 04:35 AM) Happy Bday sleepy and Evan. Hope you had good ones, although I already saw Evan say his wasn't that grand. Thanks, Jason. Mine wasn't so bad. I was just lookin' forward to seeing my g.f. today. I normally really wouldn't have cared 'cause I'd just go hang out with my friends instead, but I haven't seen her in like 2 weeks. Plus, I've been out of school since monday and have been doing stuff all day, every day w/ my friends the whole week and was hoping to go out with her tonight.

My dad mows our lawn. He likes that sort of thing. He loves his yard and making it look nice.

Happy B-Day! Hopefully, it has been better for you than me. My girlfriend coudln't even go out tonight b/c her parents want her staying in all weekend b/c she has exams next week. How lame is that? But, tomorrow should be much better. My best friend is taking me golfing as a b-day present, and then I'm going out to eat at my favorite restaraunt w/ my family.

Agreed, Jim. This is definitely the best of the prequels. I actually had no intention whatsoever to see the movie tonight, but I ended up seeing it and I'm glad I did. The last half of the movie f'n badass! Well, here's my night's story about how I came to see the movie: My night started out by going to the bookstore to buy As I Lay Dying by Faulker. I left the bookstore when it closed at 10, and realized that I was close to the movie theater that one of my best friends was at waiting in line to see the movie. So, I thought I'd go visit him since he'd been out waiting since 2:00. I got there and couldn't find him. And, while I was looking for him, this elderly woman walked up and asked if I needed tickets? So, I asked her which show they were to and how much? She said they were for the 12:01 showing (the first one) and she'd take $6 for them. I couldn't believe what I heard, so I checked out the tickets and they were real. I decided to buy. Basically, the reason the woman took less than face value (which is $8 a ticket where I live) is b/c she had gotten there earlier to get in line and was given the opportunity to go to a special 7:30 showing for free. So, she had no use for the tickets she'd bought, and figuered she should get some $$$ for them. Anyway, as it happens, I finally found my friend, who was with some friends he swims with, and they were all at the front of the line to get in the theater. First, I went over and started talking to them and before I knew it, they started to let people in the theater. So, I just went in with them. I felt like an ass for skipping a bunch of people that had been there for hours, but then again, I would have been by myself had I gone to the back of the line and what was one person gonna hurt if I got in front. Plus, no one behind us cared and I even chatted with some people before we got in the movie that saw me move up to the front of the line, and they didn't seem to care. So, that's my story about how I saw the movie.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ May 18, 2005 -> 09:20 PM) Good stuff, another interesting thing, atleast to me, about the drafts is that we drafted Gerron McGary two years in a row and I don't think we signed him either year. Actually, we did sign McGary and he played for Great Falls last year.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 17, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) Hell dasox24 was always a big time Bounds fan. Hell yeah! I don't know why I liked him, but I just did even though he was always old for the level he played at. This is gonna sound bad from a guy that's supposed to know about our minors, but is Bounds in our system still? And if so, where? Sorry, I've been real busy w/ finishing up school and with lacrosse, so I haven't been following the minors much at all so far. Anyway, I'm very glad to say that yesturday was my last day of school, so it's summer now!!!.

I was hoping for Elton Brown in the 4th, especially since QB isn't a necessity. But, I have total faith in the front office, and I'm sure they know what they were doing. So, I'm gonna be positive about this pick, and hope it works out for the best.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Apr 22, 2005 -> 01:50 AM) WHAT THE f***! I just realized that I have a baseball game on Saturday at 10:00 AM........bulls***. I'll miss the 1st 2 hours of the draft. f***! But I'll have to live with it....I'm probably getting the ball Saturday. At least you'll get to watch most of it. I've got a lacrosse game at 12:00 three hours away from where I live, and won't be able to watch any of the draft. We're supposed to be back by 6, but then I have to go home, shower, and go to my school for our school play. -
Sportscenter Draft Special

I just turned it on when they were picking for the Bucs. So, can anyone tell me why they said the Bears would take Benson and what they thought about him? thanks -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 7, 2005 -> 02:30 AM) EDIT: Great writeup by the way. I'm really excited to see how Wes progresses this year and hopefully Lumsden comes back and is strong also. Unfortunately I don't consider Honel much of a prospect anymore but hopefully he proves me wrong. Yep, great job guys. And, I'm also really excited to see how Whisler does. I think he's gonna have a very good year (as long as I keep him out of my avatar).
