QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 29, 2013 -> 07:34 PM) Outside of the ridiculous Cutler biased crap there is good info there. I still don't think you fire staff after one year. You change players first. The defense was injured and inexperienced. Draft, sign and please coach. I don't think it's worst thing to make a staff change or two after Year 1. Most HC's don't always know their whole staff and end up realizing they need to make changes. You certainly don't want to make wholesale changes, but making a staff change can be beneficial. Note: I'm speaking in general here. Not only in regards to the Bears. On that note, I wouldn't necessarily get rid of Tucker. I think he did "okay" based on the hand he was dealt - mainly a rash of injuries to key players and lack of talent/depth. He tried to be aggressive this year, which I like. But it's hard when you're trying run a defense with major contributions coming from guys who were on the street at the beginning of this year and/or rookies. As for DeCamillis, I have nothing nice to say about him. He's just not a good coach. If anyone can prove me differently, I'm willing to listen.
-
One thing is for sure: DeCamillis needs to go. Not sure how he is so "respected" in NFL circles, but he's garbage. Dallas never had memorable special teams units (except for a bobbled FG hold in a playoff game), and the Bears regressed tremendously this year. Unfortunately, being Trestman's Associate HC, that means he'll probably still be around. But he's terrible.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 29, 2013 -> 07:16 PM) Yeah Tucker has to go. Conte has to go. Briggs probably shouldn't be brought back if he's expecting a nice pay day. He did play a lot better in the second half, but I don't think he's worth anywhere near what he's being paid this year. This defense needs a huge turnover. Peppers will be here regardless of what happens, his cap hit is huge. Maybe you bring back Melton and Ratliff on cheap deals. Jennings should be re-signed, he's easily the best player in the secondary (not saying a lot). As for Cutler, it all depends on what he demands. If he's willing to settle for what he got paid this year, which is around $14 million, you have to consider it. But if he wants a big payday, you have to let him go, there are too many holes on this team for Cutler to make $18 million a year. Re: Peppers... the cap hit is big if he's cut, but he takes up a lot more cap space if he stays. ~$10M difference. I think you could see Pep back on a restructured deal. No way he plays next year on a $20M+ contract.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 29, 2013 -> 07:15 PM) Jesus people. Learn to read. Here are the points i'm making: (1) Cutler might have outplayed Rogers in today's game based on stats alone, but at the end of the day one guy led his team down the field and won the game. That's who I think had the better game. It's not like Rogers sucked. (2) in thinking about the future, I don't believe Cutler is a franchise QB or the answer for the Bears, for a variety of reasons which I've spelled out. I'm not opposed to bringing him back, but it has to be at the right price because there are enough weapons for average QB's to win with IF they can also upgrade the defense. (3) the defense blows and clearly made critical errors in the game. They are much more to blame than Cutler. (4) people blaming Tucker for a stupid mistake by the defense on a fumble-TD and thinking Lovie would have stopped that from happening are stupid. To be fair, that's a cultural thing. When it's constantly preached to grab the ball any time it hits the ground (every play in every practice or game), then it gets ingrained in the players' heads to grab the ball and go. When you don't preach those things and make it a way of life, then players tend to not think about it. It's not drilled into their head. I won't blame that on Tucker, but you can be damn sure that would have been a defensive TD under Lovie. That doesn't mean I wish Lovie was still the coach or anything like that. But it's hard to argue that the outcome would have been the same under Lovie. After watching the defense during Lovie's tenure, I'm not sure how you think they wouldn't have scooped that and scored.

I'm depressed that it's still only December, and all I have to look forward to is the off-season. I'm not ready for that yet. I'm not ready for Free Agent and Draft speculation. This sucks.
-
The offense deserves a bit of blame for the 1st half (7 points is unacceptable), but this loss isn't on them or Cutler at all. It comes down to the 1st Packers TD. That's at worst a 7 point swing but more likely a 14 point swing (if Anderson picks that up and runs, he probably scores a TD the other way). That was a huge lost opportunity.
-
f*** you, Bears. And f*** all the s***ty ass defensive players who just watched the game deciding TD walk right by them. You play to the whistle. That was taught on Day 1 in any football league. 3rd graders know you don't just quit on a play. Awful. They deserve to lose.

I really wish CP wasn't in our division. That dude is going to run circles around us for years. The run he had against the Lions today was truly special. He's also a prime example of why you don't let the most physically talented freak who also has the best vision in the draft (at a skill position nonetheless) fall as far as he did. Lots of teams are going to be regretting that. I don't care if he doesn't know the playbook. He's a great kid and coaches love him. You can always find a way to make that work.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 24, 2013 -> 09:01 PM) I'm about a week in to the job search. Applied to 4 sports organizations so far I think. Everything seems to be either internships or 3-7 years experience needed. Where the hell are all the entry level jobs? Would have been willing to take an internship with Fort Wayne TinCaps or South Bend Silverhawks, but they pay between $500-$600 a month and expect up to 80 hours a week. That sounds awful. One thing to keep in mind: Even though organizations put a certain # of years of experience in the job description, it can still be worth it to apply. If you have any other experiences or things that you think could be a replacement for that, you can bring that up. Or if not, but you just think you're great for the job, it might be worth a shot to apply anyway. They might toss your resume as soon as they see the lack of experience, but then again, if no one else that applied has that type of experience, then they really can't throw away your resume. They'll have to give it a look. It seems that more and more companies are going with the "best possible candidate" route in their description, but they don't always get this preferred candidate to apply (or if they do, that candidate might not end up accepting the job). Then they have to re-evaluate their choices and if no one else fits exactly what they said they wanted, then you might get pulled into the discussion.

QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 21, 2013 -> 09:47 AM) I have the chef of a local restaurant coming over to teach tamale making to my wife and I. It should be fun. Very cool idea. Definitely something to keep in mind for the future.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 04:44 PM) Got my wife some bling. Wife gave me a nice black Fossil watch, the complete series of Seinfeld and a new Kindle Paperwhite. Have to figure out what to do with my old Kindle. Only had it for two years and it's still in great condition. My son's getting all sorts of Ninja Turtle stuff, some cheap generic ninja action figures, a giant Power Ranger and a big Thor figure. I didn't know Power Rangers were still popular. This makes me happy.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 07:08 PM) research shows that weight lifting is fine for kids once the growth plates close. This is usually somewhere between 7 grade and junior year of high school. Highly individualized. Interesting. That's good to know.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 05:51 PM) I dont like full contact sports for children until they get to HS level. I especially dont like how early some of those sports get kids doing weight training. However, even as a soccer player I've had multiple concussions. I got one in HS and played 2 days later only to take another direct head shot that had me lights out. This I agree with.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 09:13 AM) My son played from the ages of 6-12. He is a bigger, quick kid so he always played center/nose tackle. He got bored with just hitting and watching the ball. Since the age of 12, it's been nothing but lacrosse where everyone gets to play the ball, hit and run around. Lacrosse was always my best sport (even if I like football more). And actually, I am a NCAA DII/DIII lacrosse ref. Because of all of this concussion stuff in football, there has been a huge emphasis on cleaning up hitting in lacrosse. Any high hits (to the head) result in a 2-3 minute non-releasable penalty. And could lead to ejection depending on the severity. Basically the same as the NCAA did with the targeting rule in football. Of course, you probably already know this. Anyway, glad to hear he likes lacrosse. It's a great sport.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 12:11 AM) http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/06/03/ber...ds-of-football/ In my original post, I state that I'm aware that other sports can offer the same types of things as football. But for me, football meant the most. I get that it's not the same for everyone. But don't tell me playing another sport would have been the same for me because I know that it wasn't. And I'm sure it would be that way for a lot of people. I would never force my kid to do something he didn't want to. I plan on being like my Dad, who let us choose what we wanted to partake in, but once we started, we were finishing (at least for that season/event/whatever it was). If my son wants to play soccer, cool. I never played soccer and I suck at it. But I'd be damn happy as long as it's what he loves. But if all he wants to do is play football, then I'm going to give him that chance. Anyway, I'm not sure any opinions are going to be changed here.
-
When I do have a kid, I would absolutely allow him to play football if he wants to. Some of my favorite memories are from the football teams I played on. Some of my best friends are guys I played football with from way back in elementary school to high school, and to this day, we still talk about old games or big plays. It's a special sport and by far my favorite. I still play flag football in an adult league, and it's one of the highlights of my week. Getting out on the field, making plays, being on a team again. It's awesome. My team ranges from guys who stopped playing as freshman in high school to guys who played D1. We all have a blast out there, even when we lose. The D1 guys get just as excited after a big play as the others, and they've played way more legit football than us. One guy played in the National Championship last year - and yet after we won a game on a Hail Mary attempt, he was running around the field like a mad man. It's moments like those that I would never give back. And yeah yeah, I know I'm not playing contact football now, but my point is that the affinity I have for football grew a lot out of my old playing days. And yes, there are other team sports where you can have these types of experiences. But for me, nothing tops football. In college, we won 2 intramural basketball championships and one softball, and I'd trade all 3 of those for having won just one football championship. I just never cared about other sports like I did football. So if my Dad had said I couldn't play football, then I would have found another sport to like. But I'm not sure I'd have ever loved another sport like I do football. I'm glad I didn't have that taken away from me. If I have a kid who doesn't want to play football, then that will be fine too. And if he does want to play, then I'm sure I'll take into account a certain level of safety (coaching, program/league structure, etc), but that would be the same for any extracurricular activity. If it all checks out, then we're a go. Sorry, Tex - I realize that had nothing to do with your original post. But this whole thread seemed to have taken a turn, so I went with it.
