Official 2013-2014 NCAA Football Thread

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:32 AM) Since the coaches poll just came out, I think I read Louisville's top-rated opponent this season was ranked like 40th or something. And Tennesse plays 5 of the top 10 I believe. These are both true statements. We sure didn't luck out when it comes to scheduling this year. @Bama, @Oregon, @Florida, UGA, SC. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 11:39 AM) SportsCenter @SportsCenter 4m THIS JUST IN: NFL Pro Bowl will no longer have AFC vs. NFC format. Teams will be chosen with fantasy-like draft. (via @AdamSchefter) I wish they would just do away with the game completely... Just name a Pro Bowl team without the game.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 12:34 PM) We gotta stop pretending training camp means anything. It was a joke... I couldn't care less that Cutler opened the 1st 2 practices with INTs.
-
Just to recap: 1st play of 1st practice: Cutler interception 1st play of 2nd practice: Cutler interception 1st play of 3rd practice: Cutler incomplete pass #Progress

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) And it isn't even close. Our dline is extremely thin. Kyle, outside of Wooten, Shea, and Peppers, there is nothing all that grand about our ends either. Idonjie clearly had a place on this roster and would have been an excellent vet to have filling in and playing on pass rushing downs. For god sakes Kyle, you are listing guys like Irvin. Irvin is a giant nobody compared to Idonjie. Emery screwed the pooch on that. Thankfully, Wooten is starting to look like a player. I'm curious to see if he can stay healthy and also see how he can continue his development without Marinelli around (and if he will continue to take steps forward). Speaking of Wootton, this is from Jeff Dickerson earlier. Not that it means everything, but glad to hear that Wootton seemingly hit in hard this off-season:

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 09:14 PM) Idonije has been playing end the last few years, he is really undersized for a DT. And with McClellin, Wooten, Peppers, Washington, McBride fighting for two positions, he really got edged out. Last year Wooten basically took it from him. Inside it is gonna be Melton, Collins, Irvin, Minter, Paea all rotating, just a tough numbers game for Idonije. I understand that. And I know we kind of jerked him around between gaining and losing weight to play DT or DE. But I still think he provided good depth on the DL as a whole, and could have definitely spent valuable backup minutes at DT. Even undersized, he's clearly better than any DT on our roster not named Melton or Paea.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 04:33 PM) If you have guys that have performed and are worthy of an extension, f***ing extend them. Don't be a giant boob. Everyone always blasted Angelo, but as of this point, last years draft looks pretty lousy. We'll see...maybe Shea steps up. The only saving grace in that draft was Jeffrey and he still has a lot to prove (and anyone with half a brain would have taken him). I suppose I can give him credit for making some solid FA signings this year but letting Idonjie walk and now having turds making almost as much as him doesn't help (Israel was much better then Sed Ellis, who retired, and Anderson). This sums up my feelings exactly... The Idonije thing really bothers me. Where is our depth at DT?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) Just got my front windows tinted today to match the rest. I need to do that to my front windows. On that note, I love my 2010 Ford Explorer. All black exterior/interior. I've had it for 18 months and couldn't be happier. I have 2.5 years until it's paid off. Looking forward to that day. I hope to have it at least 5-6 more years so that once I pay it off, I can start saving up those monthly payments and then put down a lot of money for my next car.

Congrats Jason! That's really excellent news Also: I love your Dad's comment about wanting to watch The Open. Too funny.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 06:56 AM) Miss the f***ing late night crew man. Still posting late however, just not as frequently as the 18-23 year old me did. And yea Andrew still peaks in every blue moon I believe (wouldn't know my damn self cause I do the same). Had the pleasure of meeting and drinking with the aussie last year. He's brilliant. Me too man. Used to be a damn good time... I guess I still stay up pretty late (once a night owl, always a night owl) but I don't spend that time on SoxTalk. And good to hear about Andrew. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 08:53 AM) Those are more what I'd call IDEAL ages, not anything like typical or average ages. Average ages are more like 25-27 at AAA, and down from there to 22-23 at Low A. Also, age is important, but it is only as important as effective, or professional, age. Guy who was drafted at 22 but reaches AAA at 25 is on a good track, for example. Other side, guy drafted at 18 who is 25 in AAA, that is 7 years to get there, probably not a great sign. Have to keep development time in mind. Yeah, not exactly a huge slump. He wasn't going to keep hitting .300+ forever most likely, he's not seeing an adjustment to his level. Completely expected, would have been a surprise if he was hitting in A+ the entire rest of the season like he was in A. Yep, my bad. That's what I meant.

Thanks for posting this, OP. What a great trip down memory lane. Can't believe that happened 13 years ago. That 2000 team was so much fun (until the playoffs).

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 05:54 PM) Also a little help from you guys if anyone knows, What would be the appropriate ages for prospects in Low A, High A, AA, and AAA? Like top prospects that actually have a chance, what's considered old for the level and what's considered young? Thank you. It's kind of a generalization, but here's my best take on the typical ages at each level: Rookie - 18/19 Low A - 19/20 High A - 20/21/22 AA - 22/23 AAA - 23/24/25 Does that sound about right, guys? Obviously, a lot of it depends on what level they're joining the minors from - HS, JC, or a 4-year school. It's pretty common to see a 21 or 22 year old guy out of college get put in the advanced rookie league (Great Falls) or in Low-A ball at first. But the hope is they'll move up pretty quickly because they're certainly a bit old for those leagues. Also, injuries can skew things a bit.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 08:38 AM) Because I forgot about it and it's awesome Forgot about this too.

Bought a new TaylorMade 3 rescue wood (hybrid) and went to the range yesterday. Was consistently hitting he ball 200+ yards. Felt great. Can't wait to try it out during a real round.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) First, knowing J4L this is all going exactly to his plan. There's no frustration on his behalf in regards to the team, believe me. He masterfully threw out the bait and sat in the corner twiddling his thumbs awaiting the bites. However, as one of those 10yr veterans of Soxtalk this thread is an example of EXACTLY the time of atmosphere that existed in the "golden age" (definitely from 2003-2004). Reflecting back, I recall Old Roman, BMR, Cluer, Beastly (or WSC), JimH constantly instigating trouble and riling up everyone. There was no message board decor or rules, it was literally the equivalent of a youtube comments section. Also, consider that 10-11 years ago when this site began most of the active members were in the 16-25 age range. I'm sure this same age range is represented across all message boards. Most within this group were either in school or just finishing and had the available free time to regularly post. Now, consider a decade passing; these same people have careers and families draining their lives and free time. I was 18 when I joined here, and having just started college my time was devoted to not only following the White Sox and our minor league system, but those of other teams. Enough to where, when draft time came around I could have probably created my own Top 30 draft board. Now, I'm practically baseball retarded outside the White Sox. With my career and other obligations I'm lucky to post once a week. This issue isn't on the Soxtalk moderators, really. Through the years an unexpected incident would arise that would ban a few people, and as a result new rules would form. It's the natural progression of any site. It probably helped this place survive so long. I've always felt, the chat room is where the fun is. I remember numerous nights of past years where several of us would be up long after the end of a game. Unfortunately, I haven't been around to promote it and I don't believe others have had the motivation, either. Personally, I'm content with Soxtalk. I still check this board every day even if I don't post, and I'm sure other old-timers do the same. There's always a new influx of posters to replace those that have since stopped contributing. Without it, there'd just be Fathom and ss2k5 talking to themselves. But as always, f*** WSI. That sentiment hasn't changed over time. So it looks like I originally missed this thread because, not surprisingly, I don't check the PHT very often anymore. But, very well said, Flash. You nailed it. Oh, and I loved the bolded sentence. Too funny. 10 years ago I used to hang out on this site all the time. I was 15 and had not a care in the world. After school/sports practices, I'd come home and chill on SoxTalk for awhile. Hell, a select few of us would be up until 2-3am every night during the summers. Just can't do it anymore. I do read SLaM and the Sports forum on a daily basis, though. Just don't post often. Miss all of you guys. DBAH0 still around? Haven't seen much from him. -
I think Murphy will definitely make the roster, which leaves us with 11 players. That leaves room for 2 FA's. I'm guessing another big man and a SG/SF type. We seem plenty set at PG with Rose, Hinrich, and Teague. Rose/Hinrich/Teague Butler/Hinrich/FA Deng/Snell Boozer/Gibson/Murphy Noah/Nazr/FA

I think Snell could turn into what we had hoped Rip was going to be for us.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 04:34 PM) Not surprising. Guess Tennessee's late push wasn't strong enough. Yeah, not surprising at all. Louisville has been the team to beat for awhile. I didn't think he was going to commit this soon, however, so that was kind of surprising. -

Jaquan Lyle at Tennessee this weekend... I'll take it. -
So I get to see the Sox play in person twice this year (Friday night and today), and they lose both games. At least I saw us make history on Friday night when Sale became the 1st Sox pitcher in 100+ years to strike out 14+ and take the loss. But seriously, I don't even care that much b/c I got to spend Father's Day enjoying a Sox game with my Dad. And that's something I'll always appreciate and remember.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 15, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) Why is TN on that list? Because Cuonzo has been recruiting the heck out of this kid from Day 1. Plus, he has lots of Midwest ties since he's from Illinois and played at Purdue. Lyle won't go to UT, but I'm happy we could make the Final 4. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) cott Merkin @scottmerkin 20m CWS rotation vs. Houston: Friday: LHP Chris Sale; Saturday: LHP John Danks, Sunday: LHP Hector Santiago; Monday: LHP Jose Quintana Axelrod bumped in Houston Excellent. I'll be at the games on Friday and Sunday. Really excited to see Sale in person.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 06:58 PM) Well, our whole "multi-sport" star drafting philosophy is going to be tested the next couple of years... Definitely like him over Crawford, as he has a lot more overall speed and athleticism (of course, we said the same things about Mitchell in the past, or Walker). The "shoot for the stars" philosophy is 100X better than the McCulloch/Broadway approach....Ring, Poreda, etc. As they said, if need be, he can be converted to 2B or CF or any of the outfield positions, but he'll start out at SS. Becomes our #2 prospect on draft day...or, at worst, #3 behind Johnson/Hawkins. With the JC experience, he's at least 1 or 1 1/2 years closer to the majors than Crawford, TOO. Fits in a lot better with the idea of replacing Alexei 2 or 2 1/2 years from now. This. I'm all about it. I used to get so frustrated seeing our 1st round picks be projected as "#5 starter/Long Reliever". Baseball is such a crapshoot anyway - I'll gladly take kids with really high potential.
