Good points, Row and Balta. Thanks

I started taking Muscle Milk last week and have been mixing it with chocolate milk because it tastes better than when mixing it with water... Is that okay to do (even though the directions say "mix with water")?

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Jason, to your point, a trip to Europe with friends would be incredible. The problem with that is all of my best friends have already graduated (since I'm a 5th year) and are working. And the ones graduating with me have jobs lined up and start in June. So, I'd kind of be on my own. Well, somehow I finagled my way into a June 13 start date. The company has 3 new-hire start dates (May, June, August), and the June one was full, but I told the HR lady, who loves me, that I had really wanted to start in June and she said she'd try to squeeze me in there. And she did. So now I have just over a full month to enjoy some time off and then start work. I think it's the best of both worlds - I still get some decent time off before I start working, yet I'm not having to wait 3 months which seems like a long time. I may regret it down the road, but for now, I think I'm making the best decision. Plus, getting to Atlanta in the summer should be nice. I'm sure there will be plenty of going on and I'll definitely go to quite a few Braves games. It would have been awesome if the Sox were playing there this year (since they played in Chicago last year), but oh well...

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 5, 2011 -> 06:30 PM) Had my phone interview today...seemed to go pretty well. Hiring manager said he wants to sleep on it and then will talk to HR about flying me in for an in-person interview. May be headed off to the greener pastures of Portland... Portland would be awesome! I've only heard good things about it. I know a girl who lives there and she loves it.

Okay, looks like I got a lot of questions so I'll answer them all here: 1) I will not be staying on my parents insurance plan. I'll definitely have my own through my company. 2) I do have a lot of money saved up from working during college. 3) I don't have any life goals that I have to accomplish now. But, I would enjoy traveling abroad or something like that. 4) There are 7 new hires in my position. They aren't starting everyone at the same time. So some have to start in May and some in August. I was just given first dibs by the HR manager. I need to know by tomorrow, though. So I don't think that it would look poorly on me to pick August since they aren't on-boarding everyone at the same time anyway. I'm leaning towards a May start now...
-
Thanks everyone! As you can imagine, it's a tremendous weight off my shoulders. Now for one more question: Should I start on May 23 or August 8? Those are my options. I'm leaning towards August since that would give me a whole summer to do whatever I wanted. But, I'd also get 11 more weeks of pay if I start in May, and I'm really excited to start my job and I feel like I'll go crazy waiting 3 more months. Any suggestions? Btw, I graduate on May 13 so that would give me 10 days if I choose the May start date.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 4, 2011 -> 07:00 PM) Congratulations! Is this in Boeing? Actually, it's not. It's a company specializing in supply chain software: Manhattan Associates. I'll basically be managing accounts for current customers and working on teams to implement software to new customers. As awesome as Boeing would be, this job is exactly what I wanted. There's something about the software industry that really intrigues the heck out of me. It just seems cool. The culture of Manhattan is awesome. Everybody was great on my visit last week. Plus, it's in Atlanta. And while I wouldn't have minded going out to Seattle, with all things about equal as far as compensation, etc., I'd rather stay in the Southeast.

Just wanted to say I received an offer today from my #1 choice, and I'll be accepting it tomorrow. Thanks for all the help, everyone, that I've ever received in this thread.

Thank you, UConn. You have made this another good basketball season with Calipari failing to win a championship. But hey, at least Cal made his 1st Final 4.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) Stand up, act like it's a presentation. Some people say "smile" when you're talking, but I think that's a load of s***. Try not to pause to long, yet let them talk when they want to talk. I agree. I stood up for basically my entire last phone interview and thought it worked well. Though, I do think smiling helps convey a certain tone. If you say a sentence while smiling and then try saying it while forcing yourself not to smile, you can hear a difference. But that's just me.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Mar 30, 2011 -> 11:22 PM) I wouldn't say railroaded into irrelevance, that's a bit much, but whatever. Also, you can't just discredit 05, as much as you'd like to. I hate that whole argument. Recruiting took a dip, which was the biggest problem, but now it's been corrected. Again, unless we have someone named Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart coming here (LOL), I'll keep em. This also isn't a "top" program, so not sure who you're looking to hire - or if you want Guenther making it. Bruce Pearl is available... -

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 06:37 AM) Any luck with the company that we spoke about last semester? We could always use another Sox fan! Unfortunately, no. They've already filled all of their supply chain positions... It's looking like Atlanta is a pretty likely destination for me.

QUOTE (CubsSuck1 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) I've worked for Boeing; very good company in the grand scheme of things. In addition to what others have been saying, I will point out a few items. On the job requisition, there should be a section that outlines the skills and competencies they are looking for in potential hires for the given position. This may seem like common sense, but if you are able to describe, in detail, exactly how you fulfill/exceed those competencies, you will have a leg up. I'm not really sure how much you'll get probed about your technical knowledge, that kind of depends on the job and the interviewer. Obviously, you should know your stuff, but a lot of times, the assumption is that if you've graduated from a reputable program, its an entry level position, you had a good GPA, etc, then you will most likely have sufficient technical know-how. But you will absolutely get behavior-based interview questions. In fact, the interview could essentially be composed of nothing but behavior based questions. So, with that being the case, I would have 5-10 good experiences that you are proficient in describing, and being able to tailor those stories to multiple different types of questions. Do your best to "click" with the interviewer - that is another huge component of the interview that could be a deciding factor in the hiring decision. To my knowledge, most of the hiring in the company right now is for positions in Seattle and South Carolina. St. Louis has been up and down, as you can probably imagine, with the type of work they are doing out there. It sounds like you have good internship experience, so be sure to sell that as much as you can. Good Luck! Thanks for the detailed response, especially since I know you're not posting much these days (but good to see you still active). That was really helpful. I definitely already have at least 6-7 really good experiences from GE that I can talk thoroughly about that I kind of tailor to different questions, so I should be pretty prepared in that aspect.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 09:30 PM) The UT job is terrible. I'd probably put it 6th out of 6 open right now. Though now it's closed. And Shaka does not need to go anywhere. He'll have a major job next year too. There's a big difference when you make the Final 4. I'm hoping you think this b/c you're assuming the NCAA is going to nail us hard with sanctions. Because if not, I'd like to hear your reasoning... Here's some facts about UT basketball: 1) Facilities are brand-new and on par with the best out there. 2) Even with losing 5 seniors and possibly Hopson & Harris, the roster still has talent. We'll have four former 4-star recruits (2 juniors, 2 sophomores) and two incoming 4-star recruits for next year. I can live with that. Plus, if Tobias Harris isn't drafted in the lottery, they say he'll come back so that would be keeping our best player and one of the Top 10 players from this year's freshman class. I think any coach would be happy working with that kind of talent. 3) We can pay better than most programs, so if a coach does well, he's going to get locked up for many years and a lot of money. The UT athletic department was one of 14 to make a profit last year, and is constantly spending money on our biggest programs - football and basketball. 4) Large, newly remodeled stadium with a great atmosphere that makes it difficult for opponents. As long as we're winning, filling up our arena with 21,000+ fans makes it quite intimidating for opposing teams. That's why we haven't lost at home much in the last 6 seasons under Pearl. Actually, even with the pending NCAA investigation, I'm going to say it's at worst 3rd of the available jobs - behind GT and NC ST. So again, I'm curious to what you're reasoning is. -

Cuonzo Martin to Tennessee... Another Gene Keady disciple at a big time program. Let's hope he turns out more like Keady than the rest of that coaching tree. I'm okay with this. It's always the kind of hire I expected to make. I had heard really good things about him earlier this season before I knew we'd be in need of a coach and was impressed. We'll see how he does at a big-time program, though. -
It's tough seeing the biggest scumbag in sports get to another Final 4. UConn better take care of business. I wonder if Kentucky knows where it's going to store Cal's 3rd vacated Final 4 banner...

QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) Is it too early to apply for jobs now if I graduate in may? Will companies even read past that part on my resume or cover letter? I'm not getting as much interest as I thought i'd get... Not trying to sound cocky. Absolutely not. I've been applying for jobs since February and have gotten quite a few interviews over the last 2-3 weeks because of it.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) That's who we do business with the most (STL). Of course, we're dealing with procurement mostly (buyers)... so what you are doing will dovetail in a little with what we deal with. Actually, I could probably ask our buyer for some insight into the process. She's pretty cool to work with. The biggest part of the interview - you'll get the standard "tell me when..." BS type of questions (difficulties and how you overcame them, etc.) and you'll get the systems questions... but for supply chain, if you can give them some concrete examples of anything you've done of routings and saving money in a supply chain, or any ideas about how you negotiate, that's extremely important for supply chain and materials management. So, in your experiences, relate it to those types of things - even if you've got little "real world" experiences, negotiation and dealing with people and how you can relate it to how you can be super organized will be the key. (Forgive me, I can't remember - I think you're just coming out of school, right? I'd answer this a bit differently if not.) Okay, so let me preface this by saying I made a mistake about which job I'm interviewing for. I applied for two (the one I mentioned above and a Procurement Agent). Well, when they called and mentioned the "Supply Chain job" I applied for, I assumed that they meant the "Supply Chain Analyst" position I referenced above. Turns out it is actually for the Procurement Agent position, but it's in Seattle not St. Louis. Not sure how much that changes your answer b/c it sounds like you'd be better off discussing their procurement jobs but it's not in STL (where you most business). Also, I am just coming out school (graduate in May), but I took off a whole semester last Spring and did a full-time Co-op with General Electric. They kept me on full-time through the summer and part-time last Fall, so I have about a year of real world experience. Thanks again, Kap. And sorry for the confusion on the first job I mentioned.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 09:10 AM) Yeah. I thought you were trying to say that you've been able to avoid trendy social networking sites like Facebook, but then had Twitter #1. Just thought it was kind of funny. Yeah, I guess I should have worded that differently. It's not like I'm trying to avoid trendy social networking sites. I love Facebook. I think it's very useful for a lot of reasons, but I'm just glad I'm not so caught up in it like I used to be.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 12:11 AM) Lol, yet you have Twitter #1. I don't get it. Are you saying that because Twitter is a "social networking" site? 95% of the time I use it to get news. It's like a one-stop shop for everything I'm interested in. I follow a few Tennessee beat writers, ESPNChicago, some football/basketball/baseball journalists, supply chain management news, and other things like that. Makes it easier than going to individual sites directly.

1. Twitter 2. Soxtalk 3. Chicago Tribune - Sports 4. Gmail 5. Volquest.com (UT Rivals site) 6. GoVolsXtra.com 7. YouTube 8. Steepandcheap.com I'm proud to say Facebook is not on this list. My first couple years of college it would have, but I probably check it twice/week now. Honestly, the only time I get on Facebook is when I check my email and it says someone tagged me in a photo or wrote on my wall.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 10:03 PM) One of my best friends got a job with boeing right out of college last summer. It's a great company with GREAT pay to start. If you want me to ask him about the interview process I can do that as well. If you don't mind, that would be great. Anything he might have to say would be appreciated.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) Fot what position? And where? As much detail as you can give me would help, because I/we work with Boeing daily - not corp, but elsewhere... Position: Supply Chain Management Analyst Location: St. Louis, MO Not sure if this will help, but this is what I got from their job site. Thanks, Kap.
