QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 06:52 PM) Your comment about Jay Bilas just screams that Pearl is a victim of the media. He's really not. He should have been fired, and I dunno any reasonable person who disagrees. Programs have been given the death penalty for lying to the NCAA. So far he's gotten what, 7 games from the SEC? If the NCAA comes down hard on him, and Tennessee basically did nothing but reduce his salary by like 10% and take away some phone calls, that just means they've enabled him. They should have taken a stand and said "we don't deal with liars and cheats." But of course they didn't, and that speaks of the administration down there (See also the football program). I just like that someone actually stuck up for the guy for once. The cool thing to do seems to bash the heck out of him every time we're on TV, etc. No one ever points out the good things Pearl does for both the community and the university. Pearl does so many charitable things, but everyone wants to focus on this one, bad mistake he made. Of course, that's how the media is these days. The bad stuff sells. I'm not sure I'd call him a "victim" b/c when you mess up these days, you should expect it. But many in the media seem to care too much about this situation. This was an issue when it came out 6 months ago. The university is not firing him and that's that. Move on. Anyway, as far as penalties: 1) 7 games from SEC? - It's actually 8 (and you can expect more from the NCAA) 2) Reduce his salary by 10% - It was actually reduced by 50% for 3 years. That's pretty significant. 3) Take away some phone calls - Um, he can't leave campus to recruit for a year. He can't make any phone calls, travel to any games, make in-home visits, etc. That's all pretty harsh considering those are the self-imposed penalties (#2 & 3) and the SEC penalty (#1) so far. You can be sure the NCAA will come down the hardest, so I'd say when it's all said and done, he'll be very heavily penalized. -

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 06:27 PM) I know I'm off my rocker, but the caps were a version of green text (sarcasm). I was poking fun at dasox a little. I found it funny. "Ah yall, we're so backwoods down here in the holler that we don't follow rules. Heck, we marry our cousins" -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) Cheating and breaking the rules is the norm at Tennessee right? You're off your rocker if you think Pearl somehow is getting it worse than he deserves. He WILLFULLY broke rules. He LIED to the governing body of his chosen career path. When did I say he's getting it worse than he deserves? No really, tell me when I said that. I said he shouldn't be fired like some people have suggested. I agree that he has to serve his penalty. He broke the rules. I've never denied that. But I will never say it was something he should be fired for. Edit: I'm assuming here that even though you quoted nightni, you must have known his post was sarcastic, and therefore, are directing that 2nd comment at me. -

Damn, that was a complete blowout by Tennessee. f*** all the Tennessee haters (including that writer who didn't even have us in his AP Top 25 poll this week). We just went into Pitt (which has lost 1 non-conference home game in like the last 8 years or something ridiculous like that) and completely dominated from start to finish. The final score (7 point lead) was the closest Pitt got in the entire 2nd half. UT has now beaten the top 2 Big East teams in Pitt and Villanova, and we've done it handily. -

Jay Bilas just reinforced why he has become one of my favorite basketball analysts (and I used to dislike him years ago). Only member of the national media who has given any sort of backing for Bruce Pearl. Thanks, Jay. Maybe everyone else will realize he didn't f***ing kill someone. Firing is not in order for lying but then coming back and admitting to it before it got out of hand. -

Tennessee is sure making me happy today. Up 14 over #3 Pitt at Pitt, but there's still plenty of time so I won't feel too comfortable yet. -

Not really sure where to put this, but... Tennessee is the only school to be top-5 nationally in attendance in football and men's/women's hoops in same year... and we've done it 7 times. -
QUOTE (3E8 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) Each year me and my friends do Beersmas. Everyone brings 12 GOOD beers to the event early in the morning. Then we draw an order and you pick a person ideally based on how much they know about and have access to good beers (but you don't know exactly what they brought). After that's done, you exchange your beer to the person that picked you and vice versa, and spend the rest of the day drinking. That's a fantastic idea. Very cool.

Damn, I may have made a mistake tonight. This girl wanted my dick real bad, but I turned her down to hang out with my boys who are graduating tomorrow. Now I'm kind of regretting my decision, but at the same time, I guess it's a good thing that I put my friends in front of a girl... with any luck, she'll still be wanting it 5 weeks from now when we start back to school.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 08:11 PM) Any score is possible in the NFL. The key for me is whether the Titans have quit on Jeff Fisher or not. If they have, it will be a ugly. The consensus here in Tennessee seems to be that they have quit on Fisher, but we will see... I, for one, think he's a really good coach.

Tennessee commit Justin Worley (QB) was named Gatorade National Player of the Year. He may only be a 3-star (scouts worry about his arm-strength), but I'll take it. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 05:32 PM) I love that beer. Seriously. I'm with you, Row. I tried it this summer and liked it. I think there has to be the right time and place for it, but on a really hot summer day in the mid-afternoon, it can hit the spot.

This is good and bad. If Florida hires Dan Mullen (like they should), then I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make at Florida. But at least Meyer is gone and I, for now, can have some sort of hope that Florida will hire a Ron Zook-like coach again, haha. Regardless, always good to get a 2-time National Championship coach out of the conference. Oh, and I can't imagine he'll come back like last year. I feel like if he was going to make a decision this time, he'll stick by it (so as to not pull a Brett Favre). Now if only some NFL team will throw a ton of money at Saban and get him out of here so he can prove he's not a flop at the sport's highest level (Saban has a big enough ego that it wouldn't surprise me to see him give the NFL another shot to prove he can do it). EDIT: I'm sure Bob Stoops is #1 on Florida's list, but please God, don't let him take that job. -
Well, once I finish this paper, I'll be officially on Christmas Break. Now if only I hadn't started so damn late. 6:20am and I'm halfway done.
-
Oh good, so I'm not the only one procrastinating? It's 3am and I still haven't started a paper that's due tomorrow. I'm an idiot...

Regardless of Randy Shannon's ability as a coach, no one has ever questioned the kind of person he is (and this shows why). Really nice gesture to hand-write notes to each of his players. http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_colle...tten-notes.html -
QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 10:23 PM) The Gaylord Opryland hotel is probably the most awesome hotel I have stayed at ever. It was worth the trip to Nashville alone. And we ate at the Loveless Cafe twice. Would have really loved to go to the Smokey Mountains but we just didn't have enough time. Very cool city . Strange that the Parthenon is located in a city such as Nashville though. Lol I know, right? It is kind of funny to see it there in the middle of an urban area. Glad you enjoyed Nashville. It's definitely a place I'd like to end up someday.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 10:18 AM) Hey folks, Was thinking of organizing a get together for the Soxtalk crew. Keith (lostfan) will be in town in early January so I thought maybe we can get some of the locals together for some drinks. It would be nice to meet some of you clowns and talk sports in person. Anyone else interested in making this work? We'd need to pick a bar. Something centrally located. No cover and preferably one that has cheap drinks and lots of TVs for sports. The dates that work best are 01/05 through 01/07. Heads, you'll need to keep your penis in your pants. I get the feeling this is going to be a nice, long-running joke on this board. On that note, I will not be making it up north for this shindig so I have nothing else to contribute to this thread.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:22 PM) The White Sox. I think that would be correct since the only opening-day no-hitter happened against the Sox. And an opening-day no-hitter would have to be about the only way this is possible, right?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 08:50 AM) Bah, everyone knew that Seattle's team was leaving that year, they'd already been sold to an OKC owner. If you knew the Sox were moving to Tampa next season, would you continue to buy tickets to help that owner pay for his new city's team? Seattle doesn't "Deserve" a team if you say that the only cities that deserve a team are cities that spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on arenas during recessions. That's a solid market, one of the top 15 in the country. The NBA needs to be there, just like the NFL needs to be in L.A. Well said. I think Seattle got screwed in that situation, and they'd do well with another team. That's surprisingly a really good basketball town too. Seattle produces a ton of talent.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:21 AM) I went laser tagging last night, best time ever! I haven't been in probably 10 years. I used to love it... That's really a great idea. I think I may try to see if some of my buddies want to do that.

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) dasox24, I am hearing Michigan vs Tennessee in the Gator Bowl. What are you hearing? That's what I've been hearing too for the last 24 hours or so. It was all Music City until about a day ago. But, now in the last hour or so, I'm hearing the Music City is a very strong possibility again. Guess we'll find out in about 20 minutes. For selfish reasons, I want the Music City Bowl since it's close to me and I'd be able to go. If we play in Jacksonville, I won't be making it. -
