Knee jerk reaction I voted 9-8, but given the pitching concerns that might be a little optimistic.

He's still on pace for a 4 fWAR season even in a down year and his Statcast numbers are all encouraging. MAYBE he signs a 1 year deal because of all the uncertainty with how teams will spend money this off-season, but at 30 he can't afford to take a middling two or three year deal. He is an excellent all-around ball player, this isn't going to be a Castellanos or Ozuna situation.

White Sox v Royals - Cease vs Duffy - 9/3/20 GT
TomPickle replied to ShoeLessRob's topic in 2020 Season in Review
.278 / .375 / .444 against LHP this year, him batting third against RHP is what doesn't make sense. -
Reynaldo Lopez Optioned to Schaumburg

Sorry, but that is Cease's role now. -
Sox vs Twins 9/2/2020 Lopez vs Berrios 7:10 CST

Obviously Madrigal screwed up, but Abreu has to go out and stretch to get that throw. Might have made enough of a difference to be an out. He's improved defensively this year, but is still really bad around the bag. -

Detwiler only throwing to one batter last night will make a lot more sense when he has to come in after the second inning tonight and throw 3 innings. -
White Sox are 22-9 on days where they play one baseball game.

I have no idea why, but I thought that had a chance off the bat. -

Way to drop a big stinking turd out there tonight. Give the Twins' grounds crew all they can handle. -
I threw in the towel before a single plate appearance, so after 72 terrible ones I am even more ready to dump him.

Dane Dunning - Expectations now and going forward
TomPickle replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Among qualified starters Cease has the worst FIP and second worst xFIP in baseball, worst fWAR, and tied for worst BB/9. He has been pretty bad, but to his credit he is somehow keeping teams from torching him like they should be. -
Rodon an option in the "not to distant future"
TomPickle replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Rodon to the IL in the slightly more distant future. -
Not Steve said a trade was done. The White Sox have already traded for Jarrod Dyson. NOT STEVE WAS RIGHT AGAIN. HE DOESN'T MISS!!!!!!!!
-
DON'T YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON ME
-
OR We could NOT trade a guy that is going to get sick and infect multiple members of the team and collapse and miss the playoffs, but if we DID trade him then the White Sox would have gone on to win the World Series.
-
I would kill for a world where this is true. The Sox currently have 3 league average or better starters. I guess 4 if they are done jerking around Dunning.
-
My problem with the White Sox not making moves at the deadline is that I trust them to improve through trades much more than through free agent signings. I don't have a problem with making no trades today in a vacuum, but they have to try to further improve in free agency.
-
Yeah, after seeing your later posts I think we're closer to agreeing on things than I originally thought. 2020 sucks for a lot of reasons, but under normal circumstances this would have been a nice low pressure season to maybe make the playoffs and learn more about a lot of your minor leaguers. It will be fun to watch the White Sox make the playoffs at least.

I understand the mentality of not being overly concerned or invested in this year's final results, but how you could be willing to write off next year is beyond me. The White Sox window *could* extend years down the line, but I have trouble having faith beyond Giolito's arb years. I wish I had your level of belief that three of Kopech, Cease, Dunning, Lopez?, Crochet?, and Steiver? will be good starting pitchers by 2022 AND that Giolito and Keuchel will stay healthy and not regress.
-
Okay, but what if instead of one Lucas Giolito the White Sox had two?
-
I think you absolutely have to do that if it's on the table. The White Sox just have to be serious about getting a real RF in the off-season if they do that since I would guess that Encarnacion isn't getting his option picked up so you'll have two holes to fill in the lineup. They could mix and match at DH (especially if they do somehow keep McCann around) easy enough with internal options, but Mazara needs to go.

The Brewers have the third lowest position player fWAR in baseball this year. They have a stars and scrubs thing going on that's not too dissimilar from what the White Sox were doing before they started the rebuild in 2016. The Brewers have just happened to be more successful than the White Sox ever were doing that. They probably are looking for more of a retool than a rebuild like the Sox had to do. I don't really know what the Sox have to offer on the position player side other than Vaughn and I would be pretty bummed to see him be traded even for someone as good as Woodruff.
