Sox acquire Nomar Mazara for Steele Walker
TomPickle replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't strongly disagree. Balta was literally asking for mid-level rotation pieces that could be dealt for Vaughn. Those seemed like the best fits to me. Musgrove, Thor, Fried, and a few others don't line up as well because of the first base situations on those teams. -

Haniger was still on roughly a 3 WAR pace before his appearance on "Ow, My Balls!" Gonzales is a #3 starter. You'd be getting 5 years of those guys for 6 years of Vaughn. I don't think that's a crazy trade. -

Mike Clevinger, Luis Castillo, Kyle Hendricks, Marco Gonzales Those are all dubious fits though except maybe Marco Gonzales, who would be a little light IMO for Vaughn. Gonzales and Haniger for Vaughn++ works for me. -

White Sox system will be bottom five when Robert, Madrigal and Kopech graduate this year. -

I will say Mazara's similar batters have some interesting names on there Similar Batters through 24 Jeff Burroughs (973.9) Jeff Francoeur (968.3) Harold Baines (963.0) * Max West (954.8) Dwight Evans (951.3) Jay Bruce (946.9) Sixto Lezcano (946.8) Corey Patterson (942.5) Joe Pepitone (939.5) Andre Dawson (939.2) * * - Signifies Hall of Famer -

WAR is a counting stat. He was worse in his time played having that 1.1 WAR season than when he had his 0.6 WAR season. He also had a 2.8 fWAR season the year before his 0.6 WAR season, something Mazara has never come close to doing. The two players are not similar in career trajectory at all. -

He went from 65 games played with a 125 wRC+ to 148 games played with a 101 wRC+. What a terrible example lol. -

I think we all know exactly what it's going to take for the White Sox to get a new front office and it's the same thing that it's going to take to get new ownership. -

Sox acquire Nomar Mazara for Steele Walker

Seems like we have two camps on this trade. People who are excited that the White Sox won't have the worst RF situation in baseball next year and people who upset that the White Sox are not trying to get meaningfully better. -

The problem that I have with this move is that right now it signals to me that the front office is still not thinking that 2020 is part of their contention window. On top of that, there is no evidence of the White Sox bringing in flawed players like Mazara and taking advantage of their skills and hiding their flaws. Is there any reason to think that Mazara is going to get 30 starts at DH or not get 30 starts against lefties? Mazara is a step closer to going .500 from Cordell and Tilson, obviously, but I don't want the goal to be going .500 in 2020. -

Then this trade is even worse because you could have gotten Eric Thames for like $5 million and no prospect and he's a much better hitter against RHP. -
The price is giving Nomar Mazara 450 PA and 900 innings in RF. It's very unlikely he's going to bust, but just as unlikely he's going to be better than a meh player. He's an improvement over the AAAA filler that's been thrown out in RF recently, but he is just lefty Avi.

People are acting like the White Sox should be beyond the "hoping a guy turns it around" phase and should be acquiring proven good players to help them get over the hump.

2014: 104 wRC+ vs R 2017: 97 wRC+ vs R 2018: 104 wRC+ vs R 2019: 110 wRC+ vs R He's not really even an attractive strong side platoon option and he's unplayable against lefties.

You think these guys need to buy flood insurance for all the water they carry for the front office?
-
I don't think highly of Walker as a prospect and I would still hate this trade. Hard pass on lefty Avi.

Isn't that what he turned down from the Nationals? Seems like a good starting place to me.

If the Red Sox were willing to send Price and Benitendi to the White Sox for little return then that trade already would have happened.
