    Full disclosure: I happen to be a Tony fan. Not too many mangers with more than two WS wins in the last 25 years. I believe only Joe Torre. And all time I'll bet less than ten guys have won three.

    Pretty close, you just missed Sparky if you count the last one as within 25 years. 15 guys have won 2. 44 guys have won 1.

    # First Last Manager

    7 1932 1943 Joe McCarthy

    7 1949 1958 Casey Stengel

    5 1910 1930 Connie Mack

    4 1955 1965 Walter Alston

    4 1996 2000 Joe Torre

  2. Rotoworld:

    Oneli Perez-R- White Sox Oct. 19 - 2:39 pm et

    Oneli Perez was perfect for 1 1/3 innings to earn a save in his debut for Licey of the DWL.

    Perez had a 2.10 ERA and 16 saves in 77 innings in Double-A this year. The White Sox, though, never gave him an opportunity, possibly because of how much Dewon Day struggled when he was promoted to the majors from Birmingham. With better command than Day, he appears to have a future as a setup man. However, he is likely to have problems with the home run ball.

    I wonder what the worst stolen base percentage is for anyone over 10 attempts. probably 0 for whatever.

    In the history of Major League Baseball, since 1871, Uribe's dubious achievement has been exceeded by only 3 players with over 10 attempts. Zeb Terry of the 1921 Vermin went 1 for 13, Jose Vizcaino of the 1994 Mets and Eddie Yost of the 1957 Senators went 1 for 13.

    Our Juan was matched by Bobby Doerr, 1 for 10 with the 1939 Red Sox. By the way, Bobby Doerr is in the Hall of Fame.

    Thats it, out of 7,768 players who attempted 10 or more steals in years entering the 2007 season.

    The record for most caught steals with no success is Pete Runnels of the 1952 Senators, 0 for 10.

    The Sox had six players man third base in 2007, their most at that position in a decade. The last time that number was higher was in 1997.

    Here's the breakdowns:

    2007: Joe Crede, Josh Fields, Pablo Ozuna, Andy Gonzalez, Rob Mackowiak, Alex Cintron

    1997: Paco Martin, Greg Norton, Tony Pena, Tony Phillips, Chris Snopek Mario Valdez, Robin Ventura.

    The Sox also had six players man third base in 2000: Joe Crede, Tony Graffanino, Paul Koenerko, Greg Norton, Herbert Perry, Craig Wilson

    Love your stuff. The record is nine, 1972 and 1932. Oh my God, Jorge Orta at 3B? He made 3 errors in his 9 games. End of experiment, and that was a Chuck Tanner club...that was the year Melton was hurt.

    yearID G Player

    1972 74 Ed Spiezio

    1972 56 Bill Melton

    1972 14 Rich Morales

    1972 09 Jorge Orta

    1972 06 Hank Allen

    1972 03 Hugh Yancy

    1972 02 Luis Alvarado

  5. This thread brings up a lot of old, bitter memories for me. Remember the flamming I took when I whinned about KW breaking up the team?

    The Evil Kenny Williams thread

    I was so upset over all the moves I started to not enjoy the game, this coming off a WS trophy. By the end of spring training I decided to put it aside, shut up and just watch the guys we had. In hindsight I can't say the White Sox would be better had the deals not been done. We certainly miss Rowand but then again Thome has been a great treat to watch for these two seasons. Crede's back would have went out even if El Duke were still on the team. But the team has never played the same.

    The '05 group competed hard and made every effort to make every play on both sides of the ball every inning of the game, they were a joy to watch. You never knew what play in a game would turn out to be the key, it often turned out that saving a single run in the third made all the difference in the ninth.

    While some of the new pieces have nice numbers, the team has never recovered that gamesmanship and competitive edge. When I watch the young NL teams in the playoffs this year challenging every runner going from first to third, sliding hard on every 6-4 thats in range, it makes me remember how the '05 team played. Nobody had to be the hero, and thats what made heroes of them all.

    And Rex is right about Javy, he is still a dog.

  6. I'm dropping my Ozzie plan because I am incapable of planning my life up to 6 months in advance. I ended up eating or giving away tickets due to a fishing trip, the death of an acquaintance and a wedding. I'll go to just as many games but will select targets of opportunity game by game. I expect availability to be easier and think I will end up with better seats this way.

  7. QUOTE(StatManDu @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 11:02 AM)
    In 2006, Andy Gonzalez was the first Sox player to appear at at least seven positions in 17 seasons. Gonzalez played first, second, shortstop, third, left, center and right for the 2006 Sox (and I thought he was totally worthless!!!). Steve Lyons played every position but catcher in 1990. The year prior, Lyons appeared at every position but pitcher.

    So now you know!

    psst...its 2007

  8. QUOTE(Markbilliards @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 10:35 PM)
    probably at least half the white sox have used steroids at some point in their baseball careers. Especially Razor Shines who you can see the effects of him getting off them.

    I hope you are joking. Razor hasn't played ML Baseball for 20 years. He is a 50 year old veteren coach who went on a diet and excersise program because he had gotten way overweight. Jeezz...

  13. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 15, 2007 -> 01:28 AM)
    4 more seasons?

    But aren't young players meant to improve and older players decrease in worth as they get older?

    That's like comparing Josh Fields and I don't know some 33 year old third baseman who has a better batting average? Will Fields still be a subpar player for another 4 seasons compared to this guy?

    Fields played a fine game last night, both at the bat and in left. I was very impressed with his throw to nail Vlad, another time he ran down a liner I'm sure Pods would not have reached. He was into the game at the plate, he actually got a bunt down. I think he looks much better in LF than he did at 3B.

    Richar missed at least 3 plays. Two balls he didn't get to and one he didn't charge, almost getting Contreras run over. His bat may improve but the kid has not shown me he can play 2B in the majors.

    Owens didn't cover as much ground as I've seen him in the past and showed me his weak arm isn't getting better. A player with his limited offense had better get a lot better in the field to stick with a big club.

    Gonzalez made one good play and no mistakes on his other ones. Although he got a hit against Colon, Bootcheck made him look like a rookie league batter.

    Among the kids, Fields is the only long term major leaguer in my eyes.

  14. If nothing else, the thought of Ozzie sticking it to Mariotti for 5 more years may have justified the extension all by itself. Reinsdorf himself called Mariotti a Pissant, and Ozzie called him a f***** so I doubt his 'scathing' column upset anyone at 35th and Shields.

    Umpires: HP: Paul Nauert. 1B: Rob Drake. 2B: Gerry Davis. 3B: Brian Gorman.

    The game time has been pushed back to about 7:20 due to the drizzle.

  17. Cleveland's win over the Angels last night mathematically eliminated the White Sox in the AL Central. They join Tampa Bay and Baltimore as eliminated AL teams. No teams in the NL have been eliminated. The team has 20 games remaining and is 20 games under .500. Elimination number for the wild card is now 2 (Yankees).

    The obits have been written for the 2007 team for some time. In the end, they fell short in every phase of the game; pitching, hitting, defense, baserunning and throwing. They couldn't even bunt. They truly lost as a team. They need some new players and some old ones to play better. That said, a team with a quality starting rotation, a proven 3-4-5 batting order and a star closer can be turned around in a hurry.

    Worst to first!
